  1. "an empty bag of mj" is really misleading and plays to one side only was it a bag "with mj remnants"? or a bag that "had an odor of/evidence of" mj? then that's one thing Else it's just an empty bag of empty saying "empty bag of mj" just leads to ridicule and nonsense - they need to be specific ... 2. * I understand you need to keep your feet pointed to keep the flaps tight? (the only solo jump I've done to date with them on they were flapping like anything and I this I wasn't probably doing this...) you need to keep them taut, but it shouldn't require too much thought - point your toes extend your legs * do you need to slightly angle your feet so the wind hits more-so one of the sides? not really, angle in or out is used to actively activate the 'sail' of the bootie for either direction - neutral is a ready position with slight leg extension to keep air on the surface If you're just flying in the stable position for example would you be having your legs/feet in different position? I'm assuming you would need slightly less leg extension, but I guess I'm more talking about the angle of your legs/feet here actually, it could be slightly MORE extension - counter the forward thrust by staying narrow and sitting up higher with the upper torso * when turning with legs is it the same as without booties? or is there a subtle difference in how you'd turn with booties as opposed to without them? (hopefully not a dumb question) I don't know how you turn now, so can't comment - you can make really good center point turns with just arms, or just legs, or using both - a good mantis camp is a good way to learn this and more. But, for leg turns, you can generate a LOT more power with good fitting booties - that's a LOT more surface area to work with - learn to use it * any tips on what to try to achieve in some training solo jumps with them prior to doing 4-ways with them on? Perhaps just (a) stable position and (b) turns is enough... lots of drills, if you can't afford a tunnel camp for mantis training, it's wouldn't hurt to pull up the curriculum - forward and back, side sliding, hopping, in addition to neutral (passive and active power - holding ground) and turns, all are powered better with booties - so you can practice everything ... 3. An Airspeed curriculum mantis camp at the tunnel is just the thing. Highly recommend it. this link we put down some advice for first time suit buyers - (or long time users that don't really understand them....) http://www.skimmersuits.com/Things-to-Know.html Checking the Fit of Your Booties If you have purchased an RW suit with booties here is how to check the fit of the booties. Put the suit on with the shoes you wear while skydiving. You should be able to put your suit on while wearing your shoes, pulling the bootie over the toe of your shoes after you have the suit on may tear the foot cup. Make sure your foot is all the way forward into the foot cup. Your booties will look loose while standing straight up, as will the torso (remember you will use this while arching, not while standing and looking down). Putting on a rig will help ensure the booties fit correctly. Lay down on the floor and arch, the booties should tighten from knee to toe as you bend your leg toward 90degrees - point your toes to pull the bootie taut. If you can’t point your toes or your toes are being pulled down the booties are too tight. If your feet completely straighten out, then they are too long. The goal is with a good arch, and knees bent to not quite a right angle, you can point your toes to just past a right angle and the booties snap taut. Flying Your Booties If the fit is right and you are having troubles with them in freefall you may need to adjust your body position and put some downward pressure in the toes, you should try to feel a lot more pressure from the new booties than you are used to without booties. If you don’t press on the air, then your booties might flap or feel loose, they need to catch the air smoothly (like a boat sail) and stay pressurized, keep them in the wind and resist bending your knees and “hiding” them from the air above your thighs. Avoid “bouncing” them in and out of the air stream (happy feet), press on the air (straighten the knees slightly more) and hold them in the wind. It’ll take more than one jump to get the hang of the booties if you haven’t jumped with booties before. Fly the booties don’t let them fly you! ... 4. sound like you need to take in the legs about an inch or slightly more - if you are pointing your toes to max just to get a bit of feeling from the bootie, then you aren't really creating good habits Until you decide to get a new suit, or a bootie rebuild, the easiest way to pull the stretch in, is to simply put a dart in between the instep portion and the shin of the bootie (pretty much front of the ankle joint). You'll definitely need nylon rigger's thread (military grade nylon thread). The dart will get a lot of pressure so you need that STRONG thread. A dart is pretty much just a single fold that's sewn shut - so remember, a one inch fold will remove 2 inches of stretch (1" down, 1" back). I'd try to do a small dart at first and then have someone that knows 4-way check your bootie fit. It's easy to put in and easy to take out. ... 5. You are right and I stand corrected. It's just so rare that we get to hammer Brian it's hard to resist the opportunity. 6. The angle of exit from a plane with a fixed airspeed will look the same every single time for an observer point of view located on that same plane. the jumpers and the observer are in the same airmass and the plane is penetrating that airmass in same way regardless of the winds that day......so the relative motion of jumpers and plane is the same no matter the conditions This is regardless of the winds or combination of the winds that day. That's why observation of the jumpers from the door doesn't give usable information for separation (other than provide a random delay just from the action - still better than nothing) for those wanting to be able to eyeball it from the plane, a better method is to check out the progress the plane is making across the ground, not looking at jumpers that are in the same moving airmass as the plane itself - more accurate inferences can be made from reading the relative ground reference however, there is still no substitute to just figuring it out directly Edit: you guys are a bit rough on Brian. He's given so much to the sport, I'd think communicating good info to him is a lot more productive that just hammering statements about "credibility" etc I see in a couple posts. Of course, I think that's also a better approach for anyone - great mentors and teachers, or brand new jumpers. I think this is just a great example of how we all have info to learn, no matter how knowledgable, and when I miss on something, I hope that corrections and feedback are respectful and not abusive so I can take it a positive fashion and pass it on. ... 8. If you're that well-informed about transplant surgery, then you know that the organ goes to the best match, not the most important patient. Not exactly. The likelihood of success is also taken into account. For example, transplants are not given to good matches if they have other serious health problems. So while age is not in itself disqualifying, it is taken into account. I heard that another criteria is income - not for paying off to get the transplant, but consideration is given for being able to afford to pay for the anti-rejection meds, etc for the rest of your life - don't know if it's true. I suspect there is a large criteria of weighted factors and that they all have reasonable backings, and I suspect there are some that, when taken out of context, someone here can spin for their own agendas.. ... 9. This is a great list. I think the first concern is the ONLY real concern. And all the rest are made up to push various agendas and will make resolving that first real one "A young man is dead and nobody knows why" a lot harder (or impossible) to resolve in a legal and fair fashion. A clear and legal resolution is what that young man, zimmerman, and the rest of society deserve. anyone pushing on those other agendas clearly is willing to sacrifice justice for their personal biases - that's the president on down to the rest of the crowd and they fall on both sides of the 'preconceived' verdict line. ... 10. His statement was about the grand jury portion of the law. Are you saying they should skip that part and go straight to trial? Edit: My personal (a very uninformed) slant? Sounds like Zimmerman has a pretty big chip on his shoulder. Don't know anything about the kid. I think the 'community' outcry and the public attention will make it very hard for a 'real' case to occur that's not driven by PR or politics rather than evidence collection and presentation. 12. That's what is taught in the Coach Course for Cat G jumps, yes. Surely you realize there is more to Coaching than just Cat G and more involved than what is taught in the course, right? It's not a Cat G thing - I'd say that specific plan (turn and track as a means to show the unattentive student that the dive is over) applies to any coach jump - not just Cat G student is knocked unconscious - sure, catch him and pull for him - coach or AFFI at that point - I agree about special cases, but that goes for any dive, IMO. Even fun jumps with newbies, I'll sometimes try to find out who has an AAD and who doesn't - just in case (yes, call me obsessive compulsive, or a good planner, either way ) ... 13. Seriously, even if you get away from us and start doing beautiful carving belly turns, then clean and still head down, and finally we start doing sitfly transitions and docks. In the end, I will probably think (I will have to assume this worst case scenario) you are a very good tunnel advocate with no freaking CLUE as to pull time and altitude awareness. 14. Seems like a waste of your money. One - you won't get out the door without me or any AFFI's that I know. Two - if you mess up the dive - I won't pass you. Tell me later you have a few hundred dives - good for you - you still failed level A. You could be busted back until you now do a refresher dive. If you show extra skill, we can accommodate that, provided the jump requirements are met - if it's a Cat A, you won't be released though. I've encouraged extra turns, etc on jumps with talented students - for the extra learning. Three - I always ask - has anyone ever jumped before? (Tandem, static, line, this is a big retrain). If you LIE to me, then we'll have other issues afterwards. But, if you pay for a first jump course, you'll get a first jump course. It's a free market (so far). I have no issue with experienced jumpers taking a refresher any time they want to. I'll do the train and the jump as normal and take the fee and do the best I can regardless. 15. Without further facts, that would be a racist statement. You would have to look at incident and conviction rates before you could get even close to making such a statement. You would have to equalize for social and economic status etc. Dismissing all that by just claiming that blacks are more violent because they make up a disproportionate block in the prion population would indeed be racist. Without further facts, If you call that person racist - then you are assuming he's assigning causation to the statement. that assumption might, or might not be true. He might have done his homework as you suggest. The fact the default accusation is "he's a racist" rather than asking "why is he making that claim" is pretty sad, really. As you state. he might be inferring correlation, not causation. Such as the urban loading by demongraphics, income, or family aspects you note The arrest rates might not be racist - but the claims that the correlated item are racist based, or a result of old time racist activities might very well be. it's always deeper than just guys like wslc enjoying his name calling - it's even sadder and lazier, when asked "what's your basis for that accusation" to get a response "2+2=4" is obstructive and doesn't help the cause at all - there might be a really good discussion in there that was just dismissed - I'd say that the high incarceration rate is a symptom, but taking each case 1 at a time, one would really have to question if each single case was corrupt and unfair if we would take each person one at a time- assess them based on their character and actions - avoiding the cosmetic crap people seemed so obsessed with - it would be a better world by far ... 16. If it's a "Coach" jump, then your agreement is to turn and track, and even dump - at the agreed hard deck - so the student sees that. Honestly, I think that's the best way to save that guy from getting hurt. (I could come up with exceptions to that rule, but that's my baseline) Dive the plan. If the Coach (even AFF rated) deviates from that plan (i.e., let the dive get low enough that they feel they need to 'save' the student rather than show a turn and dump at the planned altitude) - then the Coach screwed up. The asshole is usually the guy that changed the plan. YMMV ... 17. Which coaches would you recommend for belly flying? I need to caviat that - all the coaches I've met and flown with are great in every orientation. So this means specifically coaches that focus on mantis/comp type flying - there are a couple there that can compete at the pro level in 4way IMO (you should see Rusty flying 4-way - wow). the others can also teach those camps as well. call and ask, the staff changes, but they can let you know who's appropriate for the level you are currently at. at 17 jumps (your profile) you can't go wrong with any of the instructors. ... 23. No I don't. 'taxation' is taxation. Government makes me pay for tags for my car. Government pays for the tags for my car and I pay for it through income taxes. It's the same thing. nonsense, the only way it's the same, is if everyone had to pay the same AMOUNT in taxes (not the same rate, just a uniform fee) - and then everyone then gets the exact same products also (at which point, it would be silly then to let the gov be the middleman) if not, it still results in some paying more and some paying less for the same products - your example on tags: gov makes you pay for the tags? you are out $100, everybody that drives is out $100 each gov pays for tags? you might own 3 or 4 cars, someone else only owns 1 car, someone else doesn't even drive at all - yet they all still pay for those tags. Alternately, someone with a lot of income pays a LOT for his tags,in the end than someone that pays zero income tax - yet both get their tags...... ... But one might talk to a good PD rep and have them explain the diff between the Katana and the Stiletto and why each was designed that way. Lots of searches here too. As I understand it, though, the crossfire is more like a stiletto than a katana. But really experienced guys like AggieD or others will correct me if I'm wrong. (and I'm glad to learn anytime those guys talk).
