  1. They don't pay it, they just collect it. true, thanks for the correction. But you missed the point. The shops lose out on business, so they still are penalized, aren't they? ... 3. Not just internet businesses, but small brick and mortar businesses that people seem to think this will help. I think it's hilarious that the brick and mortar businesses are complaining and want the internet guys don't pay the tax too. The real attack should be the brick and mortar complaining that they have to pay the tax itself. Instead of lobbying for higher taxes on their competitors, they need to lobby for eliminating the cumbersome load by the states. ... 4. Better solution would be to eliminate sales tax altogether. Agree, (I deleted your extra nonsense). BUT, if they did your common sense action, then how on earth will the Feds shoe-horn in a VAT later? ???? ... 5. The states want their cut. Each one different than every other one. Painful for the seller. Heck, in our state, my wife has to figure out the local tax rules too for people that live in the metro vs out of metro. It's nuts. Simple solution - If the States MUST take their cut, then have internet sales be a low single tax regardless of where the buyer lives. Make the states compete for that business. They'll have to lower their taxes to match or risk losing all those "brick and mortar" businesses. ... 7. See, I see it differently. 1 - Keep the law against murder. 2 - Charge a Fee for a permit to murder. 3 - Since lawbreakers will murder regardless of there being a law, just think how much money we could collect by requiring them to pay for a permit. That money can be used for education. Or free abortions. Or meals on wheels. Or whatever we think is cool right now. 4 - Alternately, we could discourage murder by increasing the cost of the permit up to the point that the lawbreakers can't afford to murder. However, if the cost is too prohibitive, then only the rich can afford the permit. Since that's unfair, we could possibly start a fund to subsidize permits for the very poor. Maybe a tax on clothes, or a bonding bill. Edit: nooo, I rethought that. just subsidizing the permits for the poor makes no sense. That money really should just go into the general fund. We might need a tax increase to support that. It's pretty obvious, at least for those that don't hate children. ... 12. here's the other bit...(I know you set this up). So, when you were your kid's age, did you drop the F-bomb 5 times/sentence? Perhaps the right amount of 'violence' is somewhere between a kind and gentle talking to (your style) and a slap in the face (your mom's old style). I suspect a swat on the butt that startles but doesn't hurt, or even stings enough to make a toddler cry is probably close to the right balance when the talking to doesn't work. YMMV, call it whatever makes you happy. (have a good weekend) ... 13. unacceptable violence, she should have found another way are you ok? did you call social services? did it drive you gay? If so, have you either held a press conference, or quietly told your close friends? I blame George Bush, and Obama. I hope your family's history of violence doesn't keep you from buying guns. 14. I appreciate the honesty of using "swat" in the description instead of the normal ramp-up of "hit" "assault" "knife wound" "axe strike" verbage normally used to inhibit the discussion. (seriously) It makes for a cleaner and more reasonable debate and your point is clear and made in a way that you have to look at it for what it is (a good point) rather than jumping off on a tangent. ... 15. Quite true. And what do we suppose the reason is for such laws? Anyone? Beuller? this is a digression, but why would there be a different set of rules and penalties for that crime just based on being a senior vs any other citizen? Is it, then, ok to commit battery on a 25 year old? Is it less wrong? I suspect Florida favors stricter penalties because the population has a TON of seniors voting and they want 'special' treatment - so the members of legislature pander to them with nice sounding laws like this and they get more votes to do this stuff. just like any voting block that doesn't understand equality. ... 17. Oh, come on. you are using the word "hitting" to get a rise. If you are against spanking, then I think that's each parent's choice. If you are against hitting and assault, then I'm with you. If you just want to blanket call 'spanking' to be the same as hitting and assault, then I think you need to define it more specifically so we understand just where you (and Normiss and everyone that's being dramatic about it) draw that line. I've seen parents cross the line, but I've seen others that clearly don't - I don't want to demonize that 2nd group just because I'm outraged over the 1st. have you ever just taken your child firmly by the arm and made them sit in a chair? If so, you are a horrible parent that abuses your child and doesn't have the tools for raising kids. By your argument, seating your kid down likely hurts worse (and has more potential to leave a mark on those little helpless arms), than a swat on the butt. Therefore, since the swat = assault, then the firm seating must be > assault ... 18. I think the disconnect is on purpose to push the argument. "spanking" "hitting" "discipline" can be in many forms. Not all physical. not even close "abuse" can be other things, in addition to physical. It can even be having a lax household without rules such that the kids turn out horrible. I wonder if someone could even make the argument that withholding a spanking is abusive if the kid results in someone spoiled and 'abusive' to other kids....I'm sure at some point, some kid will win a law suit against his parents, sometime, for being too soft on him... it's such an obtuse thread with so many strawmen and odd/conflictive posturing, I'm sure we're breaking a fire code somewhere. ... 23. IMO, in general, It's a great gift for a 5 year old. any assumption that this doesn't have a caviat about proper training and supervision is just trolling not in general, but specifically? setting the age? 5 vs 13, etc? well that depends upon the kid, the parents, the type of gun, and where they live and what's normal for the 'village' and culture of that community. YMMV if you think of kids as living in a tightly packed urban areas, vs kids that grew up around guns and live on a farm or more rural area. etc etc etc I know a lot of so called adults that I wouldn't give a sling shot to with or without proper supervision. Most of them get to drive cars. Also a mistake. But that doesn't change my general opinion on teaching kids responsibility. ...
