On that statement, you are not in the minority on this by any means - but no one is going to support you when you use the phrases "ass whooping" and "beating" so glibly when talking about something entirely on a different level that just supports the strawmen they use when they try equate a simple spanking with true abuse as long as the discussion has people calling a swat on a hand or a single spank on the butt to be the same as breaking arms and concussions, there really is no discussion to be had as long as the 'tough guys' here continue state they "got beatings" when they really got a stern talking to and two spanks, there really is no discussion to be had as long as the kids that truly got abused try to rationalize their parents behavior as simple corporal punishment, there really is no discussion to be had the question is really about what crosses the line and what doesn't - the real starting point is to ask yourself "when I punish my child for something. Am I angry, or am I in control and rational?" ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

I like this thread. It really highlights how politicians think. And people intrenched in a restrictive society think. 1 - Regular cars are required to go through dealers for some reason. 2 - The Tesla group argued that the Tesla isn't a 'regular car' so they didn't need to be restricted like those other guys. 3 - Other guys cried that this is not a fair competitive position. So they scream that the other guy should be bound like they are. 4 - So a law was passed to level the playing field. By bounding the other guy to the same rules. --- so far, so good, right? everybody is on equal playing ground. but the idiotic thing that happened was the law required Teslas to be sold under the same restrictions no one even asked about the other alternative - to remove the restrictions on the regular car sales It's always telling that, when given a choice to either add restrictions, or reduce restrictions. Government will choose to (((fill in the blank and win a prize))) and people think this is normal and not odd ... they sure are, always have, now it's just more unashamedly public, last time something like this happened was under the Clinton's right? either people will condone it, or they'll finally see it for what it is and call for change (I suspect we can find examples done under Repubs too. Politicians crave power, and they are all vindictive little wussies too. Not a great combo) Plus side - we haven't seen anyone here actually condone it. But it's early yet....... ... How about go after all of them at once? Wipe out picking winners and losers completely. No subsidies, no penalties, single tax rates, businesses survive or fail based on their performance only. I don't see how it's anyone's business other than her's and her family and close friends.... Courage to make the choice vs cowardly to not fight it, lots of ways to spin it (IMHO? - I'll go with gutsy, and always making a -decision- is something to approve of). One thing we do know, is every fart some people make will hit the press. Two things we actually know - very rich hollywood types will have the best cosmetic surgeons money can hire. ... I agree. I would just like to ensure that, when a business restricts people from arming themselves, that the business is liable for protecting those people. They would then think twice about just hanging a sign. It would make everyone think twice about the lack of logic involved in that decision.... ... I guess we can chalk this up to ANOTHER mass shooting at a "gun free zone". Schools, dayscares, businesses that ban possession on premises, parades... Are we seeing the trend here people? I think it's contingent upon businesses that ban guns to have ACTIVE means to check and ensure nobody sneaks one in. It's their choice, but then it's their responsibility to protect those inside. Clearly they are failing with the current policy of - "Post a Sign and bury head in sand" ... yep, I know I'm less sick of millionaire athletes fighting with the billionaire owners. I'm sick of tax payer money subsidizing their business when they just don't need it. sure - I'm pointing out that, IMO, sports as a whole isn't hurt at all by it. Players are motivated to higher performance to get those big paychecks and the bar is raised every season as a result. If the fans are willing to pay what they do, no one is hurt by it. We get hurt when governments at all levels try to subsidize pro sports in any way. it's not an area that should be paid for involuntarily by any individual. If we are outraged at the paychecks of ANY participant in a sport, then why are we subsidizing stadiums, roads, etc preferentially over any other business? ... the fans are 'choosing' to pay what they pay - the market defines it. Any fan, any time, can just walk away from it and keep their money. I have no sympathies in this aspect. In otherwords - there is no "must" when they pay more here is a real issue - this is just plain wrong. (there is no "asking" when it comes to taxes - there is no choice there with this abuse) ... Based on worth to humanity, absolutely. Based on how much they bring in to the university, well, football and basketball sell tickets and TV money in the major colleges, and bring in tons of dollars . . the 'worth to humanity' comment is totally subjective, how do you know what's worth it and what's not for that broad a concept? - though it does make a nice sounding comment schools have a mission, make money,.., develop people..., whatever they choose it to be - if staff want to think they have some subjective 'higher calling' in order to sleep at night, or to feel like they are better than other drones, that's great - they should work at a school that 'really' has that mission. But if the purpose is revenue generation, then pretty much the salaries should align to the mission of the business and reward those that succeed at that mission what gets me when (can't speak for Kallend, but a general observation) is profs that are good teachers, will also complain about other profs that focus on research instead (getting grant$ and getting publi$hed) which also generates positive return for the business....... It's clear, that schools that pay more for athletics clearly have their true mission statement defined (despite whatever 'mission' they claim, actions speak). Don't like it? work elsewhere, or get the mission redefined. The claim that coaches (pro athletes, etc etc etc) should be paid less is also a non-starter - complaining that someone negotiated the absolute best deal for their services is really just a lever into salary controls by some agency. People that think that's a good idea just really haven't thought it through at all. Frankly, the back door attack on that situation is already being escalated through taxes, fees, penalties, etc anyway. ... we sure do - 1 - the vendor looks at the proof of age (issued once by the local gov agency) and then sells or doesn't sell without any other steps required - that's checking the person 2 - the vendor DOESN'T call a federal department for each and every sale and the department approves that sale. that's not checking the person, it's approving the purchase (and likely keeping a record) of each sale. Could you just imagine it? 1 - go to liquor store 2 - give ID to clerk 3 - clerk calls the US department of alcohol sales and provides: the list of each item to be purchased, the ID number. 4 - department does a check to make sure that the person on the ID has not aged in a non-linear way 5 - department gives the go ahead to clerk 6 - clerk records the approval and finishes the sale (now the store and the gov department have a list of each bottle of beer, wine and liquor you just bought) 7 - gov 'promises' to periodically clear the list of alcohol bought by each consumer. really, they "promise" to. No, seriously, they will delete it - because any paper or electronic record can just be deleted and the government wouldn't keep that info for future use - ... I think this is a good lessons learned for all new jumpers. 1 - Newbies have to learn that skydivers are just people. Skydivers are not special in any way. There are good and bad people in the sport - just like anyone else. 2 - No, it's not a big happy 'family' of like minded people. It's a hobby. That's all. It's just like anyone in any subgroup. 3 - The rules of dealing with others does apply. Just like anyone in any subgroup. 4 - There is not money to made in the sport. If someone is full time and you are doing business with them, keep that fact in mind. They might have to put food on the table on a day to day business. That means you need to be on guard for the small portion of people that might bend the rules if put in a corner. (just like anyone in any subgroup) 5 - No, I'm not kidding, no matter how jazzed and upbeat you are, people in the sport that you have never met are not automatically your "sky brothers and sisters". no.....seriously. Go to some new DZ and leave your stuff lying around, and you might just find your Neptune or new camera stolen. (just like going to any other subgroup of people - getting a message here) 6 - no, seriously. You already have a family. 7 - Really, I wouldn't leave my wallet sitting on the table at a bowling alley. Why would you buy something sight unseen from a stranger? 8 - BUT, if you do find a group of skydivers that are cool and like you and you have a connection with. Hold onto them, it's pretty great (just like any other activity or set of friends). But I'd say that for any circle of friends, regardless of the common activities we share. But I won't expand that connection to strangers I've never spent time with regardless of the fact that they also like to jump. a bit of a rant. quite a bit overboard. sorry about that. But I cringe every time I hear a new jumper, excited about the activity, falsely extending that excitement to all people in the activity. ....good luck on finding good gear or getting this one resized for you. ...
