We also had a jumper on the west coast, Blind John. He would be signaled at pull time by a hard shake from fellow jumpers and guided in to land via radio.

I did not know this part. I have a couple of experienced deaf skydiver friends who have stated that they would like to become tandem masters. Is the fact they're deaf going to disqualify them? Even if there are deaf tandem customers? I don't think that's true. I just got my medical renewed and I wear hearing aids. Not a single question about hearing was asked. It was also NOT noted on my card. If there was a hearing requirement I'm sure they would have put on my card that I must wear hearing aids like they do with glasses.

I've done the same thing twice in the gym. First time I felt it coming and tried to sit down and ended up sitting in the garbage can near the reception area. Got quite the audience. Second I was a little quicker and made it to the bathroom to get some water and ended up passing out on the floor. Needless to say I've learned my lession about exercising on a empty stomach.

While I agree with you about the small reserve, I fail to see how jump numbers relate to a no-flare, no-hands landing. If anyone does that, it's gonna be bumpy. The laws of physics don't change when you get to a certain jump number! Experience matters. Those with experience have a much better chance of walking away from that scenario as they (hopefully) would understand how to fly and land in such a way as to avoid injury. Think broken arm(s). On the other side if you were knocked out I'm sure you'd be wishing for the larger reserve when and if you ever woke up.

Please don't take this the wrong way as I'm a huge animal lover and have always had them. I mean this in the dogs best interest. I don't know much about hip dysplasia but it sounds like your dog is in A LOT of pain over this. Have you thought about putting him to sleep instead of trying to fix this and keep having him suffer? Or is it really fixable enough? I wish you and your dog the best in getting through this!

Just some things they taught in my class but a lot of people I've seen do otherwise: Do use the kill switch to turn off the bike Don't put it in neutral when at a stop light/sign Ride with both hands (but yeah it's cool to ride one handed and yes I do it too )

Good information, and a little scary that on 'normal' exits we are only a couple feet at most from hitting the tail every jump. Still it didn't clarify if Eric Hedges exited from the plane while it was on a level jump run, pilot green light given. Statistics on that scenario I'd really like to know.

Read this: Fatality - Tail Strike - Bowling Green, MO - June 21st, 2008 The jumper did not exit the plane at 'the right time'. He exited early while the aircraft was still climbing. (at least that's the consesus from reading the thread) Would be interesting to know of any tail strikes from leveled off planes on jump run. I do know of a few from climbing hop & pops

I would like recommendations on a Canopy Course, please.
tetra316 replied to doug925's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
What about the PD guys, like they did with the three day course in Sebastian last year? I heard there were a couple of those this year also. -
If you've already done one AFF jump why won't they do another? Did you fall too fast or something to scare them off?

I tore my ACL in July, complete, and meniscus. Had surgery in September and started jumping again in March. I'm just now starting to feel really good and not worry as much about it. Although I'm sure it didn't help that I banged in on exit about 6 weeks ago also Stay current with pt, it definitely does make a difference. Running also helped me to loosen it up more. I did buy a brace but do not wear it. My doctor and pt both advised against it when pressed. They feel that if it is healthy enough to be doing those activities in the first place you do not need a brace. A brace hinders strengthening of the area as you are relying on the brace instead of your leg muscles to protect you. I wore it a few times but actually feel better without it. Granted I'm at 9 months now from surgery not just a couple. At he moment it's more of a mental issue getting over the fear of reinjuring it.

Make sure you really know how to belly fly. I've seen people start freeflying right off student status and then think they should be able to start coaching once they hit 200 jumps.

I bought it from Batteries Plus. No little bag with screws and nuts. Still beats the $100 the dealership wanted to charge me though.
-
So I finally got around to getting a new motorcycle battery and when I went to hook it up I realized I did not have the nuts to tighten down the screw on the terminals. The old battery apparently didn't need it, maybe the screw fit tight enough without one. I don't have the old one anymore since I traded it in. So the question is can I just use electrical tape to hold the connections to the terminals tightly until I figure out where to find the right size nuts(no luck at home depot)? I figure why not. The terminal covers are plastic so it obviously doesn't heat up enough to melt it. Or am I going to get home tomorrow and have completely screw up the battery/connections?

Private pilots flying jumpers
tetra316 replied to BillyMongilly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
QuoteRemember the incident a few years back in Oregon where the plane went in with no one on board? That was a private pilot at the controls and the FAA ruled it was perfectly legal because of the "shared use" waiver. The pilot made his first jump and the plane was destroyed. Look it up! reply] There were no tandems on that plane. I believe therefore it was much easier to rule legal due to shared use. With a tandem on board I highly doubt you would get the same outcome. -
You pay $18 for a tandem pack?!! Lodi pays only $5. Slot would be $30 instead of $50. And probably $25 for the instructor. Totaling $60 instead of $103. So they have a margin half that but do many times more than twice the jumps.
-
But he does pay his packers and instructors the lowest rates I've seen anywhere.

And it would be even more doable if you could get him packing -
Jump prices when you started
tetra316 replied to BillyVance's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
2002 - $3 to get on the plane and $1 for every 1000ft. -
I see this everywhere, but I can't wrap my brain around it. Is the DZO a trust funder? Do their planes run on water? How can the DZ break even with such low prices? What's the secret? Skydive Orange just had to go to $25 about a month ago. I wonder if their $99 tandems have gone up or if they are the same. All I've ever heard is volume. He can have his prices so low because it's effectively a tandem mill. I'm sure him owning everything outright has something to do with it too.

Low Pull Artists vs. Swoopers
tetra316 replied to zoobrothertom's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Nah, most people have just turned into turbine brats. I 'grew up' on a cessna dz and as such have absolutely no problem exiting at 2000. Most turbine brats would never consider that. Just a matter of perspective. -
How long until you were getting paid?
tetra316 replied to VTmotoMike08's topic in Photography and Video
It depends totally on the dz you are at. I started at a small cessna dz and ended up getting paid vids after only 10 or so practice jumps. Of course this resulted in so-so videos and a couple complete mess ups. At the time there was only one other person really doing videos and a so-so video was better than none they thought. Had I gone to a larger dz I'm sure there is no way I would have been allowed to do vids until I had polished my video skills a lot better. I'm still not sure they would let me now If you want to become a really good video person you have to be a very good flyer, belly and ff. Then you can capture it all no matter what happens with the tandem, sloppy exits and whatnots, imho. I wish I had taken the time to just fly videos with out the pressure of doing a 'live' one. But everyone likes to get paid if someone is offereing -
You're just a little crazy What about if you had a hard opening? Keeping your neck in alignment has to be better than looking up and taking the force with a bent neck....

No extra holes. The strap goes underneath the mounting bracket and is held in place once the bracket is secured to the helmet. And the buckle does not scratch my camera
