Hmmm, considering you live in south florida, how do you feel about Palmetto bugs? For those not familiar with these guys: The Palmetto Bug One of the group commonly referred to as "Palmetto Bugs", the American roach is the largest (1-3/8" to 2-1/8") of the roaches infesting homes. It has reddish brown wings and is a good flyer. (yep, a huge, flying roach ) American roaches often invade from sewer systems and heavily mulched areas. The female attaches the egg capsule, containing 15-18 eggs, in high areas in garages, closets, utility rooms and fireplaces. Found nearly anywhere in the house, American roaches contaminate food, carry disease, damage book bindings, fabrics and wallpaper.

But what if they're infringing on me because of their choices? What if under canopy they have flashbacks because it was okay for them to do a bunch of acid the night before? You 'might' want separate 'use' and 'impairment' ...well you might want to read up on the fallacy of flashbacks also. This 'fact' is right up there with 'students going blind staring at the sun' and other scare tactics. The PTA (Parent Teachers Association) unabashedly takes credit for much of these tactics under the philolophy of 'whatever works to keeps kids off drugs'. I don't like skydiving around impaired skydivers. I am much more concerned with skydivers who drink themselves stupid and go skydiving that day, than I am with those passing a blunt around the bonfire. During the day of skydiving, the alcohol user is impaired ...by just about any reasonable test of perception, cognition and reaction time. The pot smokers will test unimpaired. Thems the facts. The other drugs you mentioned, well, I don't want to be around them ...anywhere. The final thing I ask you to think about (with no disrespect intended) is your concern for safety vs your need to control. In short, I've seen two DZ's in 30 years where I thought the drug use was out of hand ...neither exists anymore. BSBD, Michael

Yeah. The body will do amazing things, the mind especially, to protect its self and such. Over two decades of ER/Trauma/ICU and I still am periodically amazed at just how much punishment the body and mind can take ...and survive. OTOH, some just seem to drift out of this life quite easily. I'm not sure, but it seems like some just ...give up. Michael

Benadryl is excellent for allergies. It is, however, a sedating antihistamine. Every OTC sleep aid I've seen has diphenhydramine (benadryl) as the active ingredient. I wouldn't recomment it for activities that require you to be alert. Michael

I understand that. That's also why if you'll notice in my posts about this topic to newbies, I specifically state training tandems or tandem progression tandems or Cat A/Cat B tandems. I specifically seperate the "fun" tandems from the training tandems. Yes, my DZ is definately not the norm, BUT there are a lot of DZs out there that have a really good tandem progression method, similar to what is laid out in the USPA's ISP. So clumping all DZs together that "require" a tandem prior to AFF as money grabbers is very very incorrect. Actually, its kind of insulting. Oh, btw, as a side note, my DZ offers regular AFF as well as IAD, but only a few have decided not to do the tandem progression. Especially once they see the price break down.

First, I wonder how you know this. Second, how many times in our life do we have the opportunity to dig deep down into your soul and discover who you are and what you are capable of? How many times would you pass? I don't think you a pussy. I do believe most DZ businesses deny you the opportunity to find out more about yourself. AggieDave says his DZ saves you$300. If everyone who did 2-3 'working' tandems went on to AFF, he might have a valid point. Thing is, few do and so the DZ herds everyone through the tandem ride cause it is a lean, green money machine. The saving the AFF student money (assuming your premise is valid) is thrown in as the rationale for selling more rides. No offense Dave, if you give a good ride and are pleasant with your customers, I have no gripe with you. Your desire and enthusiasm are admirable. I felt much the same way about medical care in my early career. Michael
