  5. the 167 was our average speed through the jump but yea i was not gaining any "ground" when i was in a stand. and the other jumper was in a big daffy trying to go as slow as possible. Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  6. what are you guys averaging in a sit/stand? Did a jump yesterday and averaged about 167 but couldn't stay with a person in a head down and i was in a full on stand. any advice on going faster in a head up position? thanks Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

  11. here is a condenced version of swooper-x's response. the more speed you have the longer you can stay on rears. the smoother the transition from rears to toggles the better. the only way you know where to transfer from rears to toggles is by experience, there is no calculations for it as it changes every swoop. 12. Our first NWCPC event went off beautifully this past weekend. Perfect conditions of 70-75 degree's and no wind all day provided some great swooping and a great learning environment. There was little lighter than expected turnout for this first competition but those ones that did show learned a lot and are already gearing up for our next meet at Skydive Oregon on June 25/26. Consistancy proved to be the way to first place as Tom Phillips demonstrated taking home the majority of prize money and prizes. there was also a very tight battle for second between Brad Gorman, Jim Renfro, and Stuart Schoenfeld, all tying for 2nd and having to decide the placings on individual events and scores. Eugene Skydivers in Creswell, OR provided the backdrop for this event and did fantastic. Infinity Container, Performance Designs, Alti-2, Openingshock, and Hop N' Pop productions also provided the great prizes for the winners and judges ranging from t-shirts, to DVD's, to gift certificates. The final standings are as follows: 1. Tom Phillips- xaos 2. Brad Gorman- Velocity 3. Jim Renfro- VX 4. Stuart Schoenfeld- VX 5. Dan Self- xaos 6. Steve Sherble- Katana The next meet will be at Skydive Oregon on the weekend of June 25th and 26th. There will be more prizes and more money at stake so let's get geared up for another great meet. Pictures coming soon. Contact me at superstu81469@yahoo.com for more details or go to the NWCPC's section on canopypilotingcircuit.com. 14. i've jumped a vx for the past 500+ jumps or so and i've done camera jumps with it and i just don't watch the openings, i look at the horizan. but yes, the opening on the vx definetly are not a xaos openings. I love my VX though primarily because it's one of the most challenging canopies i've flown. i've also put about 50+ jumps on a velocity, which isn't all that much but enough to make a rough juddgment on it. i was really torn between which canopy to get because of the way the velo flew and the ease of it's swooping ability. to me any way, the velo was a lot easier to swoop its like on autopilot compared to the VX. now i'm not saying which canopy is better because to be honest IF there is a difference in performance from one canopy to another i don't think it's noticable and the pilot is still the determining factor. the xaos, i wasn't all that impressed with but i'm thinking maybe i tried one that was out of trim or was a little wierd. cause it felt more like a 9 cell then a xbraced canopy, meaning not as rigid. the openings on the one i tried were not the openings i've seen on countless other xaos's either, so really i would have to say i havne't even jumped a xaos yet. the JVX i've put about 10-15 jumps on it and is a definate improvment on the VX. openings, flight characteristics, and SWOOPING all are absolutely fantastic. and the canopy is so much smoother to fly and swoop, oh it's great. i wrote up a little review and it's posted somewhere on this forum. but if i had $2500 to spend taht would be it, but that's just it i don't and that's a very steep price. one thing to note. the VX came out in 99' and has not changed since then. if you buy a brand new vx now it's the same planform and trim as in 99', but that's what the JVX is for. the velocity on the other hand is not the same today as it was in past seasons, there have been more 'tweakage' going on. and the velocity that the factory team flies is not anything like 'regular' production line velocity that us 'regular' jumpers fly. from what i hear the factory team's velocities and the JVX are the only 2 canopies specifically designed for rear riser flying and swooping, but that is just from what i hear. damn that turned out to be a lot longer post then origninally intended. 17. to be honest, the reason why i STARTED gripping higher was because i saw the pro's doing it adn so i figured their had to be a reason for it. now however, i just feel more comfortable gripping as high as possible because i feel i have more control then if i gripped lower. also, your picture doesn't look like you're gripping too low. what size are your risers? 18. "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make'm drink." is the old saying. people can be taught and given all the knowledge in the wrorld but it's only when they are completely honest with themselves will they start to learn faster and "drink" from the water. 19. almost everyone has now heard of the extreme amount of weight most of the pro's have been carrying to go the extreme distances. but i'm kind of wondering how many of us non-pro's are experimenting/ training with 40, 50, even 60 pounds of lead? I ask this out of concern, concern that many of us (99% of us) aren't at their level yet to be competitive and people will put themselves at greater risk by putting on 40+ pounds of lead because they see the 'pros' doing this. so, i was just wondering who is loading up and would like to know their reasons for doing so? i also would like to add one more thing, the pilot is the determining factor, if there was no added weight allowed the pilot and their technique would be the determining factor. this said working on ones technique without weight and not your survival with 40+ of crap hanging off of you will in the end benefit you more. just my curiousity and my .02, please post your thoughts Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  20. pilots use instruments to land planes, canopy pilots should be using instruments to land their canopies. Personally i have a neptune and i know that when i start my 270 at 680-710' it should be good. so yes, digital altimeters help but don't rely soley off altimeters its good to get a site picture as well.
