When the night-womens-world-record-attempt was going on, a bunch of the guys lined up as the girls walked out to the plane. The cameras were on the other side, videoing the women as they walked to the plane and waved to them. The guys dropped trou, turned around and mooned the girls. It was dark enough that the news crew didn't noticed. The women were laughing as they walked by. It showed up on the 11pm news. You could see us in the background barely.

Lockerbie bomber to be set free?!? Really?

Can't we just split the difference on this issue? Let's send him 50% of the way home... right about the middle of the Med. ...green light... exit! exit! exit! -
There is also the obvious solution - apartments. Move in, live there for 2 years, it becomes cluttered, then you move. The cleaning solution - avoidance. Sure, they get a $50 cleaning deposit, but it's a matter of how much your time is worth. If you cleaned the normal amount... say 1 hour a month. Then, that's nearly 24 hours over the course of 2 years, or about $2 an hour. Nobody works for that. It's all about the math.

You mean they'd burn people at the stake or something. That some organization today would still have a section devoted to exorcism of demonic spirits from people. They'd send a priest around to cast the spirt out of the body. That sort of thing? Exactly. If someone was about to get hit by a bicycle, I'd shout a warning, and a bicycle would only bruise you. Hell is an eternity of torment. Far more important. Anyone who was from the Legions of Satan and leading my friends/family/country towards eternal suffering would have to be dealt with. Christians seem to be fairly unconcerned about it. Of course, the Taliban is ok with making money off of opium. No higher moral ground there. Maybe they can buy a gold gargoyle from the Vatican.

It's important to go for the full effect.

I'm sure that the Muslims in the middle east would love that one. They have such a vast sense of humor about religion and would love to hear how they share a religious affiliation with the Christians. Other than cutting off the heads of any people who make statements like that, I'm sure they would get a big chuckle. It's pretty much a yes/no belief system. All the sides believe that they are correct and the other side is incorrect. However, Christians aren't usually that serious about their beliefs and won't actually state it to avoid "offending" anyone. If they really believed in the whole Hell thing, they would make some solid statements about how dangerous the other religions are. It's pretty much God/Satan, no middle ground. Pick a side and have some conviction.

St Peter... "Uhh, Ron, I was looking at the internet in Sept and noticed your mention of other 'higher powers' and such..." Seems like if you are a Christian, then there is only one higher power. You can't really recognize the "others" as valid. I am surprised that you are accepting of that. If they understand Allah to be The Higher Power and obviously reject Christianity, then I can't see how Christians would support the concept. (Chemical dependency isn't necessarily alcohol. It could be painkillers, some type of legal pharmacy stuff that got out of hand. Muslims could get into a 12-step program on a basis that didn't conflict with their religion. Just an example.)

Well, that just wiped out and negated the professional field of substance abuse/chemical dependency. I retired just in the nick of time, eh. I'm sure that a free program is more popular than the $40 an hour psychologist. The "whatever is the most popular is correct" technique of decision-making is amazingly poor. Perhaps that is how they started their chemical dependency. The "higher power" technique is crutch substitution. It provides a stopgap measure for people whose problems have overwhelmed them. "I can't deal with my problems without a drink." "Put all your problems in the hands of the mythical being and don't worry." That's not a solution. The goal is problem solving not problem avoidance. Psychiatrists may provide medication in the short term until actual healing can occur, but the goal is healing. No, the goal is "abstinence based recovery." Once an alcoholic/addict always an alcoholic/addict. There is no cure, only management. At least that is the way it is at this time. The cost of a licensed and certified mental health counselor on a private basis is more like $150/hour. Most insurance companies will pay for three sessions. Chemical dependency is a problem. However, it may be a symptom, not the core problem. By avoiding the dependency, you mitigate the health impacts and the life issues. That is certainly helpful, but it is not a resolution. However, resolving the core emotional problem is the actual goal of therapy. I wouldn't expect any therapist to change years of behavior in 3 sessions. Therefore, the popularity of free programs. Back to my original premise, I would expect that the "higher power" in Muslim countries of the middle East to not be Christian. Should such a program exist without Jesus? Would you support such a program? Would it be effective?

Did 6 4-way jumps. One of the guys has been out of town for a few months and was getting current again.

Megan Fox is a man ...in keeping with our theme.

The normal fun, promoted by the dz locals and some well-intentioned friends. We had so much fun with the pajama party that we decided that we needed another opportunity to dress up. This time, it's grass skirts, etc.

Higher powers? Which one is the valid one? For the Druids, animism promoted the idea that spirits lived in rocks, trees, and streams. How about All Hallows Eve where the dead spirits roamed ? That sounds...? Odin, Thor... with their jealousies and anger. The pantheon of Greek gods - one for every occasion. Later, renamed and adopted by the Romans. The Egyptian cat thing. Worshiping cats. There's a winner. Anyone want to go on record as being all about their divine cat? Pretty ridiculous. Those are called myths because they are old and we don't believe in them anymore. The conceptual foundation of invisible beings running around, controlling your life, is the same implausible rubbish. Different from todays religion? Nope. From the first post, the only difference between todays religions is that people accept the one that they grew up with. Todays fervent Christian would be an ardent Muslim if they grew up on another continent. Governments promote religion for their own uses. People need it to avoid facing their psychological issues. Just because people need a crutch does not make it valid. The world would be a much better place without mysticism. There is no "higher power".

Once again you're being a male chauvinist pig and pointing out that the pussy does the laundry. They purr if you rub them just right.

cats doing laundry Sure... we always knew they were practical pets.

The above is pretty much my thoughts on it all. I quit worrying about it years ago. I've answered all the questions that religion purports to help with. So I don't need it. Sometimes, I just tire of seeing the same regurgitation of the same old arguments between the religious camps. Merely more of their previous intransigent positions.

Religion is handy for lots of reasons. - It answers, "why are we here?" Gives us purpose. - It answers, "what happens when i die?" All beings endeavor to exist. - It gives control. "If I just follow these rules, the omnipotent being will protect me." (...with the exception of a Predator finding me when I pick up my cell phone.) Simple answers to complex questions. Simple rules to follow. No thinking necessary. Simple method of controlling life. Simple protection from bad things. The attractions to the concept are obvious. I don't pray to Poseidon to protect me when I swim. I don't consult my horoscope to plan my day. I don't think that the medium can read my palm. Why is it that only Other Peoples religions seem mythical and depressing ?
-
Since we understand how to cause lightning ourselves, we no long believe that it is the sparks from Thor's anvil. Simple explanations for complex questions. However, we are at a point in history where those explanations sound like bad fiction. Even 2000 years ago, can you imagine... "No, really Joseph, it was an angel. Immaculate conception." "Uh-huh." Kind of a hard sell even then. Of course, I'll bet abstinence was easier to make work when girls got married at 12 and spent the previous year in the company of male relatives at all times.
-
My personal theory is that religious belief is based on where you live. The surrounding society. You have a larger chance of being a Christian if you grow up in Montana than Pakistan. It's not a matter of thought, just social pressure. You spend 12 years growing up around people with the same concepts. (Jesus was Jewish first. ) It has little to do with Ultimate Truth, just geography. Governments used to like the idea that everyone was "singing from the same page of the hymn book". One set of moral principles for everyone and a better control device for the govt. When taking over a country, the first thing to do is redefine, or absorb, the religion of the target. (Remember those Druid fertility festivals at Springtime with bunnies and eggs?)

Well it was nice knowing you! once upon a time when I was new to dz.com I managed to piss off damn near everyone... as well. It's a cultural difference. Shah comes from a society where the father of the bride has to come up with a dowry to get rid of them. So, the father is motivated to guide their daughters to be easier to get along with, or he's got to come up with the extra goats.

Years ago, women spent hours washing clothes on a rock down by the stream. Men invented washing machines and now it takes minutes to load the machine. No more gathering firewood, just turn on the stove. Now they want men to operate the machines also? They hardly have anything to do as it is. I think that men have given enough.
