What I'd be fascinated to know is how many people didn't survive trying to get into the sport full time by 'the back door'. "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

I hate to hear this kind of "advice" a few weeks ago I did my 100th jump because it had been 9 months since I had jumped I decided to do a static line jump from 4000ft. Another jumper who has no gear of his own wanted to jump so I loaned him my rig. Jump went fine. (First deliberate downwind landing because of things I learnt on dz.com."don't be afraid to land downwind rather than turn low) anywho back to the point. The other jumper packed my rig and that was the last jump for me that weekend due to weather. This weekend I went to the DZ hoping to get a few jumps but alas the weather again kept us on the ground. While hanging around I asked a new jumper if he would like to learn to pack, so we pulled out my rig and started showing him what to do, only to discover that it had been packed with the risers twisted, ie. as if you steped through the lines. Overhearing my WTF etc. an instructor came over to see what was going on. After sorting it out he asked me " would you have chopped it?" "i said yea sure it would have been a mal" He said "I wouldn't You could land that or even flip yourself through the risers to sort it" My problem is I dont want someones opinions clouding my judgement when it comes time to make that decision. BTW I have had 3 mals and when someone once said " that was'nt a real mal you could have landed that" I replied "no problem I'll pack you one and go up and show me how" "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

Can you pick two options? if you can could you just add options for the 15 or 16 options to allow for this. Or maybe not even so many. How about 100 or less, 100 to 400, 400 to 1000, 1000 to 2000 and over 2000 "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

Would you get more usefull info if you added jump numbers? "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

your post could be taken a number of ways

I don't know about this, in the back of all our minds is not the saying"skydiving is a high risk activity" a factor. If we are then convinced that it is safe, due to repetitive survived jumps, or constant "much safer than it used to be" statements do some not then look for the risk they perceived when they began to jump. I have seen a lot of posts with "I wouldn't do the jump if it was not safe" in other words if there is no added risk it is called safe "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

I must again apoligize for my first post being so badly worded. I thought that putting things like so safe in inverted commas would convey my meaning. also complacent would have been a better word than boring I know that it is a dangerous sport but what I meant to imply was that the risks are being downplayed by constantly pointing out how safe modern equipment it lesson learnt never post drunk "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

Not a reply to you as such just an explanation of what I actually meant. I don't think Skydiving is Safe. What I mean is are we portraying skydiving as being safe? On a FJC I have found instructors emphasise all the safety features of a modern rig, reserve, aad etc. Tandems are marketed as little more than a fairground ride. On my first jump course the standard warning 'Skydiving is a high risk activity which may cause injury or death" was pointed out but treated more as a joke or an advertising slogan. My thoughts were, Is this attitude causing jumpers to look for additional risk? Such as downsizing too soon so as they can be called extreme I think new jumpers are being told too often how safe skydiving is and not often enough how it may kill them Edit It is morning now and my head hurts, maybe I made more sence when I was drunk "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

Sorry to all that has thken the time to reply' but it it is 3am here and I must sleep will reply when I wake up "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

I dont know but you could get badly hurt with one of them dam things "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing
-
Oh God no! I dont ever want to see anybody hurt. What i mean, is it not the danger that has attracted us to the sport? and after a while some see there is not the extreme danger they thought there would be so they turn to swooping etc.??? "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing
-
Have we sanatised our sport to the extent where it should no longer be considered as "extreme"? Before I ever jumped i thought " only mad people would do that" Now that I am involved I see that it is all about safety I find that it is "so safe" that on occasion on a jump I have found it to be booring. the equipment we use is so reliable that the risk now is miniumal compared to the jumpers who poineered the sport. I read a lot about jumpers on high wing loadings getting hurt or worse and I think, are they not the true skydivers who still take "the risk" edit: I am very drunk now and may regret posting this "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

I will be doing my first baloon jump in august. My instructor advised me not to get out under 4000 ft, even though I have hop and poped a few times from 2500 ft from a cesna "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

Never heard of this but would like to know when this started I have only jumped in spain slovakia kenya and ireland so far and apart from the dropzone never had anyone inspect my rig. I am going to Slovakia again in August and would like to know if it applies there. "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing

I think I get what you mean. Is there any situation where you would advise trying ti induce a downplane and cutting away,? Say if you are high and the winds are a bit turbulent? What things apart from your own input can cause a downplane when you are low, "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? kevinwhelan replied to Mockingbird's topic in Safety and Training
Thats nothing! one guy here did 32 yes thirty two static line jumps without geting cleared for freefall he gave up static line and did AFF "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing -

Opening in cloud is a strange experiance no noise and cant see a dam thing. It's fairly common here in Ireland to open in cloud if you are opening high. How did You know what direction to fly in? What I do is a slow right turn until I come out, and give a shout every few seconds and listen for others. BTY was this yourfirst (beer) cloud opening "be honest with yourself. Why do I want to go smaller? It is not going to make my penis longer." ~Brian Germain, on downsizing
