  7. Very true, in London the Turks, Kurds and others did the same thing with no guns at all. 8. And this is exactly why the NRA is so full of shit. Firstly, what applies in Australia does not apply in the US. There was never a constitutional right to own guns, there was always a level of control. The buyback program only targeted a small subset of the weapons that people owned, and the rate of gun crime has gone down if you look at the trends. But then, the NRA were never terribly good at letting facts play any part in their discussions. Maybe you should ACTUALLY look at the statistics rather than going on anecdotal evidence hmmm? http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=17847 I think you can say that gun confiscation had no impact on violent crime. In fact, it went up. I would hope mass shootings never happen again there, but there is no guarantee. What amazes me is that thousands of shotguns were not exempt, or did the government just scare everyone? They try that in the US too, but most know when to call it BS. You see, most Americans believe their government represents them. In real life, we have no government leaders. We have representatives. They have to be reminded, but that's what they are. Statistics? Might want to read this before using Australia as an example... http://www.snopes.com/crime/statistics/ausguns.asp The UK has a ban on certain types of firearms and control on all including shotguns yet since 2007 figures for all crime have been coming down. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/jul/14/crime-statistics-england-wales Just after the 'ban' a year on crime figures were up. So did the 'ban' and gun control cause the surge? Nope. Is the ban responsible for a reduction in crime year on year for the past five years? Nope. The truth is that in the UK we've had gun control for over 100 years and today there are approximatly 2.8 million guns legalty held in the UK. Having the ban or not having the ban made no difference at all to the crime figures or the street culture of violence and use of guns. The only people it affected were the law abiding sportsmen and women. As in the UK firearms have to be kept locked in a safe when not in use it really wasn't and isn't a consideration for criminals when deciding to commit a crime or not, and that hasn't changed before or after the ban. On top of which even people who owned firearms legally in the UK prior to the ban were not allowed to conceal carry like in the US. Result? Bugger all impact on crime either way. 16. This. I'm fine with buying a 5 year old their own .22. I'm not fine with storing it loaded, nor should the child have unsupervised access to it. Blues, Dave I agree. Train the kid properly on how to use it and store it, but still keep the kid supervised and the gun out of reach when not. I'm reminded of the little girl who's become a crack shot with firearms... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f8VmJRuBFY Katelyn is little but she is actually 13 years old. She's had firearm safety drilled into her since she was five and didn't get her first rifle until she was 9. Depends on the child but personally I think those ages are about right although I'll be starting with the safety rules with my daughter a little younger I suspect. As for first gun 9 or 10 sounds reasonable, fully supervised and weapon locked in the vault out of reach at all other times, ammo locked separately. 21. There is no equivalent of the Pope, Islam isn't a single denomination anymore than Christianity, does the Pope speak for Baptist, Anglicans, Methodists etc.. No and Islam is nt organised in the same way as Christianity. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. 23. Shunning public education for women is not a Muslim practice its a cultural practice in some third world countries and rural areas around the world. The same is true of other faiths in the same areas. The criminal punishments you mention are in force in some Muslim countries but not in the majority but seeing as America is one of the top countries in the world for executing its citizens I don't think you are really in a place to try and take the moral high ground here. Child marriage is also a cultural practice around the world not a Islamic one, it takes place among Christians, Hindu and Buddhists across parts of the developing world. 25. A statement I heard today: "If Islam is supposed to be so peaceful, why don't all the Muslim leaders 'here in our country' speak up and condemn these ragheads?!" Admit it, we've ALL heard variations of that same sentiment repeatedly since 2001. Hell, there are friends of mine that continue to send me the most vile garbage privately condemning pretty much whatever visible minority is pissing them off that day. Why is it that we demand Muslim organizations apologize yet we give a pass when violent atrocities are committed by Christians, Jews, Buddhists, or even atheists? Believe me. No one religious, political, or ethnic group has a monopoly on violence and/or terrorism. Not even the WASP's. White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. I am one. A WASP, that is. John [/soapbox] I used to post examples of Muslims condemning Terrorist attacks, there are tons of examples, thousands of Muslims have marched against Islamist terrorism, these days I generally can't be bothered as people who hate hate blindly even when the evidence is right under their noses. Glad to see so many sane posts in this thread (yours included). When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.
