In the late nineteenth century, it was taken over by Russian Jews and turned into a synagogue. Since 1970, it has lain derelict. It has just been reopened as Britain’s first Museum of Immigration. It tells the stories of the Irish and the Jewish immigrants to London. That part of London is very heavily dominated by Bangladeshis. The local Roman Catholic school is approximately 99 percent Bangladeshi Muslims. And they came to see the museum, and they immediately identified with the Irish and with the Jews.
