  1. One of my favorite swimming holes sometimes has a sign posted saying that the pool is closed due to the fecal count being too high. Which is sort of a reminder that, even when the fecal count is "acceptable," we are still swimming in feces.
  2. The saying is designed for whuffos, not for people like us with intimate knowledge of parachutes. So, in the company of whuffos, it's still a good saying for some circumstances. I also find the second part to be nonsensical, since a "closed" mind does still function. I mean, even a close-minded whuffo can probably still balance a checkbook.
  3. Ah, memories. The first time I ever drank whiskey was with the guitar player from that band. And I did fall in love, but it wasn't with him.
  4. You're making it sound as if all "nice guys" are total morons. If they're choosing to date women who treat them like crap, then aren't they just like the women who apparently got all this baggage from dating "tools"?
  5. I don't buy this. I think you can be nice without letting people take advantage of you. There is a difference between being nice and being a sucker. Sure, give someone the benefit of the doubt maybe once or twice, but if they abuse this trust, don't trust them again - this is not mean, it's common sense. It has been my experience that the people who think of themselves as a "nice person," while going around complaining about how "nice people always finish last," they are usually at least as much of an asshole as the next person.
  6. I got a good laugh on one of the other headlines on that page: "Open-Minded Man Grimly Realizes How Much Life He's Wasted Listening To Bullshit." Kinda how I've been feeling lately.
  7. That was easy, seeing as I have no soul. Now who are the Yankees?
  8. If they're both "perfect" candidates, then the degree seems irrelevant.
  9. It would make her less desirable to some guys, but apparently it did not make her less desirable to the right guy for her. A person's job, hobbies, sex drive, kinks, etc. all contribute to the persons's personality and therefore to how desirable they are to someone else. What one person may find undesirable, another may find desirable. Such is life.
  10. You do know at least one person who hates men and wants female supremacy. But then I've never considered myself a feminist.

Ain't there anyone here for love?
  12. Hmm... probably NIN's Closer. (Sorry, crappy version, but hey you get what you pay for. ;)
  13. I don't think my marriage/divorce had much effect on my financial condition either way. But we had no kids or joint property, and we kept all of our finances separate.
  14. If that's all you choose to argue with, then yes, that's all you've got. But I think we'll just have to disagree there. I've already argued in other ways. That quote is saying that we dont have stuff made by aliens to argue with. OK, sorry, I guess we're miscommunicating. What I meant was, most of the stuff in our world (people, oceans, air, planets, etc., etc., etc.) was not made by us. But if you choose to discount all of that other stuff (which is basically everything, compared to what we have made), then all you'll have to argue with is stuff made by man. And that's where I don't agree, but so be it.
  15. There are consequences (here in this world) for all actions. Do I need to explain that? And yes, to do those things would matter.
  16. If that's all you choose to argue with, then yes, that's all you've got. But I think we'll just have to disagree there.
  17. This sounds like you're saying that Christians only argue for benevolent reasons, and that any atheist who would argue back is simply selfish. Are we just supposed to sit there and listen while people use illogical arguments to try to convert us? (And, of course, proselytizing is not exactly the worst thing to ever come from religion.) I have never believed in God, but I can assure you that there have always been consequences for my actions. My atheism does not mean that I am free to "live a life of chaos and not have any repercussions."
  18. To me, the problem with your argument is that you seem to be saying that "everything" in our world has a designer. And by "everything," you mean everything designed by man, which is such a tiny and insignificant amount of "stuff" compared with everything else that exists (that we are aware of, and then some). But you're grouping ALL of that other stuff into this one "thing" (the universe) and saying that since "everything" requires a designer, then this _one_ other thing (the universe) also requires a designer. So I think one of the main errors in your argument (in my opinion) is the amount of significance you're giving to the stuff designed by man.
  19. The Bible was written by man. Writing something down does not make it true. Well, we don't know that. So we don't know that everything that we see and use was created by some other being. Therefore, we don't know that there is a "creator." Well, I will agree that the skies are pretty damn cool.
  20. "The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven."
  21. Who created the oceans, the dirt, the distant planets and solar systems? There are a lot of things that we see and use that have no known creator. I don't think that the fact that they are complicated, working objects means that they must have a designer/creator. To me, that's where the "that's just the way it is" fails. But again, the idea of "God" seems to be very similar to my "I don't know."
  22. If God is defined as something outside of our laws/rules/whatever, then I don't think it can have much to do with science as we know it. With that definition, science can't prove it one way or the other. Unless you were saying earlier that science may one day be able to explain God? (And possibly then go on to explain what, if anything, created God?) In which case I would agree that, if some sort of "God" does exist, it is somehow knowable. That is why I consider myself an atheist rather than an agnostic.
  23. See, to me, that's what the argument for a creator comes down to: "That's just how it is." Which has never worked for me. And you're comfortable with comparing the most beautiful, complex, and vast thing in our world to beer and skydiving magazines? I'm not trying to win you over to my way of thinking. Just always trying to understand and figure out how to live comfortably in a world where most people seem to believe differently than I do. And, after all, it's all "belief" and not "fact," either way. It's helpful for me to see "God" as a metaphor, though I'm still trying to figure out the proper translation for it. Perhaps something along the lines of "all that cannot be understood/explained."
