  1. I've read a lot of the Bible, a little of the Koran. I haven't yet watched the videos you linked, but I'm curious what you were surprised by that can be found in each?
  2. I'm thinking it means she's so ugly that, not only will men not buy drinks for her, but also the bartender will ignore her even if she's waving money around. As for dating nerds, how does one even define a nerd these days? It used to mean someone who was all in to science and/or technology, but nowadays it's "cool" to be in to those things. (Well, at least it seems that way, but I'm not exactly an authority on what is cool.)
  3. I've always heard this as the two wolves being good and evil. I suppose the word "God" can be substituted for "good," if it is a word that has more meaning to you. Though I'm thinking the Cherokee would refer to "Great Spirit" rather than "God," but perhaps they mean the same thing when translated from their language. I've also heard the same idea as having a good seed and a bad seed, and each one can only grow if watered. I like the idea, and it works whether one believes in a god or not.
  4. My first thought was The Who's Live at Leeds, but no, I think it has to be the Nirvana Unplugged album. Man, I love that album.
  5. In Texas, it was required to renew our inspection sticker once a year by having these things tested. I have found it odd that California has no such requirement. I guess they probably stop people for non-working lights or other obvious issues... (Not complaining - I'm perfectly happy to check these things on my own rather than having to waste time and money on a yearly inspection.)
  6. I just noticed that my town's Easter egg hunt is called "Spring EGGstravaganza," with no mention of "Easter" on the ad. I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't recently read this thread, and I don't really care, but I'm sort of surprised since I live in a highly Christian area.
  7. It was probably on cable. I also rented it and watched it again a few years later. Now that I see it's on Netflix Instant Watch, maybe I'll watch it again. Well, I don't think it was that particular scene that made me remember him, but..... I guess I just have a thing for creepy guys. Oh, and as for the song "Singin' in the Rain," I've seen that musical so many times (one of my favorite movies), that it'll probably always bring up visions of Gene Kelly for me rather than A Clockwork Orange.
  8. I just happened to watch it on TV when I was a teenager (20+ years ago), having never even heard of it, so it was a real WTF??? at that time, and it really stuck in my mind. (And I had a crush on Malcolm McDowell for a while after that. ) If I saw it for the first time today, I'm guessing the shock value would be a lot lower, so I don't know if I would like it as much. I did later read the book, which I enjoyed more than the movie. Though I read somewhere that the last chapter or so was removed from the book before being distributed in America (with the "American" version being what the movie was based on). Apparently the original version was not violent enough for us Americans, or something like that.
  9. Oh, I thought it was perfectly vitriolic, in an underhanded sort of way. As for me, I used up all of my intelligent thought with my "canopy size vs. penis size" thread. Since then, I got nuthin'.
  10. Oh, yeah, I did finally watch that. Good movie.
  11. My guess is that no one on that site is particularly looking for a long-term relationship. But I think it's a great idea. Not that I would want to participate . . .
  12. I'm going to assume that the only reason you're replying to me with this rant is that I was the last person who posted. Otherwise, it makes no sense in reply to anything that I have posted.
  13. OK, I didn't read every single post, but I got the impression from this thread that most county courts do not have the same attire requirement that yours does.(?) As I mentioned, my requirement was "no shorts," and I had no trouble complying with that. Though I'll admit that, had it been more specific as yours was, I would have made an effort to comply with that as well.
  14. "Taking his name" is perhaps a symbol for some deeper value that is highly important to him in a marriage. So my guess would be that the "deal breaker" had more to do with something deeper, and maybe her choosing to take his name is part of her acknowledgment in their shared values. There is nothing wrong with a man expecting a woman to take his name, as long as he is marrying a woman who expects to take his name.
  15. I rented 12 Angry Men to find out what I should wear to court. And I discovered that, as a juror, I should be a white man in a suit. And, well . . . Hey, at least I got the "white" part right.

    Crash

I'm usually behind in seeing movies, so I'm bumping this old thread.... I just watched this movie last night, and I loved it. I didn't really know what it was going to be about, but I ended up being totally absorbed through the whole story. I was afraid that it might be depressing, but actually I found it to be more the opposite. And I know that racism was sort of the theme, but I found myself more focused on the portrayal of the general struggle with the human condition. Definitely a story that I'll keep thinking about for a while.
  17. In my county, the dress code is "no shorts." I served on a two-month trial and pretty much wore jeans the whole time, because that's what I own. Wardrobe aside, I found it to be an interesting experience. I didn't like some of the other jurors, and some of them probably didn't like me, but I think the idea was to have some diversity.
  18. No, I did not intend to take it in that direction. But again, "anger" is a broad term, and therefore lends itself to going off in various tangents.
  19. I use REBT/CBT techniques as self-help for managing anxiety, but I use it in combination with other things.
  20. Honestly? No. But I'll try reading it again when this stupid allergy medicine wears off, and maybe I'll get back to you.
  21. No. Just a strong interest in REBT because it has been very helpful to me.
  22. I have been able to identify many of my own irrational beliefs/thoughts. It sometimes takes a lot of effort to dispute these beliefs, but it is possible. And it has helped me a lot in reducing anxiety (which can sometimes be a form of internalized anger). Anyhow, I'm probably not the best at explaining it. If you're interested, look up REBT. (Though I'm guessing it's quite a bit different than the kind of counselling you're involved with. And different things work for different people.)
  23. It's a hypothetical scenario, with many possible variables, so I don't think this is a given. (Maybe the guy likes getting slapped, and finds quade attractive. Anger might not be his physiological response. )
  24. I think surprise would be the spontaneous response. Anger might follow, but I do think it is technically a choice. Emotions are probably more difficult to control in surprising, fast-paced situations. The idea is somewhat of an over-simplification, and "anger" is somewhat of a broad term. I was only responding to the idea that it should always be expressed and that it cannot be controlled.
  25. No. Look for evidence to support the belief, and then decide how rational it is.
