  1. I don't know. To me, the main focus seems to be "respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part," which includes humans and everything else. But that's probably just my perception because it's their one principle that I relate to the most. The rest of your post made me think of the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. And, I don't know much about it, but apparently there is a "New Tribalism" movement that seems to have started in response to his book. Probably just a bunch of smelly hippies.
  2. Yeah, I should not have called it silly - my bad. I just meant that the UU church is more focused on the general philosophy of living a good life. From Christianity, they seem to take the idea of loving thy neighbor, without getting hung up on whether the person Jesus actually existed and/or whether he was the son of God... stuff like that. (While that may not be the general idea for you, it does seem to be for some people and some churches.) And I suppose that was the first example of "details" that popped into my head because Christianity is the main religion I hear arguments about, given that I live in a largely Christian society.
  3. Apparently not... ? I spend practically zero time being hung up on who/what Jesus was. Edit: And to be clear, I meant within the church setting and their sermons. I'm guessing that individual UU's get hung up on various different things, as people do.
  4. I mean that seems great and all, but it just sounds like you'd have to over-compromise and put up with all types of peoples' crap with an insicere shit eating grin on your face all the time... I'd much rather live in harmony and still call eachother out on our bullshit...like Jesus, like family
  5. You might like the Unitarian Universalists. They're a pretty open-minded religious(?) community, which seems to have a focus on living in harmony with each other and our environment. Atheists, agnostics, and believers are all welcome.

And I've never met any skydivers who had a few screws loose. Sanest people I've ever met.
  7. I guess that would depend on whether he was acting like a fucking dick when he revealed himself.... I mean, if he caused me to spill hot coffee in my lap or something...

Yes! Of course! Why else would you have it? Well, some people jump with a reserve only because the dz requires it.
  9. Funny, two days ago, I was thinking of dropping Netflix. Now I'm thinking about increasing my service. After looking at alternatives, looking at the various plans Netflix offers, and reading your post, I'm thinking... well, if we're going to pay $16 for one dvd plus streaming, it's not that much more to pay $20 for two dvd's plus streaming. Most of the tv shows I'd like to watch (Californication, Breaking Bad) only seem to be on dvd, so I never get them because I'd rather get a movie. But if I could just have the tv show disc here to watch when I feel like it, that would be much better. Hmm, was this part of their sneaky plan?
  10. Atheists know everything? Cool, I didn't know that I know everything. Thanks for letting me know.
  11. Ah, but you see, in many states they have "common law marriages". After a couple has lived together with each other for a certain number of years, the state considers them to be married, even though the couple themselves do not. So even though they follow your advice and choose not to get one, the state gives them one anyway. So don't live together in a state that has common law marriages. Edit: After reading a bit about this, it sounds like the couple has to present themselves as being married in order for a common law marriage to exist, so I don't think it's true that the government just gives them one when they don't want one.
  12. In the U.S., the government's been involved in marriage since before we were even a country. Why do you want to go redefining marriage?
  13. I expect to see you in the news soon, floating down the Rio Grande in your canoe. Gun in one hand, and a "Legalize Polygamy" sign in the other hand. I guess you'll need a couple of women (or men ;) in there to paddle for you. (You might need to get a bigger canoe.) Sorry, I'm feeling silly right now. And I have no problem with polygamy, as long as it is between consenting adults. The legal aspects might be a little different than two-person (same-sex or opposite-sex) marriage, since you're now dealing with more than two people, but I'm sure that could be worked out.
  14. Yeah, you're probably right. And I see that it has been proposed many times before. I've just been seeing it a lot lately in our local news, since the guy proposing it is from my area.
  15. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2011/07/south-california-proposed-as-51st-state-by-republican-supervisor.html I'm not real thrilled about this, but hopefully it won't get too far.
  16. I actually read books and watch movies (though not at the same time). I know it's wild, but I get around like that.
  17. Going to the cinema just once a month would cost more than the Netflix subscription. And we watch our movies with a projector on a very large screen, so it feels like being at a small cinema anyway, but with cheaper snacks. But we do occasionally go to the cinema... Right now, Netflix is the only thing we have, aside from free stuff (like hulu) on the Internet. We gave up cable a few years ago when our TV quit working (decided not to replace it). After looking around, we'll probably just keep Netflix. So far I'm not liking the selection on Redbox or Amazon Prime.
  18. I didn't know they had any rates that high. What all does that include???
  19. I was wondering about the Redbox. I've seen lots of those around here, but I've never looked at their selection. And AggieDave: Thanks, I'll check out the Amazon Prime. I buy stuff from Amazon a lot anyway, and we have a Roku too, so that might be good.
  20. Do they have a single monthly fee now, or is it sill something like $4 per rental? And what is CC?
  21. I probably use the instant watch most, but I like getting dvd's too because it's a much better selection. And, of course, Netflix is responsible for all of the dvd rental places closing down around here.... bastards! (OK, I guess I had a part in that too. )
  22. I got an email from Netflix today, saying that they are increasing the price of my plan from $10 to $16 a month. OK, that doesn't exactly break the bank, but that's a 60% price increase. And, as far as I can tell, I'm not getting anything new for it. I've been happy with their service, but I'm tempted to cancel my account on principle. Though, most likely, I'll just shut up and pay the $16. Anyhow, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good alternative to Netflix (similar type of service)? (Nothing that involves stealing content, please.)
