I have a buddy who, in college, decided he had too much to drink. So he decided to walk. The cop watching the parking lot decided to follow him and ticketed him for public intox. So he made the right choice, but there are so many ways for locals to collect public revenue, there's no win. I'd say a ticket for public intoxication is #WINNING over going to jail (or worse) for drunk driving. So yes, he did make a good choice. An even better choice might have been to not have too much to drink while out in public. (I think there are actual reasons for public intoxication laws, though I can't tell from this anecdote if your buddy's behavior warranted a ticket or not.)

Wow, that was a good movie! You're right about the dialogue; it did stand out. It added a bit of unrealisticness (is that a word?) to the movie, but it upped the entertainment value by quite a bit. I also enjoyed the cinematography (particularly the regatta scene) and the sound. Trent Reznor was an interesting choice for the music - went well with the sort of dark tone of the film. And now I have this strange desire to go delete my facebook account . . .

??? I believe drunk-driving deaths and injuries have decreased significantly as the drunk-driving penalties and prevention measures have increased.

I think that one of the areas that hit Big Tobacco the hardest was the regulations on advertising, combined with the negative ad campaign against smoking and the tobacco industry. I think this put a big dent in the public perception of smoking being "cool," and that's what needed to happen for use to drop. I just browsed through WHO's Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, and I don't see them recommending making alcohol more available. Their main suggestions seem to be reducing availability (but not to the point of increasing illicit production), increasing drunk-driving prevention measures (more random check points, etc.), increasing public awareness of the dangers of heavy drinking, and more regulations on alcohol marketing.
-
And why are cigarettes so expensive lately?
-
I doubt this. Looking at American tobacco culture, it seems that use has gone down as regulation has increased. I suspect the same would be true with alcohol.

You could contact Merriam-Webster and the other dictionary publishers to see if they'll re-define that for you. As for "marriage," most modern dictionaries already include same-sex marriage as part of the definition. Words change, although same-sex marriage is not a new thing.

I'll be celebrating it by not drinking.

Why is beating others over the head so attractive?
Shotgun replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
The key is to purge after the binge. And I think you might be insulting the word "debate." -
Hard to know what two people are thinking about when they're kissing... If they were married, then they were probably just thinking about what color to paint the garage.
-
I think this may be part of the problem. I get the impression that some people are equating "same-sex marriage" with "anal sex."
-
That is contradictory. If there is nothing wrong with it, then what is the problem with it being called marriage, which is what it is? And he called it "disgusting," which doesn't come across as "nothing wrong with it" to me. I like cats and dogs, but calling a dog "cat" doesn't make it one. And calling an opposite-sex marriage a same-sex marriage doesn't make it one. But it's still a marriage. Just like dogs and cats are still both animals, mammals, carnivorans, etc.

Satisfaction with your life is a direct result of the choices you make
Shotgun replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
I think that satisfaction is largely a result of the choices that we make, but not completely. We are all presented with different challenges that are often beyond our control. Plus, I suspect that people may be genetically pre-disposed to be more or less "satisfied" than others, though I guess that falls under challenges beyond our control. And when I say "beyond our control," I mean challenges that we did not choose, but not necessarily challenges that cannot be overcome. -
And those people are free to keep their marriages between a man and a woman. Someone else's marriage should have no effect on that. (Back to your original question.) I'm sure there were many divorces finalized in the U.S. today, but that has had zero effect on my own marriage. There are people out cheating on their spouses today; this also has zero effect on my marriage. I just don't buy the "protecting the sanctity of marriage" argument. Serial monogamy is quickly becoming the most common form of marriage in the Western world (if it isn't already???). Hardly a sacred institution. Marriage gives couples certain legal rights, and the easiest way to extend those rights to same-sex couples is to allow them to have legal marriages. All of this "civil union"/"domestic partnership" stuff just makes things unnecessarily complicated, and so far doesn't extend all of the same rights of legal marriage to those couples.
-
No, but it sounded like you were saying that it shouldn't be used by couples whose lifestyles you find to be disgusting.(??) Although, re-reading what you wrote, you said, "referring to an action that I find disgusting as being marriage is an insult . . ." What is the action that you find disgusting?
-
I believe they are simply referred to as "men." And to the OP, if I was dating younger men, I would not be offended by being called a cougar. I don't think it's usually meant as an insult.
-
Thanks... Yeah, I hadn't heard of a final club either.
-
I should have this movie in the mail today. I have to admit that I only ordered it because I wanted to see Justin Timberlake. I would totally turn cougar for him. But, after reading quade's review, now I'm expecting to be entertained with an actual good movie too. As for how factual it is, I usually assume even "true story" movies have added and subtracted things for entertainment value.

The word "marriage" is legally used by people such as myself who have no intention of raising a family. I have also been divorced and re-married, and some people have been married many times. And there are probably many opposite-sex married couples who have lifestyles that you or someone else may find disgusting. Yes, the word "marriage" is already used, but not necessarily by people who have the same reverence for the word that you have.
-
It just does. But thank God we've got good old-fashioned straight people like Charlie Sheen to protect the sanctity of marriage.
-
If you liked "Amelie," you might like another movie called "Delicatessen," from the same director. I liked "Delicatessen" more, maybe because it's a bit darker. But they are both fun movies.

I believe the idea is to make the roads safer for even those who don't drink. Not a particularly good idea though, especially with the current technology.

I got a 55. I felt somewhat silly for missing the Empire State Building as representing King Kong, seeing as I was sitting at my desk with a King Kong (poised on top of the E.S.B.) poster on the wall. And it's one of my favorite movies.

I am always curious to see the tobacco industry treated this way, while the alcohol industry is not. And, while I would like to see both products fall out of favor, I struggle with the issue of the government deciding what can be advertised and what cannot.
