  1. >Giving Jared Loughner more guns would have remedied the situation? From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any reasonable changes that could be made to the gun laws that would have prevented the Loughner incident. Sounds like he demonstrated some bizarre behavior, but nothing that necessarily should have put him in a database to prevent him from buying a gun.
  2. I'm not seeing anything too insane about that. Popular media has people in lingerie with guns all the time. (OK, mostly women, but I don't see much difference.)
  3. I am under the impression that the photos were turned over after the murders, once the investigation began. Actually, I just re-read one of the articles about this, and it says that he dropped off the roll of film and then later picked it up. So, if the police got the photos from Walgreens, then that implies that Walgreens had kept a copy of them. (Which would be somewhat unethical, but not particularly surprising. However, it's unclear if that is what happened.???)

  5. Not replying to anyone in particular, but this seems relevant to the thread: http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/08599204144800
  6. I don't think that being a "gun enthusiast" or even a "gun expert" necessarily makes one have above-average understanding of the gun violence problem. I think that is more of a psychological/sociological/cultural problem. Similar to the alcohol-related violence (including drunk driving) problem; I don't think I'd look to "alcohol enthusiasts" alone for the cure. (And similar in that an outright ban would probably greatly reduce the incidence of violence, while also greatly infringing on the rights of others.)
  7. The rest of that story: Emphasis mine, and perhaps the main point in this story. Anyhow, when I donate toys to a toy drive, I try to pick pretty "neutral" things. And even a heathen like me knows that there is controversy around Harry Potter and Twilight, so I probably wouldn't choose those toys. Or toy guns. (Unless requested. The toy drive that we usually give to is local and a little more personal, where the kids/parents do get to make requests.)
  8. Yes, and so I believe that God "exists" in this sense. The belief in God can help (or hurt) people, and therefore "God" can have power through this belief. Oh, and no, I haven't read that book, but it sounds interesting.
  9. Ditto. And I am an atheist. Thanks. And the same to you.
  10. Well, that's what you see. I see it as that there is still mysterious and cool stuff to find out about, but no reason to believe that it is "the handiwork of the Divine Creator." Perhaps some people just feel more comfortable with "the mysteries of God" over "the mysteries of life." Perhaps it is all really a semantics argument.

    AA Logo?

Oh, American Airlines. I thought you were talking about this AA logo (attached): (But no, I'm not getting anything other than the dz logo on my page tab.)
  12. True enough, but as you can see by the responses, it is a case where art imitates life. I don't see much in the responses in this thread to support that statement. Anyhow, if I judged by posts on dropzone.com, I'd guess that neither atheists nor Christians are very happy people. Or at least on here, both sides often sound like they spend a good deal of the time being pissed off about the other side.
  13. No, that's just the prerequisite for becoming a stand-up comedian.
  14. I'm thinking that something which eats only grass would be vegan, not vegetarian???
  15. I will occasionally read an entry in a blog if it comes up in a search or if someone posts a link, but I don't have any that I've subscribed to or that I check regularly.

    Point Break

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I thought that there was some real skydiving in it??? Or at least some real parachutes landing??? Can't really remember; mostly I remember the opening scene of Raquel packing her rig.

    Point Break

Like, what kind of subject? Stalkers, for example.

    Point Break

I find that when I watch movies that are about any subject that I have more than average experience with, they usually come across as unrealistic. But yeah, they're just movies, and often entertaining anyway.

That's so yesterday. Now rehab is the new black. I thought it was the new Gay. Hey, I was just repeating what I read on a t-shirt the other day.

  21. Just curious (from the thread drift in here)... As private property owners who can restrict firearms from their property, would private colleges also be held responsible for the large amount of underage (illegal) drinking that takes place on their property?
  22. but....., if you were on campus, you'd be drunk too - it just happens As many times as I've been on a college campus, and as many times as I've been drunk, I've somehow managed to never be drunk on a college campus. And somehow I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything as far as that goes.
  23. Reading this thread, it sounds like something should be done about the problem of binge drinking on campus. I'd want to carry a gun too if I had to be around drunk frat boys all the time.
