Thanks, I'll probably check that out (eventually!)... I guess, by the definitions you put forth, I am a "materialist"... I do believe that the brain and the mind are the same thing. And I believe that the brain itself can cause physical changes to take place within the brain... which sort of matches up with the "dualist" way of thinking... except that I still think that the brain and the mind are pretty much one and the same. (The "mind" just seems to be that "conscious-thought" part of the brain.)

That's funny. It could have been a LoveSac store, or maybe it is someone's nickname. We have a couple of the LoveSac beanbag things. I was half-drunk one night, standing on the second-story ledge that overlooks our living room, about to jump down onto one of the LoveSacs, but I decided not to jump (thinking this is one of those funny drunk things that might turn out to be not so funny in a few seconds)... Then about a week later I was at the dz and saw Larry with a cast on his leg. Assuming he hurt himself skydiving, I asked what happened. Apparently he had been jumping from the second story at someone's house into a LoveSac.

I'm using Cingular too, and so far I'm very happy with the service... But then I really don't use my phone very much.

Cool, I love Willie! Have fun, and have a Happy Birthday!

I just looked that up on Amazon. It sounds interesting, though the Amazon readers didn't give it very good reviews (not that that always means anything). I think I'll add that to my list of books to read. (Hmm, I need to make more time for reading, because that list is getting too long to keep up with! And I read slow.......) You might like one of the books I'm reading right now, which I mentioned earlier in this thread... It's called "The Astonishing Hypothesis: The Scientific Search for the Soul" by Francis Crick. The title isn't really fitting because he's not so much searching for the soul but rather setting out to prove that no such thing exists. I'm not very far into it yet, so I can't say how good it is, but it's interesting so far. His "amazing hypothesis" is that we are nothing more than a complex collection of neurons... and he spends a little too much time going on about how "amazing" his hypothesis is (as if no one else would have ever had this same thought), but other than that I think he offers a lot of insight into how the brains works (mostly focusing on the neurobiology of vision). But of course, this book was published in 1994 so there are probably better books on the subject now. I was interested in this one mostly because I wanted to hear what Crick had to say on the subject.

No, I haven't. Sounds like it might be a little too adventurous for me.

I prefer Rocky Road myself, which I suppose is a variation on plain chocolate. But what does chocolate or vanilla have to do with whether someone was _legally_ raped or not (without any type of consent)?

yea its been known to happen... meet a girl in a bar, start talking to her, some other guy overhears part of the conversation and chimes in with "yea?well I....." Hmm, I don't think I've ever had a guy hit on me by coming up to me in a bar and start telling me what kind of kinky stuff he's into... But now that I think about it, that might get my attention. I like people who just get to the point... At least that would be more interesting than the standard "So, do you come here often?" line.

I have several books that I am sort of half-reading right now (but most of my time goes to reading school books); "The Astonishing Hypothesis" by Francis Crick "Memnoch The Devil" by Anne Rice "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand "Gorilla Monsoon" by John Long And last night I was thumbing through Anne Rice's "Exit to Eden" but I don't think I'll start reading it yet since I already have four other books to finish.

Yep, aren't they beautiful?

I think you've got the right cat... They're bred with Asian Leopard Cats (about three generations down). They do act a lot like dogs. She was very good at playing fetch, and I used to take her for walks on the nature trail behind my home. And yes, she was a little bit too good of a hunter; since she had a pet door, I would often return home to find animal parts all over the floor (I'm now an expert at removing bloodstains from carpet).

Hey, my cat used to get in the shower with me, and I didn't think I was being kinky. But then she was a Bengal cat and they like water, so I didn't get the "cat trying to reach higher ground" effect that non-water-loving cats might produce. So... Do you have a lot of "I'm kinkier than you" discussions?

Well you were wrong, Frenchy... There's no hope... No hope..... What's this crazy shit they're playing now??? I like it...
-
Ok, I'm listening to the simulcast on the website now... they're playing some sort of dance mix of the Doors' Roadhouse Blues... nice.

That website is hilarious. And yes, Dave, the history behind it is interesting. Good "discussing around the bonfire" material. I always wanted one of those liquor dispenser thingies with the pissing boy on it.

You mean the Manneken Pis? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis
-
I would say yes, but that would probably mean no. So who knows... The thought of seeing two silly Frenchmen on leashes is awfully tempting though. Now if you promise there will be naked monkeys there too.......
-
I see... Something tells me that YOU might be the one to end up on a leash.
-
And it sounds like there might be another Gang up on Remster Day this Saturday.
-
I smell fear... Hmm, it sounds like you may need assistance in getting the leash on him.

And do you read their email? I think I would prefer some anonymous person at Yahoo having access to my email account than one of my family members. Not that I think any of them would read my email, but I just wouldn't be comfortable with it... They might accidentally find out things that they don't want to know about.

very well written opinion piece against intelligent design
Shotgun replied to jdfreefly's topic in Speakers Corner
For this intelligent designer to create such a complex and perfect(?) universe, the intelligent designer would have to be pretty complex itself... So where did the intelligent designer come from? It has always been interesting to me that a lot of people seem to need an answer for where WE came from, but are perfectly content not knowing where "God" came from. ("God just is," seems to be the common answer to that question.) (I put a ? next to the "perfect" in that quote because I personally don't think of the universe as being "perfect".) -
All I can say is "What pic???"
