  1. Alcohol and cocaine can both be used in moderation, but they both have the potential to be addictive. The main difference is that one is a legal depressant and the other is an illegal stimulant. They are both mood-altering drugs, different effects but similar potencies. Saying that cocaine is to alcohol as nuclear weapons are to handguns doesn't seem like a very accurate analogy to me.
  2. Do you ever drink alcohol?
  3. Just curious... Do you use alcohol?
  4. You have FOUR chocolate-giving cats? May I adopt one or two, please? Oops, I lied... Actually only three of them gave me chocolates, and the fourth gave me butterscotch candies. And one of them peed on the carpet the other day; you can have him. Oh wait, he's also the one who gave me chocolate-covered raisins (my favorite), so I guess you can't have him.
  5. I got chocolates from three different men, and from all four of my cats too.
  6. Well, I've been working on making my liver a little bit prettier. Does that count?
  7. Mine must not be too memorable, because I had to look at my logbook... Apparently I did a solo, cannonball exit out of the T-Bo. I also wrote that I was in a bad mood and that I landed badly and bruised my knees. But jump #101 (on the same day) says that it was my first french-kiss-pass, so I guess my mood must have improved by then. (I do remember that jump, and I remember getting a pie in the face for doing my 100th.)
  8. "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. (And a bunch of school books.)
  9. Hmm, maybe I should learn to keep my mouth shut.
  10. Funny you should mention that; I happen to be in the market for a good three hole punch right now. As for the most memorable thread, I guess it's this one, because I can't seem to remember any other threads at the moment.
  11. You're not a moderator anymore, Remi, so you really don't have to click on the naked man threads unless you just want to. Now quit your whining.
  12. I tend to think of that type of career requiring a certain workaholic/overachiever mentality. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would imagine that such a mentality could take a toll on one's personal life. It is a sad story, but we hear this sort of stuff all the time. The fact that she is an astronaut doesn't make it any more shocking or sad to me. She's just a human like the rest of us, and humans do some crazy shit sometimes.
  13. Hmm... Note to Self: Do not get involved in a love triangle with quade.
  14. Come on, Remi, post some pics! I don't have any leather pants, but I do have some rubber pants. I'd post some pics, but unfortunately I don't know how to use a camera.
  15. Perhaps she lied when they asked her whether she would ever consider driving across the country wearing a diaper to kidnap her lover's girlfriend. But seriously, it's pretty hard to predict what people might do in the future. I know that Buzz Aldrin was hospitalized for depression shortly after his moonwalk, and he was later treated for alcoholism. If he had been in that condition when he applied to the space program, he wouldn't have been accepted. So obviously he passed NASA's screening process, but people change...
  16. I call my boy cats "fuzznuggets" sometimes (along with a lot of other names). We seem to have accidentally adopted a fourth cat as of last weekend - a cute little black kitten, similar to the one your friends have. He was hiding on top of the fuel pan on my pickup, luckily making a lot of noise so that I didn't drive off with him there. We haven't found his humans, and he seems to be making himself at home with us. I didn't really want another cat, but it's fun having a baby around, and we're getting attached to him. Anyhow, we definitely can't take another kitten, but I hope you can find a good home for him.
  17. I hope it's an early spring. This cold weather in SoCal is starting to piss me off. I'm starting to think I need to buy a coat or something. (And in a few months, I'll be whining about how freakin' hot it is out here. ;) Oh, and Phil's little home is cute...
  18. Who knows... but I'm sure that a lot more people have now heard of "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" thanks to the little bomb scare.
  19. When I took an introductory chemistry class, my book mentioned the Bush administration's lack of attention to global warming. And most of my science books have mentioned bioethical concerns and such, and with issues such as stem cell research, this gets into politics. So I think that science and politics have to be concerned with each other to some extent.
  20. I don't mind labels if they fit. And, by the dictionary definition, "atheist" would be the most fitting label for me. But a lot of people read way too much into that word, so I've mostly stopped referring to myself as an atheist. And no, "none of the above" is not agnostic; if it were then I would just say "agnostic."
  21. I think that he is a guy who changed his beliefs - happens all the time, doesn't really affect my beliefs. But technically I shouldn't be answering the question, since I am no longer an atheist (now a "none-of-the-above").
  22. Not a caption, but... Is that you in the blue outfit???
  23. It doesn't seem very appropriate to be posting private email conversations on a public forum.
  24. Doesn't sound like he was teaching politics - just stating a controversial opinion, as many tenured professors do. And Michele, I'd say your best bet is to ignore it and focus on the subject. Teach yourself and find other resources if the professor is unhelpful. Unless you want to get into an effort to change the tenure system - which might be a good thing - but I am personally more interested in getting my degree and moving on. Learning to deal with the system and difficult professors just seems to be a part of the educational experience.
  25. This is just my non-expert guess, but I would imagine that some people do feel a crash after getting a skydiving "high"... probably depends on the person and the situation - how their body reacts to adrenaline and such, and whether they are prone to mood disorders. But yeah, it's interesting how the two are similar.
