Flying is an incredible gift and a privilage. But it's not cheap. When you factor in training material, equipment, airplane rental and instructors time it will tally into the thousands and thousands of dollars. Even more if you are going to pursue a career in aviation. It is also a lot harder to become a licensed pilot than it is to become a skydiver. I don't want to discourage you or anything (because flying is awesome), but you need to know what you're getting into. Steve Private Pilot, SEL + mountain and high performance checkouts. Don't be getting yourself into any trouble in that troubled part of the world as we all want to see you again at next year's Eloy x-mas boogie.

Peace be with you my child.

A few weeks ago we couldn't keep Holly quiet. But I haven't seen her post here in a while. So what's up FreeFlyHol? Why so quiet? Are you around? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Well I managed to do 17 jumps in January far below what I would have liked to do had the weather cooperated more and had I not had to be working on some weekend days. But considering I live in Colorado, 17 jumps isn't too bad for January (especially since the DZs are only open on weekends at this time of year). I like the idea of trying to make 20-40 jumps per month, as a 200+ jump year is pretty good for someone who works in the Whuffo world. So here are some of my goals for the coming months. 1) Have fun skydiving and manage to not hurt or kill myself. 2) Become a better canopy pilot than what I am today. 3) Become a better freeflier than what I am today. 4) Get my 200 jumps in before September 2003 to obtain my "D" License (which shouldn't be a problem since I'm only 48 jumps include my two night jumps away from that goal). 5) Attend the WFFC in Rantoul. 6) Visit some other kick ass DZs, like Perris. 7) Attend the Lost Praire and Couch Freaks boogies. 8) And how can I forget, attend the Eloy 2003 x-mas boogie. 9) Maybe meet a skygoddess who will set me straight. everything else will just be gravy ... Recently Hooknswoop (my rigger) discovered something wrong with my container. Now the issue could have been resolved one way, but it wasn't. Instead, Sunrise is building me a new container and it should be ready before the end of the month. In the mean time I will jump the current container and ship it back to them once the new one arrives no questions asked. Now how's that for customer service? PM me if you want to know the details. I just saw Gordo post in his own incidents forum, so more good vibes are needed to be sent out. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

What are you thoughts on Videos?

Hey if you're willing to pay for the shipping costs, I'd likely be willing to give you my copy of "Pack like a Pro" as I doubt I need that video any more. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Cool friends ... can you have them send me $20 for a jump? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I have "Pack like a Pro" as well as "Fly like a Pro". and they proved to be valuable in my early days in the sport. But I don't get as much from them now. But one video that I would recommend for new commers is "Break-away". It's a video about emergency prodecures and it's good to review every once in a while. They pretty much show you all of the bad things that can happen and recommend ways to save yourself. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
I saw Betsy post in the incidents forum that Air Gordo was injured this weekend and I wanted to send out good vibes for him, but I thought that the incidents forum wasn't the place. For those of us fortunate enough to have met Gordo (I met him at the Eloy x-mas boogie this year), you'd know what a great guy he is and for those who haven't met him, trust us when we say he's a class act. So please join me in sending him out some good get well vibes ...

0:2:0 I was able to get two jumps in on Saturday before the winds kicked up and the snow started to fly. I hope next weekend is better. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

LOL ... I never had problems confusing the yoke's movements concerning the elevator's control, but the rudder and it's associated pedals were another story in the early days of my flight training. Also, primary flight students are taught to control rate of descent with power, and their air speed with pitch. As more experienced pilots we know that the glide path and airspeed can be controlled with a combination of the two, but to simplify things primary students are taught one way (or at least I was). Duece Is Perris only 4-5 hours from Eloy? Hmmm ... maybe I could drive there for this boogie in May. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Tom I was in your exact position not all that long ago (six months ago) and asking the same questions. Is skydiving something I really want to do? I think you've already received some good feedback so I'm not going to try and reiterate what's already been said. But I just wanted you to know that skydiving has had a profoundly positive impact on my life. Am I taking risks in this sport? Sure I am, but I risk my life every day when I drive my car, ride a motorcycle, ride a bike, ski, rock climb, mountaineer, etc, etc, etc. Now there are many people out there who only do one tandem and are happy. There are many people who are happy only doing a few AFF jumps. There are many people who get through their AFF but then don't go on to become licensed. And there are those of us who love this sport so much that we become licensed, dedicated and make new (hopefully) life long friends in the sport. I personally am in it for the long haul. By the way, your profile says you're in Boulder (as does mine, check it out). Are you doing you first jump course at Mile-Hi? If yes, your first jump AFF instructors are more qualified to answer your specific skydiving questions than I am, but I will be at Mile-Hi jumping this weekend. So if you should see me (and recognize me from my DZ.COM mug shot), say hi. To me making friends in this sport really helps you feel apart of the community and sport. Not only did I get the pleasure of meeting AggieDave at Eloy, but I got to do several fun free fly jumps with him (including one where I prematurely pulled him out of the airplane before the count was done, and all he could say was "it's all fun").

AggieDave is one cool dude. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

So if one was to fly into CA to jump at Perris, which commercial airport would one want to arrive at? I'd love to just rent a plane and fly from Jeffco (my home airport) to Perris Valley's airport, but that would be too darn expensive. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
