CBC view on political divisiveness in US media
CanuckInUSA replied to SkyDekker's topic in Speakers Corner
That is one of the main issues with Fox News though, even when caught making mistakes, or just plain making things up, they won't run correctioin notices. That's not true. O'Reilly ran a slight correction notice last week the day after he slammed CA's medical weed laws. He is an opinionated yank (like there is not shortage of those). But he is not a stupid person. He just does what he needs to do to sell his TV show to his viewers. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
CBC view on political divisiveness in US media
CanuckInUSA replied to SkyDekker's topic in Speakers Corner
Why do you respect him? Every once in a while he says the right thing and he's not a stupid person. He's still a hard core conservative. But you've also got to understand that (at least economically) I too am a conservative. It's when the religious get involved in politics to push their morals on the rest of society that I say "woo ... hold on a second there". You may or may not understand me here. We're all different. CBC view on political divisiveness in US media

Every citizen of Canada feeds the CBC regardless of whether or not they like them. But there is no secret that Ontario and Quebec control the polical destiny of Canada and all other provinces are powerless. On a footnote, I'm not a big fan of Fox News and their bias reporting (even though they claim otherwise). But you have to admit that their programming is a whole lot more entertaining than the other cable news networks. I often don't agree with him, but I respect Bill O'Reilly. On the other hand I love to hate Sean Hannity for his ultra conservative religious views. But then again Fox News is doing something right by having guys like Hannity and Combs since they bring a certain flair (albeit a trashy version) to their programming that the other cable news networks can't duplicate. I don't know if I'm making sense here though. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
A woman told me two nights ago that she would NOT want to go through what Terri went through. Why is it so hard for some of you "Pro-Lifers at all Cost" to believe that some of us aren't interested in living like this? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

CBC view on political divisiveness in US media

And now you understand one of the reasons why I left Canada back in '98. I got tired of how the Liberals of the East oppressed the people of the West for so many years. The CBC does occasionally produce some brilliant programming (and of course there was always Hockey Night in Canada before the strike). But they also have their own political agenda fueled by those who feed them in Ontario and Quebec. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
I observed the demise for 3 years and ultimate death of my father due to cancer recently. I wasn't all that close to the guy since he did divorce my mother soon after I was born back in '63 and he never really spent time with myself and my siblings when we were young. But he was still my father and I had relations with the man. My family was divided with my father's ordeal. Myself, my brothers and more importantly my father's common law wife (with their 3 young children) all agreed that we were relieved once my father passed away as he was finally relieved of his pain and suffering (the shit that man went through to live as long as he did was not humane IMHO). But my sister (who is Pro-Life at all Costs) was devastated in his death. I mean she was all upset that he couldn't hold on and live to see his 70th birthday 2 months away and did not go on to live through Easter. Live for what? More pain and suffering? What sort of life is that? The stories my father's common law wife told us of his final 6 months of life during his wake was enough to make me want to have pulled the plug on him. Anyway ... the "Pro-Lifers at all Cost" will never understand the "Right to Die" people (and visa versa). Living Wills and talking to our families are the only way to ensure crap like this never happen again. Oh and to make a point that not all "Pro-Lifers at all Cost" are right-wing in their politics, my sister is a staunch liberal socialist believing that the government has a responsibility to look after their citizens where I am more of the conservative (at least when it comes to economics). But she is way more religious than I am and that can explain her "Pro-Life at all Cost" position. But I still ask all you "Pro-Lifers at all Cost" why is it so hard to believe that Terri Shiavo would not have wanted to live as a vegetable for 15 years? What sort of life did she have and would have had if this event didn't take place. She was a vegetable with no chance of recovery. And why are the "Pro-Lifers at all Cost" so quick to judge Michael Shiavo for not want to have happiness in his life (in reference to his girlfriend and their children). The world would be a better place if people stopped judging how others live their lives and concentrate on their own lives. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I was on a date the other night (wow can you believe I actually got a date) and during part of this date, myself and this woman discussed the "Right to Die" topic and this girl told me that "she would not want to live like Terri has lived these last 15 years". So if i was to go on and become serious with this woman I've already had the conversation with her. Of course a Living Will is a must after this debacle, but why is it so hard for the "Pro Lifers at all Cost" to believe that the Shiavos didn't also have their conversation. I do agree that how they killed her (this whole starvation and dehydration business) seems wrong in a modern compassionate society. But all medical evidence is that Terri Shavio ceased to exist as many knew her back in 1990 with no chance at a meaningful recovery. And now she is finally at peace. Of course the religious and secular societal battles have only begun and don't be surprised if/when some nut case pops Michael Shiavo, Michael Shiavo's lawyer and judge Greer. Who is the "Warren Miller" of Skydiving?
CanuckInUSA replied to JoeG's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Mike's more of a big-way RW camera man type guy. If you're looking for jumping videos, then there are all different types out there (RW, Freeflying, Swooping, BASE, all of the above) that many gear shops can help you with. But there really is no Warren Miller individual in this sport. But I could be wrong. I still say it's Mike McGowan (sp?). -

Warren Miller is an old fart. So we'd have to think of an old fart in skydiving as well. How about Mike McGowan (sp?) Sorry Mike, if you're out there reading this. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
I totally agree with what you say about BASE training in the skydiving environment and am also on the same page with you in that a BASE off-heading is different than a skydiving canopy avoidance maneuver. But they do require similar reactions. And yes, while some of us will try and convert a few more skydivers into flying their rear risers, many many skydivers know little about canopy control. But we do differ in that I still fell that skydive currency can't hurt your BASE jumping. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
-
Not true. Granted if this does happen when the people skydiving did a piss poor job of tracking away from each other, but having to evade another canopy on a collison course immediately after opening is similar to having an off heading opening in BASE. Hey I'm still learning all about BASE jumping and have only started to scratch the surface. I personally feel that my currency in skydiving hasn't hurt my canopy control in BASE jumping and I do believe that my BASE jumping has brought some added awareness to my skydiving. There are plenty of BASE jumpers out there who are not interested in skydiving and that's fine. We're all different and BASE jumping means different things to each and every one of us. The important thing is to not trivialize what we are doing. We can die in both sports if we do stupid things. And once again I think both sports complement each other. I like the fact that I jump a canopy which is in the 300 square foot size range and at the same time jump a canopy that is 100 square feet. How can that not be a good thing when it comes to learning how to control your canopies? But that's just me. To each their own. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
-
Simply amazing that someone with 50 jumps (already swooping a Stiletto) is so proficient in their knowledge and experience that they can trivialize canopy control over packing some nylon into a container. I'm really looking forward to what else you can teach us about BASE jumping. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

My coaching was not cheap. But the information I recieved was priceless. I can't speak for how Scott Miller conducts his coaching program (including the pricing), but my coaching was cheaper when my coach stayed on the ground and videoed/critiqued my landings. But it got more expensive when I had to do high altitude hop n' pops with him. Of course you've got to do what you've got to do (including paying extra for your coaches slot) when the coach needs to be up there in the air with you. In the long run, the money is well spent. I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but my swooping has also improved dramatically since Mr Slaton explained a few things to me (plus another PSTer stopped by our DZ this last weekend and backed up a lot of the things that Jim was trying to teach me).
-
LOL ... my Dad is bigger than your Dad. Sooner or later we're going to have to stop all of this. You're absolutely right that until I've received some coaching from Scott that I will never truly know how good he is. I've just happened to have choosen to receive my current coaching (3 times now) from a pretty bad ass, knowledgeable and passionate fellow out in CA who's setup his own Canopy Control coaching program (including Ground Launching on top of the swooping). But until I get to see how Scott teaches (or Mr Germaine), I never really will know who's better. So we can stop this bantering now. At least we agree that coaching is good and well worth the extra $$$. I'd much rather swoop with the knowledge I have now than try to learn it all through trial and error. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

No arguing that coaching is a good thing worth every penny and there is no arguing that Scott Miller is a very good qualified coach. I just don't think people should be saying that he's the best. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But without comparing his instruction with the other reputable coaches, it's hard to say if there is a best ... they're all good ... at least in the case of these elite PST type of coaches. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
-
That's a pretty subjective statement. Without a doubt Mr Miller is a very good canopy coach (only met him once and not in the student/teacher setting). But there are some others out there who are equally knowledgeable, equally as passionate about canopy flight and who spend just as much time with their students. The Federals list of what kills us the most
CanuckInUSA replied to freethefly's topic in Speakers Corner
No argument here. No argument here as well. You can choose not to believe me, but it seems to happen to a lot of people. Maybe it's a bi-product of the slower reaction times, but people do tend to drive slower after smoking weed. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Without a doubt people are intoxicated after they've been smoking weed and yes accidents can happen while someone is intoxicated. But a funny thing happens when someone gets behind the wheel after smoking. They slow down. The same can not be said of someone who has been drinking. Just an observation. Long term usage of pot is not good for your health. But it is not the deadly drug that uninformed think it is. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

And I don't hate you. Point taken. You've just got to understand that I am in a squirrelly mood right now. I was baptized Lutheran (a spin off of the Catholic church), but have since gone on to become Agnostic once I started to form my own decisions based on my own life experiences (remembering that I am not a young spring chicken here). The Catholic clergy has been oppressing their followers with idiotic threats of being damned to hell for centuries (and there is no sign that they intend to stop anytime soon). Call it whatever you want. Some of us (non-Catholics) just have to laugh that some of these followers still take their clergy seriously. Once again, call me anything you want (bring on the PAs). Shit I don't even care if you hate me for it. I just don't care ... because I'd rather follow the words of my signature "Less bitching, more jumping" than follow some religious leaders who are out of touch with everything around them. God may exist, but the bible is fiction. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

I did not mean to sound like I was saying the Pope is in the same condition that Terri is in. He's obviously still with us. But he is in really bad shape with no chance of regaining his former health. He is dying ... Now where would you like me to shove my [deleted]? You can throw your insults any way you want.
