  1. True ... we may never know why. But outside of the question of what went wrong, since when is it a good idea to be jumping a large canopy in high winds? It's not like we BASE jump with small canopies. We typically jump with very large beasts. RIP to the deceased jumper ... who's next? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  2. I pretty much just finished my 2006 tax return and I owe almost 14k in taxes for a sole-proprietor business I had in 2006. So I will be filing my return at the last possible moment. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  3. Yup ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  4. I was watching the CBC evening news last night when they were reporting the deaths of 6 Canadian soldiers and low and behold there was some dude walking around the base in the Kandahar region wearing a "DROPZONE.COM" t-shirt. Of course it should come as no surprise if this was an American soldier, but I was under the impression that the report was coming from the Canadian base (which could be shared by more than one country for all I know). Anyway ... regardless of this person's nationality ... Hats off to our brave DZ.COM brothers and sisters who put their lives on the line so that we can spew our views here on this website. 5. When first got into this sport (jumping 220s and 230s) I never thought I'd be flying anything smaller than a 150 or 170. But my JVX 87 is the smallest I've ever jumped and in all honesty I don't need to go any smaller. A 39 or 21 is out of my league (it's out of the league of 99.99% of us). 6. Yes all week long our average temperatures here in Alberta have been well below freezing. Global Warming may be a reality in your part of the world. But it has yet to kick in here. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  7. Make that five straights days of snow with cold temperatures. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  8. I just got to be me ... Oh and I'm not the only old fart swooper. I saw recently where Dave Billings mentioned that he just turned 40. I wonder if anyone got him his POPS # yet. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  9. Canada's healthcare system is a joke. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  10. I contribute to the overall production of CO2 on this planet every time I fart not to mention exhale the oxygen I just breathed in. So blame me for Global Warming ... but don't forget to blame yourself as well. Now what do we do about all those cows emiting their CO2s? Hmmm ... I smell steak on the bar-be. Also, what do your Global Warming Chicken Little buddies have to say about the increased sun spots activity and all the radiation/heat that comes with them? 11. Who remembers what Ronald Reagan said back in the 80s? "We start bombing in 5 minutes". Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

  13. Actually the root cause of your problem is not so hard to explain. But unfortunately the solution to your problem is a lot more complex, it’s rather time consuming and rather expensive. You see little is known about the original builder of the structure you call home. Some people like to call the original builder the “Grandaddy Of Designs” and some even claim that speaking to him gets results in the room. But this original builder has never shown his face since his initial work and pretty much just provided the inhabitants of the structure of an empty shell and the interior work of the room was left up to a variety of people. Well these people didn’t always do the work properly, they didn’t work well together and resentment and animosity was allowed to fester. So … to make a long story short, someone did a piss poor job of insulating the room and leaks exist all over the place in the walls, the roof, around the windows and around the doors. To make matters worse some brainiac had a bright idea to add a second HVAC system to the room complete with its own thermostat. So while the thermostat in the less desirable’s part of the room reads one temperature (which causes their heater to be on 24-7), the thermostat in your part of the room says something completely different and it causes the Air Conditioner to be on more often than not. Well since the room leaks and the windows, doors and roof let in moisture (not to mention the dude in the corner who continues to take a shower all the time), well once all this moisture meets the cool air from your HVAC system, frost and snow is produced. Now how do we fix this problem? Well there is no shortage of contractors lining up to give us advice. Some are rather shady looking since they’ve made their fortune in the room selling people things they don’t need and some are rather well let’s just say they don’t know what they are talking about since they’ve actually never worked a day in their life. All they know is how to tell people about their vision of how they can make everything better if we would only trust them by letting them take control over every aspect of our lives. Oh and there is a new breed of contractor who is trying to tell us that they can fix the problem (they are a spin off from the set of contractors who have never worked) and they believe that they can fix the problem by having some people “buying credits" from the other people in the room. So who are we to believe? Then Mike Holmes walks into the room, assesses the problem and tells us the only way we’re going to fix the problem is to gut the room down to the studs and start from scratch. Sounds great says some of the people in the room. Let’s do it. But then Holmes informs us that the room will be unlivable while the job is underway and that it’s going to take a very very very long time and he’s not so sure the habitants of the room will be able to afford the renos. So what are we to do? Well I wish I had an easy answer for you. But I assure you that the structure of the dwelling will be standing long after the interior of the room has become unlivable since the original designer was thinking much longer term that what we could ever think of and never really intended for us to occupy his space on a full time basis anyway. After all he did kick the previous tenants out (I think they were called the Dinosaurs), but we'll never know why since the dinos are no longer around and well the creator of the structure is an absentee landlord. But I do have some good news for you. In our tight labor market here on the privileged side of the room, we did find a contractor who has promised to come in before the week is out and he’s going to build us a fancy entertainment center which will generate so much heat that it will warm up our side of the room and our thermostat will kick in and the Air Condition will turn off and it will stop snowing. Then we can feel good that we’re back living the good life while all those on the other side of the room continue to hate us because we took the initiative to make our lives better while they sat around waiting for someone else to do something for them since they've never actually been good at doing anything for themselves and have always relied on others. But this contractor who will build us our entertainment center doesn't really know what he's doing and I'm sure the TV won't always work and the Air Conditioner will likely kick in again before the month is out. Oh but I should point out that there is a group of people in the room who want a better life, they recocognize that they'll only get one by doing things for themselves and have resorted to building some fires in their corner of the room to forge their own steel and make their own tools. They breed like rabits and vow to themselves that once big enough they will crush anyone who gets in their way. Since we on the privalaged side of the room are too fat and too busy entertaining ourselves, we just ignore their mess and let them go about their business which just makes the less privalges people who have never worked a day in their life even more upset at us. And everyone (well not everyone) lived happily ever after … The End Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  14. I don't dispute that humans have caused damage to this planet. But we should be concerning ourselves with the toxins just as much as a massive warming trend. But the "in" thing now-a-days is GW. It's what all the tree huggers are horny about. Toxins just aren't cool anymore. My original point was just to say the we here in Southern Alberta have been predominately buried in snow since October. Just when you think it's warming and Spring is ready to sprout, another round of snow blasts in. Then it warms up, and more snow. Warms ... snow, etc, etc, etc. It's been doing this every week for the ... I lost count and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the white stuff. 15. Wow how did the people in Whitehorse Yukon and Yellowknife NWT get beach front ocean properties. The last time I checked the globe, both those places were land locked far far away from the ocean (well Yellowknife does border the Great Slave Lake). And in case you were curious about today's weather in Iqaluit Nunavut the high was -26 and tomorrow the high will be -27. Yup sure is warm in Iqaluit. 16. You mean like the people who live in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut? Dang I've got it easy here in Alberta compared to them. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  17. Shows us how little you know about Canada if you consider Vancouver to be one of our cold spots in the country. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  18. I'm waiting for Global Warming to kick here in Southern Alberta. It started snowing here in mid October and it pretty much hasn't stopped since. Sure we've had the occasional warm day, but other than that it's pretty much snowed here once a week since October (on average) and right now we're dealing with -10 degree temps with snowy, icy roads and poor visibility. It's fine and dandy for someone to be located in Southern California to send their Chicken Little warnings that the world is coming to an end thanks to humans and the CO2. But for those of us who actually live up north, we don't see much of this waming weather trend the Chicken Littles speak of. But what would we know? It's only natural that someone from Southern Cal would know more about the north than those of us who actually live here in the cold. After all if Al Gore says it's true, it's true isn't it. Now if you'll all excuse me, I have several inches of snow in the drive way to shovel ... in April. I am so ready for Winter to end ... the calendar says it's Spring ... but we're still very much stuck in Winter right now. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

  20. Last year I was working with a relatively new Iranian immigrant (BTW ... he was a very nice intelligent person). When asked why he is in Canada instead of Iran, his response was because he disliked the direction that Iran's ruling leaders have taken these last few decades. So my question to you, is if Iran is such a great nation, why are you in the States? If Iran can do no harm, then why do you continue to praise them while slamming the so called country you are now a citizen of? At least my former work collegue wouldn't go out on ther limb, slamming his new country while praising the old one? He knew why he was here. Do you? 21. Remember one of the first things Darius told us all in this thread when these sailors were first seized was that the Iranians released the UK sailors soon afterwards ... I wonder who told him that? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  22. I'm not a climate change denier. In fact I've witnessed quite the shift in my local climate within the last 36 hours. On Saturday I was out and about in shorts and a t-shirt basking in some marvelous spring like weather counting the days until the DZs re-open. But now today I am all bundled up back wearing a winter coat looking at several inches of snow and temperatures well below freezing. Yes I believe in climate change. Only my climate change has gone from warm to cold when one would hope that it would be going the other way. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

  24. I do swoop and the approach of the 270 is not what makes it dicey. It's the commitment once the turn starts and having a temporary blind spot while you turn away from the LZ. In fact I will argue that the 270 approach is a lot less instrusive than the 180 where canopies flying on the same level are on potential collision paths flying at each other until the person doing the 180 turns. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  25. One other comment though. We need to make sure the docile pattern fliers can get to their LZ without crossing the flight line of the high performance area. Those of us who fly x-braced canopies know the incredible range of our beasts and usually have no issues getting back from a long spot. So to offer up an olive branch to the non-swoopers, I propose that the non-swooping LZs be made more accessible to the tradition pattern fliers depending on where the traditional jump run is for each respective DZ. What's the point of segregating ourselves if a bunch of low performance canopies are landing in the high performance areas because they couldn't get back from their spots (of course it couldn't hurt for people to learn how to fly their canopies more efficiently to get back from long spots).
