You must be thinking of "Red Wing Charity Night". Every year, they visit a team and let them win on purpose, so the fans will get pumped up, and buy more season tickets. The Red Wings take the loss in exchange for a certain percentage of future ticket sales. When you always win your division, you can afford to give games away now and then.
