August, 1996 at Skydive Dallas. Went straight to the AFF, and loved it. Was so jacked up on adrenaline that I never thought about being scared, which settled in somewhere on my level 3 or 4. Through my student progression, I think the most fun was my first solo from 13k. I just remember, since i didn't have to do turns or anything for a jm, that 60 seconds was a long time. I remember spotting other jumpers/groups in freefall thinking, THIS IS SO COOL. I still get goosebumps looking at my aff videos . That's the nice thing about having a job that allows autonomy..I'm currently going around to our different campuses and reimaging desktops. Skydive Space Center rocks. Went there last summer for a few days during a vacation, did some freefly training-loved it. Great dz, friendly staff, super planes etc etc.

How many times do you look at your altimeter during a jump?

From the 182 at ~10k, usually about 3 times. If at another dz, or a big plane comes in, 13k, usually a time or two more. Of course, one day I would like to try a hi-alt (20 k plus), but I can see me tripping out when the alti reaches the 3 k mark (the first time) and pulling at 15 grand (talk about spinning down until you puke). My play list makes me seem a little bi-polar...as I tic away at the computer, I have the best of King's X in the cd-rom. In the car, I have Paul Oakenfold, Chemical Brothers, Moby (all of them), Linkin Park, some Korn singles, PAT GREEEN ("here I go again, just a singin' in this dive, lone star beer in my cereal, and it's keepin' me alive), The Doors and one of my faves, P.O.D. Welcome to dz.com, from another relative newbie (to dz.com, that is). Let me be the pre-second person to warn you about using the "THE WORD" that preceeds the word "second"...as in statements like, 'that was my _ _ _ _ _ jump on my new main'. I'll probably get rotten veggies tossed at me by the veterans for warning you, but hey, I'm just a nice guy. Students need the money for their jumps, I remember the times. Have fun!! Definitely might want to get some coaching, even if for a few jumps. I thought I had a fairly stable, straight down sitfly. My first two way was with a coach, and boy was I glad. I realized that I was sliding around everywhere , and when we looked at the tape, I had a tendancy to lean back, which in turn, pushed me forward. Either way, keep practicing, and have fun. Can any of you guys give a 'market' newbie some advice/direction? Both my wife and I invest in a teacher retirement system, which for now, seems solid. We have finally cleared room in our budget to start doing other 'investing'. Problem is, neither of us knows much about it, and for obvious reasons, don't want to walk to some broker and say "here's our money, make it grow" (although I wish it were that easy). Thoughts? I really try not to wear too much heavy clothing when I jump, I need the oxygen to get to my skin so I can breathe in freefall. If I wore too much, I might suffocate when I left the plane . Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours.

I feel your pain. I finally got a cypres for my rig, and have been grounded by the doc for the past couple of months because of a blood disorder called ITP (low platelets - no blood clotting). Doc finally cleared me, and until I get paid next week, no $$$ for JT's. I'm taking HUGE amounts (a month on 100 mg/day, now 50 mg/day) of a steriod called prednisone. If you know anything about pred, let's just say that I should exchange screen names with Cornholio. Hang in there, and best wishes

I ran into a guy like that once. Told me that he was a skydiver. Asked him where he jumped at, and he told me that he had a friend with a plane that would take him and his buddies up whenever they felt like it. Then he proceeded to tell me about how they liked to land on the roof of his house. What I liked the most was how he kept using 'terminology' from movies like Point Break and Drop Zone that did not fit. I figured that he was making a jack ass out of himself enough, nodded my head, and went on my way. Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours.

Dang dude, I am but an apprentice at the feet of the master...of course, it's you and a roommate. I can't imagine what I would have to agree to let my wife have, if I were to get her to agree to let me have that sort of setup in the house.

Well, I better get one of those aluminum foil hats, cause wireless rules... I have one of those puppies (gateway/ap) too, and between that and my 500k cable high speed connection, I sit on the couch, surf, post, watch spongebob, eat dinner etc. What A/P do you have? Did you get a model that will be able to bump up in mbps when it's approved? At work, we use avaya, and they will be able to go up to 55 mbps in the future. Suppose I should make the most of the down time, and try to dig out more stuff to sell on ebay. I probably better stop before I get to selling my old, dirty socks. But the great thing is, if I sell those, someone out there will buy them. If I pace my sales, maybe I can have jump money at the end of next month. The 'texas lotto retirement system' has a good rate of return, but man is it hard to get vested into. Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours.

What a drag working for public school, only get paid once a month, at the end of the month. Good news , get paid next week...bad news , budget is sucked dry and there are folks 60 miles away at Skydive Dallas jumping very cool planes and balloons and stuff. Unless I can get a $20.00 money tree to sprout roots and grow, there ain't a chance for this weekend. Any other sad souls out there? Live on North Shore, I'd make that commute. Over here in Paris, TX, (pronounce Paaarrruussss), 12 minutes to and 12 minutes back. Sometimes that can be increased by hitting one of the 4 traffic lights in-between, or if someone's cows get out on the highway. I waffle on my stance of the death penalty from time to time, however.... in light of the recent abduction, and murder of Samantha Runnion (http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/07/19/girl.abducted/index.html), I currently think that the 25 to 40 year old male suspect who did this deserves worse than what the Iranians are going to do to this other chap. I'm no physcologist, but I don't believe that there is any 'rehabilitation' for a mind that is so depraved as to lie to a little girl, saying that he needed help finding his puppy, for the sole intent of dragging her away, doing no telling what else, and then killing her. By taking away the life of a child, I personally feel that he has 'signed a release form', waiving any rights he has to the rest of his life. Maybe that's just me.... (I will now duck to avoid the rotten fruit and vegetables that will possibly be tossed at me). Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours.
