Skydive just to swoop. You too?
dsbbreck replied to LawnDart21's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
It annoys me when the clouds are at 5000 and I can't get a group to just go do a Hop & Pop. Don't they realize, it's all in the Swoop. David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question." -
How much do you pay to get full altltude
dsbbreck replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Your input is worth something at Mile Hi. It's INPUT when you go to the DZO and discuss something you don't like constructively. Then you might get the facts straight. It' WHINING when you get on Dropzone.com and say something like this.... And this... And this.... And this.... I Love you brother, but your not helping make a Mile Hi a place to go to by openly bashing it's so called practices on an open forum instead of really getting to know what is really happening at your So called home DZ on a Daily basis. I'm sorry, but it really pisses me off when people show up one day a week and think they know everything about everything that goes on at a place that is open every day of the week whether we are jumping or not. If you think you have running a dropzone figured out, let's see you open one of your own. You have no idea what Frank has to go through just to keep this place open. I tried to help him last summer, but it was just too much for me to deal with. You couldn't pay me enough to deal with all the whining skydivers. I thought being a Landlord was bad having to deal with tenants. I'd gladly deal with them over you. From the original e-mail. This year April 26th marks the one year anniversary death of the founder of Mile-Hi Skydiving Center, Jeff Sands. The family of Jeff Sands has graciously allowed the continuation of the skydiving operation in an effort to preserve our memories of Jeff. Mile-Hi Skydiving Center and the family of Jeff, together proudly announce the creation of the Jeff Sands Blue Skies Memorial Fund. As a registered charitable foundation in Boulder County, this fund hopes to contribute and give back to the Longmont Community in many different ways. The family's wish is to contribute to causes such as the development of parks, playgrounds, children organizations, and other needs the community has in Jeff's name. Effective as of April 26th, 2004, Mile-Hi Skydiving Center will increase all jump prices (Tandem, AFF and Fun Jumps) by $1.00 to be directly donated into the memorial fund. In addition to this donation, MHSC will match one additional dollar for every jump made. Once again, we are all extremely excited about this charitable organization in Jeff's name. We very much look forward to giving to such a great cause, as we are sure all of you are too. Blue Skies! Mile-Hi Skydiving Center, INC -
When was the last time you got a raise as an Instructor
dsbbreck replied to dsbbreck's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It just came to me that in the skydiving industry, there doesn't seem to be many raises when it comes to being an instructor. Just curious, when was the last time the standard instructor rate increased. It seems to me that it's about $30 a jump around most of the country, and as far as I can tell, it's been about that for the past 5 years at least. Do you as an instructor think it's about time that the industry raises the jump rate for instructors to at least meet the cost of living? We use the AVE7 at our dropzone. It's a great editing board if you take care of it. Be careful when buying used ones though. I have found many out there that have a greenish tint on the output. This seems to be a common problem with them. I've seen three so far with this problem. David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

My up and coming 666 Devil jump
dsbbreck replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hey Steve, I'm going to be doing my 1000 tandem this coming weekend, WANT TO GO FOR A RIDE!!!!! HA HA HA (DEVIL LAUGH). David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question." -
It's true....there are a lot of instructors that don't do fun jumps anymore. I don't understand it myself. I got my tandem rating 3 years ago and also do video, but when I'm not working, I'm playing. It frustrates me to try and get the other instructors to go play when the work is all done. Oh well, To each his own, but I'm going to get on every load I can whether I'm getting paid or paying my slot. My personal opinion is if you make a point to let all your fellow skydivers know that this is your First time doing something, then it's obviously important to you and therefor the act should be celebrated by buying your fellow skydivers beer so that we can all get drunk and later say " do you remember when so and so did their First thingamajig and bought us beer and we got so wasted. Those were the days. . David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

Employment Contract and Copyright ownership
dsbbreck replied to jdhill's topic in Photography and Video
At my DZ, the contractor contract states that the DZ has a right to a copy and a right to use all video shot during the course of my employment but says nothing about having exclusive right to it. I specifically asked about my rights to use it as well and was told it's my footage, they just have the right to use it as well. I've been running my own business for 7 years and I really hate my boss. I'd quit but then there wouldn't be anyone to hire my replacement. David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

If the cost wasn't a factor, I definately would. I think the personality may not be the same, but with the same genetic makeup and the same owners, the personality would be similar. It would also give me the chance to work on some of those personality traits I don't like in her new training. I think Brian Germain's canopy seminar schedule fit's nicely in EVENTS & places to jump. Granted it works in Canopy control as well, but GEEEZ aren't we getting a little picky? David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

Best weather in Colorado - Skydive the Rockies
dsbbreck replied to dmbale's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Your right, If you called AWOS you would have heard a 12K ceiling. AWOS reports AGL and 12K is the top they report. We got full height all day. Ooh, ignore that post. I thought you were talking about Longmont's AWOS and thought 12000 was MSL. My Bad. David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question." -
Here's a little video of a coulpe swoops I had recently that I'm quite proud of. The first two are the same swoop, just the ground veiw and my view. This was a nice 230ft swoop. The last one is a little downwind sunset swoop. I don't know the distance, but the speed was incredible. http://highcountryrooms.com/swoop6.wmv David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

When I started Skydiving I said "I'll never do Tandems". Now after close to 1000 tandems I can say I love it. I started doing it because I could no longer afford to skydive. I could probably do something else and make more money, but I wouldn't be able to jump every day. Some people get burned out on skydiving and just do it for the money, but I love introducing someone to my lifestyle. I don't know how many times I've heard people say " you have the greatest job ", and I think to myself....they're right. I also fly camera which I love because I get to swoop my canopy. If there's no work available you can bet I'm on the load doing a fun jump. David David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question."

E-mail me with the design you'd like to have and I'll quote you a price. I make them for people in my spare time. I made one for Flyangel2 and WFFC. A picture of my most recent one is attatched. What Is With the Sue Threads?
dsbbreck replied to jmpnkramer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I sign a waiver at a dropzone it's with the understanding that there are risks that can't be prevented. If the dropzone was proven to be negligent then I would have no problem suing them if they knowingly put my life at risk and could have done something to prevent the accident. I don't see the difference between my local dropzone business and the commercial airline business. If my United Airlines plane crashed due to faulty maintenance I would definately sue, and I bet every other skydiver would as well. So why would you let your local dropzone get away with that negligence. David "Socrates wasn't killed because he had the answer.......he was killed because he asked the question." -

I voted "when we get to it" for this reason: We try and edit the video immediately so that the student can take the video home with them. This isn't always possible due to too few videographers and too much work on busy weekends. All the videos are edited before the videographers go home for the day and the student always has the ability to pick it up at the end of the day, but sometimes they opt to just have it mailed out to them.
