  1. I would be all for using it only if there is a suspect barricaded inside a house with or without a hostage situation and police have it surrounded with an active stand-off. It then becomes a tactical tool for a precision strike. Otherwise known as "one of the few times a SWAT team should actually be deployed". cavete terrae.
  2. Me? I've spent time and money trying to get us as a nation to stop telling other countries how to run their own shit, as well as bombing or invading when they don't do what they're told, which has the long-term potential to dramatically lower the amount of Americans who die because of "terrorist" acts done as retaliation for the above. I've also spent time and money trying to get domestic laws reformed that could lead to fewer civilian deaths at the hands of police acting on bad information, as well as protecting us from invasions of our privacy. But I guess that's not as cool as shooting brown folk in their own country. cavete terrae.
  3. Australian media do this, too. They talk about "Oscar snubs" like the very virtue of having a kangaroo on one's passport should ensure award nominations. cavete terrae.
  4. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm working on the book a little bit at a time, but there's just so much Team America and Team Jesus in there that it's difficult for me to read without substantial eyerolling. That on top of the "RAWR I AM AWESOME" writing style… ouch. cavete terrae.
  5. The real interesting point is that some people would end up taking an effective pay cut. I used to make substantially more tips than other delivery guys at work when I worked at a pizza place in college. Why? Couldn't tell you for sure overall, but there were a few specific customers who got to the point of asking for me specifically to deliver to them because they knew I wouldn't take my time, and they'd tip accordingly. Is that unfair? I don't know, but I can tell you that averaging about 15/hr in a small town in Iowa was good damned money for a college kid. On a somewhat related note, I bet generally-considered-attractive women make more money as waitresses than anyone else, all else being equal. cavete terrae.
  6. I don't know if have a hero, but if I did Elon Musk would probably be in the running. Yeah, he brought us paypal, but he also brought us spacex and tesla so we did ok on that exchange rate. cavete terrae.
  7. It's come a long, long way since then. Right now the biggest issue is basically education, because people are judging it based on the technology the older reactors are using. Nobody judges air travel based on the planes from the 1930s, or car safety based on the model T, but nuclear engineering for whatever reason has had its advanced basically ignored by the wider world. We're a long way off from fusion yet, but fission isn't nearly as scary as it used to be. cavete terrae.
  8. Most of those activists are too poorly informed to understand that up to 95% of so-called waste can be recycled and used again as fuel. Jimmy Carter, however, was a fucking moron and his legacy prevents us from doing that. cavete terrae.
  9. …and if we build more plants using modern technology, we can do less polluting with coal and other heavily polluting forms of power generation, especially if we stop being a bunch of pussies and start recycling our fuel. Geothermal and hydroelectric where appropriate, nuclear elsewhere, and joy of joys we've got clean power generation. Solar can work in some places as well, just not for base grid. cavete terrae.
  10. Invisibility would be far, far far far far far more profitable. cavete terrae.
  11. I herd they were aggressive because they were left outside during a heilstorm and their owner auschwhipped them until they did what they were told. As for the sausages, I'd Goebbles them right up, especially alongside some Luftwaffles and SSyrup. cavete terrae.
  12. Nobody looks good in a turtleneck. cavete terrae.
  13. While we're bitching about the financial side of life, one of the things that drives me insane in the US is how hard it is to give people money, after living abroad for 8 years. In Australia, I would have been able to get your bank details and send off a transfer direct to your account from mine, no fees, no middlemen, even between competing banks. Clears in one business day typically, or instant if we're with the same or partnered banks. As for personal checks… honestly, I see no reason why I'd ever write one again for as long as I live. cavete terrae.
  14. I have so, so many better things to do. I'm a cynic, and a bit of an asshole, but I'm not a complete cunt edit: Also, that'd be a pretty pointless thing for me to do actually since it'd be at odds with one of the things that drives me crazy: a criminal record check only proves that a person was CONVICTED of a crime AND had it placed on their record, it's not proof they've never committed one. My whole point in the thread thus far is that given the complexity of the insane overregulation in our society, the only way you can be sure you haven't committed a crime is to actually read every single law on the books, which might not be technically impossible, but I very much doubt it's happened in our lives. cavete terrae.
  15. Agreed. I have a HUGE pet peeve about every damned website trying to shove yet another app down my throat. I already *have* an app; It's called a "browser". Yup. If the app doesn't add actual, valuable functionality over the site it's useless imo. Worse than useless actually, because chances are that it's slower than a real browser. Case in point: Facebook. m.facebook.com is dramatically faster than using the facebook app, without the annoying autoplay shit, without forcing people to use messenger, etc. cavete terrae.
  16. That would be nice. Like a Dropzone.com app... Where we don't have to zoom in and out and shit like that. Nooooo, not an app. Just a mobile-friendly site. Well, both is fine, but never an app at the expense of the site. cavete terrae.
  17. My new years resolutions are 2880x1800 on the portable, and 2560x1440 on the desktop. cavete terrae.
  18. Jeez, What do you have against toddlers? Do you not understand how screwed up the kid is going to be for the rest of his life knowing he killed his own mother? Come on... I believe I covered that in the first response. "Well hey, at least you are ok with paracide, and kids living with death as a mistake. " Why do you need to post on dropzone.com? You don't need to, but you want to, and it's not impinging on the life, liberty or property of another person so there's no reason to prevent you from doing so. cavete terrae.
  19. You seriously think via social media the government isnt already monitoring us? You dont think banks already monitor trends and deposits for illegal activities? Same goes for email. I also have broken no laws via a computer I can GUARANTEE you. I love how quick people are to jump on those with my mindset. I never stated I OPENLY welcome billions of dollars to be poured into a NSA type agency, nor have I stated that I OPENLY welcome free and unchecked powers by such an agency. At this point in time the official use of these tools by the government is for purposes of good. Sure some asshole somewhere is monitoring emails to blackmail some girlfriend, you have private IT people that do it every day. Its paranoid and very tin foil hat to start freaking out about gunshot monitors, traffic cameras, and wire taps at this point. When the time comes that it is the MO of the gov to use these things for bad, and its easily and commonly agreed upon by all that it has gotten out of hand, then I will stand with you. But for now its "sky is falling" prepper mentality that I am seeing. "A stitch in time saves nine" would be the proverb of choice here. Also if you can "GUARANTEE" me that you've broken no laws via computer, please post all laws that you have not broken, with your initials on each for verification. I very much doubt the government is actively spying on me. My issue is that if they decide to fuck ANYONE over, they can. It's trivial because our system is so fundamentally broken, with so many laws that it's impossible to be sure at any moment you aren't breaking one of them. cavete terrae.
  20. I think that people who state what you have stated wish to hide things, and do not want others to say it for fear that it will be the more popular opinion and will hinder your ability to carry out illegal or shady things. If you've got nothing to hide, go ahead and post your login details for all of your social media accounts, your email accounts, your banks, and so forth. Then we can check against the hundreds of thousands of pages of laws to see which you've broken, because rest assured, you have broken some. cavete terrae.
  21. anyone who says "I have nothing to hide" or "I've done nothing wrong" is either naive or stupid. Edit: Or malicious. cavete terrae.
  22. if it had killed him I'd have sent a donation and a thank-you note to the manufacturer. cavete terrae.
  23. I can't take claims seriously from anyone who appends -gate to something they consider scandalous. Where is the NOAAgate building? cavete terrae.
  24. On my second one currently, been jumping them since '05. What's up? cavete terrae.
