Mandatory AAD's 2 (was: Franklin County fatality)
grue replied to flyboy6554's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's great if: 1. You want a credit card 2. You can even GET a credit card. Despite living in Australia for 8 years I'm still a filthy second rate human (read as: immigrant) who can't get a credit card. It's somewhat irrelevant since I don't actually want one anyway, but just pointing out that not everyone has that simple option. cavete terrae. -
Mandatory AAD's 2 (was: Franklin County fatality)

Yup, and the "It's only $100/yr!" argument is bullshit because that's not how you pay for them. I've been jumping for 10 years and only last year did I buy an AAD with intent to continue using it (I owned 2 Cyprii with a matter of months left on them in the past to get by on DZs that required them), and I bought a used Vigil 1. Actually it might be a Vigil 2. I have no idea. In any case, I always liked the idea of having one, but the price was a little hard to swallow. cavete terrae. -
For the original question: Legalize everything for adults to use in their own home or with permission of the homeowner. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, whatever. cavete terrae.

I guess you haven't paid close enough attention to the 2014 F1 season with it's massive regulation changes. The days of F1 engines screaming at 18,000 RPMs have forever gone the way of the DoDo birds. They've been limited to 12,000 RPMs but with the exception of the race starts, nobody is even running them remotely close to the limiter all because they all have to preserve fuel. At the current rate F1 is going, it won't be long before a Shifter Kart will be able to lap faster than an F1 car. Heck GP2 cars have pretty much the same lap times as the 2014 F1 cars. The sport has been neutered to appease the Greenies who never liked motorsports to begin with. I live about 500 metres from the Melbourne F1 circuit and could barely hear the cars at home this year. Laaaaaaaame. cavete terrae.

Yeah I went to boarding school and used to eat it there all the time. The smell of it is repulsive to me now, I'd rather kill and eat the nearest human. cavete terrae.

What any consenting adult does with his or her own body should be of no concern to the government if he is not affecting the health, liberty or property of a non-consenting party. Someone who chooses to climb a mountain that is not someone else's private property does not break those guidelines, and thus is not the business of the government… and nor is he their responsibility. It's that simple. cavete terrae.

Never move internationally, this shit is a logistical nightmare I'm going home to the US sometime before the end of the year, and have started the job hunting now since I can leave in a few weeks for the right job. But scheduling phone and/or video conf interviews with the west coast of the US from australian eastern time leaves me about a hour-long window before I go to work, otherwise they're going to see Early Morning Grue, a terrifying visage at best cavete terrae.

I don't think that's fair. It's his life, what he chooses to do with it is his business as long as he doesn't affect the health, liberty or property of someone else in the process. Frankly, I think insulting someone who did something like this only encourages it more, because it's a de facto admission that his life was only worth living to make other people happy. Why the hell would anyone want that? You think it makes people want to do it more than romanticizing his life and making him into some sort of hero? Three children and a wife might have something different to say. It certainly might. Granted, I'm an admittedly selfish person. I will never marry, I will never have kids, and I'm done giving up my dreams to make other people happy, because I did it too many times. I personally don't care how I'm remembered, but I assure you that the overwhelming majority of my adult life where I felt that all I existed for was to make other peoples' lives easier at the expense of hating my own certainly put some dark thoughts in my mind that haven't been there in times where I'm living for myself. cavete terrae.

Exit weight has been as high as 285 and is currently at a low of around 245-250 or so. 1-44: Raven IV, 0.95 or so w/l at the time. 45-115: Fusion 210, 1.27 w/l at the time. Dropping 70sqft, adding two cells, changing materials and adding taper on one jump wasn't wise, but I got away with it. 116 onward: Fusion 190, 1.45 w/l at the time of downsize. About a 1.3 or a bit under these days courtesy of losing rather a lot of weight, and since it's been about 8 years with this canopy I'm getting a bit bored of it… Prolly jump over to a Nitron 170 next. cavete terrae.

Edmunds Had A Lot Of Problems With Its Long-Term Tesla
grue replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
That's fair, but nobody's looking to build another RBMK, so the freakouts about new construction are a bit silly. We also need to reprocess our "waste" but trying to explain to people that nuclear "waste" is >90% recyclable is like trying to explain heaven to a bear. cavete terrae. -

No we didn't. Three Mile Island, Chernoble and Fukushima dug the grave and buried atomic power. It's pretty sad that nobody judges automobile safety by examining a Model T, but we judge nuclear power safety based on 60 year old reactor designs. WELP. cavete terrae. -
Edmunds Had A Lot Of Problems With Its Long-Term Tesla
grue replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
Not only nuke plant construction, but working with the entire nuclear fuel cycle so we can reprocess fuel on our own soil and maximize efficiency. That said, it's not all left leaning tree huggers who love Tesla. I, a fairly hardcore libertarian, think Elon Musk is doing a lot of amazing things between SpaceX and Tesla, and I'll gladly buy a 35k Tesla when they come to market if it fits my needs at the time. cavete terrae. -

Yes, but everyone knows GM can't consistently build cars that aren't pieces of shit and the company is a sinkhole. Tesla, on the other hand, gets to have a more or less tabula rasa when it comes to reputation. If there must be subsidies, I'd much rather they go to companies without a history of incompetence and low quality. cavete terrae. -
That's true. I guess the issue I have is that it's putting a lot of faith in a lot of people to not screw up, and I'm not sure if that faith has been earned. The US specifically has had a lot of reasonably high-profile fuckups recently with pathogen, and so I'm maybe a little bit more on edge than normal with them. cavete terrae.

I've never seen any evidence to make me believe there is a god, so I don't believe there is. If someone can present compelling evidence, my view may change. I am comfortable in believing that if I am wrong and there is a single all-powerful, all-knowing god, he is a vicious, psychopathic son of a bitch. cavete terrae.
-
Maybe this makes me an asshole, but I say keep it the hell out. I don't have enough faith in humans to believe the chance of saving them is worth the risk of a fuckup and an ebola outbreak in the US. cavete terrae.

Does the state sometimes knowingly and wrongfully prosecute persons for a crime they did not commit? Yes. Does the state sometimes succeed at this? Yes. Can the act of execution be reversed? No. Thus, I cannot support the death penalty, because by doing so I am supporting non-defensive homicide by the state. When they fuck up and torture someone for hours in the process of killing them, it only adds weight to my view. cavete terrae.

Did it when I was a lifeguard, not sure if I'd do it in a "real" job setting. Even then it got awkward when I got promoted to head lifeguard and then to manager because I had to treat her worse than anyone else, if anything. cavete terrae.

What is one thing that you will absolutely never understand the appeal of?
grue replied to promise5's topic in The Bonfire
You're a stronger man than I. I'd have cracked long ago. Once or twice a week I might be able to do it if I was very well paid, but to do it 5 days a week I wouldn't even consider it for under $200k/yr AUD, I don't think. Or unless my work day was 4-5 hours :P cavete terrae.
