At least they'd be consistent with my beliefs about the government in general But yeah I don't really like this whole "discrimination against committed but unmarried couples" thing. I don't think getting 90 days "unpaid" off a year to care for a sick Spouse or child has a poiltical slant. Not intentionally, it's just that most people assume that everyone wants to be married, or everyone wants to have kids, or everyone has a religion. Laws are frequently framed with these assumptions and can screw over people who don't want any of those things. it isn't an assumption. It is a requirement. What I mean with that is that a country needs continued growth. In order for that to happen, babies need to be born. To facilitate this, laws and regulations are drafted to help this. The less babies Americans make, the more immigration is needed to keep the country growing. I like immigrants. I don't like children. Everything works out. cavete terrae.

Man.......two lawyers in the family, and obviously one with a high pain threshold. Who presides over cross-exam er family discussion's and keeps order in the court er homestead......the acting judge, your son? My ear's are ringing from here, and my eyes are glazing over in legalize speak. Sounds like an interesting situation We're divorced now. I'm now happily married to a psychiatrist. Amazing woman If it's a cold morning can your in-house shrink cure shrinkage? cavete terrae.

Yeah I used to think that, too. Depends a lot on the company as well. I'm working at a startup for the first time, and the feeling that I'm actually doing work that matters is pretty cool. Of equal importance is the recognition of that work, which I'm getting. cavete terrae.

Some companies do allow a significant other to be on an employee's health care plan. Normiss was able to add me to his plan about 2 years before we got married. I'm very thankful for the gay community pushing for their committed relationship rights, they helped me too! Yeah that's a step in the right direction, and mine might even let me (haven't looked into it because while my health care is good and decently priced, adding my girlfriend if allowed would cost me more than I'm willing to spend), but it doesn't fix the issues with government. cavete terrae.

…and to this I ask, why the hell should a couple have to get married for health insurance benefits? Because not having them is expensive? I know a couple that were engaged to be married, had the wedding planned and everything. Big wedding was set for fall. In March the guy lost his job... And his insurance. He had an ongoing medical issue. One of those "Pre-existing conditions." If he went without coverage for any amount of time, he would have been uninsurable. To keep his (then) current coverage via COBRA, it would have been more than they could afford. They had to get him on her coverage. Which could only be done if they were married. So they had a very small, quiet ceremony in March. Only a handful of people knew that they were married for the entire summer. And then they had the big, planned "wedding" in the fall. It was a wonderful event. Nothing "sham" about their marriage or love or any of that. They've been married over 15 years now. But they "had to" get married right away when it happened. Sorry, I could have perhaps worded that better. WHat I meant was "Why is it that a couple has to go through a marriage to prove that they're a committed couple and be able to share benefits?" I'm not married to my girlfriend, and I won't be marrying her either because I think the entire concept of marriage is stupid. But to say that our relationship is any less valid and not worthy of sharing my health insurance benefits or whatever, because we haven't asked the government for their approval of our partnership is preposterous and somewhat offensive. cavete terrae.

We used to do that, actually. I was a lifeguard for a long time, and if it got hot enough we'd close because it became unsafe for the guards, and nobody was going to the pool anyway because they'd rather sit in the AC. I can only remember it happening twice. cavete terrae.

That's a very very good one. It's a love/hate relationship...love it for live sports, hate it cause it's always on at our house with garbage shows filling the voids between games. I got lucky growing up. My parents never let me play video games or watch TV for more than like 30 mins a day, never had a TV in my room, didn't have a phone til I bought a car...It was either play outside or read a book. We've got a really great TV with a great sound system that gets used for about 4 hours a week. cavete terrae.

Complete refresh of all legislation. Anything that doesn't impinge on the life, liberty or property of a nonconsenting entity no longer has laws against it. Tax code is dramatically simplified. All the pork barrel bullshit is gone. Civil liberties are protected. PATRIOT and MCA are struck from the books, etc etc. cavete terrae.

He posted on his facebook and social media that's not enough?? I hate religion and hope it dies off, but that's not the same as saying I think religious people should be killed, nor should it be construed as a threat or motivation for doing anything to make it happen. Likewise, I hate a good amount of people, and will be very happy when I hear of their passing if I outlive them, but I will not be party to making it happen. cavete terrae.

We're already the only belief class that can't hold public office in several US states. I don't think I'm even eligible for jury duty in one or two states. you realize my entire post was tongue in cheek and illustrative of points that people make about religion too I know, but it hits on a sore point for me. Not that I'd ever live in any of those states, or run for public office anyway, but the fact that there is on-the-books legislation that bars atheists from public office in parts of the US is crazy. cavete terrae.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A long-running parking dispute between neighbors motivated a man to kill a woman, her husband and her sister at a quiet condominium complex near the University of North Carolina campus, police said Wednesday. Beyond the parking arguments, police didn't comment further on the motivation or details of the crime; Boston Herald (and other sources). If true, then we can file under "shitty people doing shitty things". Just like many (most? I can't know) crimes where the alleged perpetrator is called out for being muslim, or black, or whatever. cavete terrae.

There are instances when I am in strong disagreement with our current President, but I do not call him stupid as he is my President. A very strong statement you made about two former presidents. Neither GWB or Obama are stupid. They are both conniving, evil shitlords, though. cavete terrae.

Also, for anyone who thinks atheists' belief system (or lack of an organized one) means we think it's ok for us to kill people? I don't believe in an afterlife, so no, I don't think I'd go to hell for ending someone's life. I do, however, cherish the life of the individual even more because of that belief. I don't think people who died of cancer went to a better place. I don't think people who were tortured will be repaid by some god that will take care of them because they suffered. I don't think that evil people will suffer in hell and that we should be sending them there as quickly as possible. Because of the above, I believe that we need to make the most of our time among the living, and to take that chance away from someone… ugh. Never impinge on the life, liberty or property of another without their consent. It's not that hard. cavete terrae.

We're already the only belief class that can't hold public office in several US states. I don't think I'm even eligible for jury duty in one or two states. As for this shithead that killed those people? He's a cunt. If he was a Christian he'd be a cunt, if he were a Jew he'd be a cunt, and as an atheist, he's still a cunt. I hate religion, I think religious people are gullible and their brains are wired wrong, but I'd never, ever do harm to someone solely because I disagree with his or her belief structure. Fanatics come in all forms, sadly, and atheists have our own bad apples. Now, I don't know if he did this because of his beliefs because 1. I haven't read the articles, and 2. We can't really know what was going in his head anyway. If he did? He's extra terrible. It's generally inexcusable to intentionally take a life without consent unless it's in defense of self or others, but to do it because of something… ugh. If it was over something else and people are seizing on it because he's an atheist? On the one hand, the media does it to Muslims all the time so at least it's consistent, but on the other hand it shouldn't be done to Muslims, either. Or ANYONE. cavete terrae.

Cancer vs religion is a hard one for me, but at least most people understand how bad cancer is for them. cavete terrae.

But but but religion keeps people from doing bad things I thought. That's why all the atheists are murders and rapists, right? cavete terrae.

"To this day, Muslims occupy every city vital to the early formation of Christianity except Jerusalem. " …so? It's this sort of thinking that leads people to fight over bullshit that doesn't matter. Hell, the very existence of the modern version of Israel and all of the fighting that followed is all because one group of assholes said "Hey our god said we should have this land". Just because it's lived in by someone with a different religion doesn't mean you can't practice yours, especially when you don't live there anyway. The original Model T plant isn't used to make cars anymore, but Ford is still making cars. Move on and improve your product. cavete terrae.
