Theoretical question: What if the disabled vet in question had instead worn a shirt that said "I fuck on the first date." If management asked him to take it off would people be equally upset? It bothers me everyone wants to focus on the fact he is a vet and his tattoo could be viewed as religious/political. The real issue at hand, is the DZ felt it was offensive to other customers. I am not picking a side, i am just curious as to what others think of this and why it's not being looked at in this light? Yeah we had a neighbor go to jail for doing that in our neighborhood when I was growing up. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

I would stay away from generalizations like that, or just generalizations in general (can i say that?) since it lowers the accuracy of your statement. In my experience, and the way crossfit is supposed to work, is that it doesnt sell to people that they are knocking it out of the park. Rather it's geared towards scaling to each individuals current and realistic level. The support/encouragement comes from showing growth/performance gains from that level. That has to be a parody. Most of what they are doing doesnt even make sense as they are making it harder in many cases. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

I love how even my criticism of other people's ridiculous criticism is criticized on this forum. It's an expression commonly used in the US. Maybe you arent familiar with it. If you really wanted to correct me however and be politically correct then you would have to tell me I am being age discriminant, not sexist, since "girls" was preceded by little. Or maybe you are ok with age discrimination but not sexism? Or maybe you assumed I have something against dwarfism, and you do as well, but you still have a problem with me being sexist? Really tell me. We need to figure this shit out as it's imperative to the safety of the wingsuit community. We need to figure it out and come up with a standardized way of dealing with it so we can write it into regulation and have the USPA put out a vote on it. Irony. You guys are ruining the sport. Seriously. Both on regulatory and social levels. Grow up. This shit is supposed to be fun. Thanks. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

It's amusing people are upset about the parade...and not the riot Sunday night. My girlfriend had just landed at BWI at midnight and taking a cab to her downtown hotel about 30 min away. An hour and a half later she called me freaking out because the cab wasnt moving, people were smashing windows of parked cars next to her, and someone had just jumped on the hood of her cab. My instant reaction was "Oh so the ravens lost?" (Obviously I am not a football fan.) I was shocked to hear they won...and the ensuing chaos in their own city? So my question is why is this allowed? I am all for personal liberties and the right to assemble, but that stops at destruction of property and violence. LEOs know this behavior is going to occur so why is it tolerated? Love that shit. It all started with one pair of pants at Bridge Day 2011...but as a wise man once said "well that escalated quickly." There is loads more footage out there of us jumping and partying in disco wear so expect more videos. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

Yeah, you pack differently for terminal openings. Some people roll the shit out of the nose, some people do folds, some people tuck these rolls/folds into other cells, direct slider control, holding your mouth a certain way, etc. There are a lot of tricks and everyone seems to find a combination they prefer really it doesnt make too much of a difference. When it comes to terminal openings on a BASE canopy i find body position is much more important than packing tricks...but no matter whats it's gonna slam ya. For the most part you just take the pain. When tracking you can go back to box and arch after you dump. When flying a WS you want to flare the suit after pulling, shut down the leg, and keep the arms flying. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

You've just provided the reason for the helicopter parenting. Not disagreeing, but one has to wonder if it's the chicken or the egg? Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

If you have night terrors i wouldnt be surprised if you also had other symptoms of parsomnia like grinding your teeth, sleep talking, sleep walking, sleep paralysis. I've had all of these my entire life but they tend to come and go in cycles. Stress/anxiety definitely trigger them and make them worse. Ask your parents if they ever suffered from it as most the time its hereditary. Also, if might not work for you, but some advice someone else gave me once worked wonders for me. Try sleeping in a slightly colder room or with one less blanket. I know it sounds silly, but for some reason if i get really warm under the covers and my feet start to sweat i am almost guaranteed to have one. Another trick although it sounds immature is to have a small light, or a big clock right next to your bed. Something to concentrate on to more quickly bring you back to full consciousness when you are beginning to wake up during the terrors. This is a helpful resource as well: www.nightterrors.org Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

Ever sat in on a school budget meeting? Another good point which is also frustrating. Everyone is throwing a fit right now saying we need to do SOMETHING/ANYTHING to protect the kids from something like this ever happening again. Since the 90's the state of KY has had 3 school shootings. On Monday it was decided 60% of their school safety budget will be cut. Skydiver impacts Turkey Vulture.
FreeFallFiend replied to OHCHUTE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It would be messy that's for sure. Big birds but i have never seen them very high. There are some electrical towers on the river near me that my friends and I like to base jump from. Two of them are notorious for Turkey Vultures and one the two easily had 100+ on it one night we were climbing. They dont scare easily and one decided to attack my friends stash bag...while he was wearing it. Really dont think a skydiver impact would be likely though...never seen them that high. I have however seen hawks on several occasions around 3k ft, both in freefall and under canopy. We had a skydiver vs hawk collision at breakoff last year and if left a perfect wing imprint on my friends back. (Backtrack from VFS formation.) When I was in High School we did have an armed LEO on premise at all times that openly carried. His official title was School Resource Officer. He was a full LEO that transferred from the Sherrif's Dept and had additional educational training. This was in response to a shooting and lockdown situation that occurred at my high school back in the mid 90s. The officer was a very well loved member of our school by both the students and staff. He assisted with kids with discipline/behavior issues in a very unique way that was both effective and comforting. Many students viewed him similar to the fun uncle in the family. Landing off, the hike back

Landing off, the hike back
FreeFallFiend replied to dthames's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In BASE jumping we use a stash bag. It's shapeless/structureless and can be stuffed in a pocket or jumpsuit. I always jump one in skydiving when I intend to land off or think there is a good chance of landing off. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes. -
Thanks, that's what I have been using but unable to turn anything up. I think its quite possible I have the wrong state, which really only leaves me with the pilots name and incident description. Oh well. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

I was hoping someone could recommend a search method for me. I am trying to get some info on an aircraft that landed with it's gear up. Unfortunately all I know is the pilot name and the state it occurred in. I know that doesnt seem like a lot...but it's South Dakota...so I wouldnt imagine there would be that many. Every search method I have tried requires a lot more info and no variation of google search strings in turning up anything. Most annoying habits of airline passengers

Based on your profile are you Delta out of IND? Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes. -
Yeah I was going to ask if there was a change in policy. For years I have heard wheels first, so I was confused when they started saying handle first wheels out. Oh well. I only fly 1st class if my medallion status upgrades me. My company wont pay for 1st class and I wont either if its on my own dime. I fly often enough though to know the best seats on all the aircraft I fly on and the tricks to get them. Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.

"Sir that bag wont fit wheels first" "Oh really? This bag that i fly with at least twice weekly and it fits every time? You mean the one with the Medallion member tag on it so you can see how often I fly?" Most of the following is exceptions, not rules, but as I fly all the time happens all too often, especially on evening flights. -Dont be rude to me. I am sorry this is your last or close to last flight of the day and you're tired and stressed because of other passengers. I havent done anything wrong, your job is to make my flight more enjoyable, so please dont treat me like an ignorant sheep that is putting you out. -Yes, you heard me right, a coffee, a baileys, and a glass of ice. It's not a strange request it's called delicious and if you had one maybe you would be in a better mood. -Dont talk about passengers even if the one you are talking about is out of earshot. Despite it being humorous, true, or ironic its not professional and gives a sense of elitism. Honestly for the most part i think flight attendants do a great job. I believe it takes a certain personality as well as strong resolve and a lot of will power to do it. Unfortunately there are some out there that really need to switch careers. An Alternative to Commercial Skydiving Helmets
FreeFallFiend replied to DFF's topic in Safety and Training
Not bad, although I'm not a fan of your cutaway system, esp in a base environment. I've had openings so hard that I have momentarily blacked out once and more than once landed with less than 50% vision from being rocked so hard. Looks like you could easily adopt a cutaway system similar to boneheads. It's cheap (they sell their kit for around US$30) and much less rick of accidental activation. Most annoying habits of airline passengers
FreeFallFiend replied to Virococha's topic in The Bonfire
I was wondering when someone was going to bring that up. I fly on an almost weekly basis and its funny to see the things people get upset about. Not enough overhead directly over their seat, waiting in line to board before their section is called, immediately wanting to stand up before the ramp is even at the door, etc. Its strange to see that these things fire people up but having your junk touched without explanation is perfectly fine. Its amazing the freedoms people are willing to give up to "feel safe." Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes.
