  1. Dragon Naturally Speaking is the leader in pc-based dictation (and pc command and control) software. http://www.nuance.com/ My cousin is a quadripalegic and has used this for about 15 years successfully. Dragon's product is based on statistical language modeling, and it learns your specific voice over time. The model is transferrable to a new pc, and can supposedly work with multiple pcs on a network. There are business-oriented systems out there that work without training (call UPS and track a package, or American Airlines and check flight status) but they have limited vocabulary and use a different type of model. Nuance (aka Dragon, Lernaut and Hauspie, Speechworks), IBM and Phillips are the major providers of English-language speech rec. Evan
  2. or Gruene Hall December's schedule includes: Cooder Graw Matt the Electrician South Austin Jug Band http://www.gruenehall.com/dec2005.html I miss Texas!
  3. Pete Swan did a really nice job on my comp cobalt 120. In my area (N. California), Pete does more re-lines than just about any rigger. Call him and ask for a quote. 209-365-9114 P.O. Box 24 Acampo, CA 95220
  4. Glad to help. Ebay is a pretty good source for quality lenses, especially the ultra-wide angles. Rich amateurs buy them, then realize they have no use for something this wide. You can set up a screen to send you email when something comes up below a pre-set "buy it now" price.
  5. I can't vouch for the sharpness, but a pro (only source of income) ground photographer I know swears by his. Tell us how you like it (and start those neck exercises)!
  6. Those pics were taken with a top-mount on a converted freefly helmet.
  7. The Sigma 15-30 weighs a lot (21.7 oz / 615g). This is heavy. Using a lighter body (350 vs 20D) helps, but 21.7 oz is a lot of weight. That is nearly as much as the Tamron 14mm (23.3oz). Here are weights for the other lenses I mentioned: Sigma 15mm: 13oz, Canon 18-55mm: 6.7oz, Canon 10-22mm: 13.6 oz. Generally, 1) a zoom tends not to be as sharp as a prime (fixed lens) - I think the Canon 10-22 is an exception to this 2) a zoom at its extreme focal length is not as sharp as the same lens in the middle of its range 3) off-brand lenses (Sigma, Tamron) tend not to be as sharp as the manufacturer's glass - Sigma 15mm fixed is exceptionally sharp but it has other issues (fisheye, no filter)
  8. This is a crappy (dark) picture that shows the rectilinear (straight) nature of the lens, even at the edges. Another in-plane pic and a canopy picture just because. All at ~15mm.
  9. This is a series of shots at 10mm, 15mm, 22mm.
  10. Sure thing. Here are two shots, uncropped, plus crops to show detail. Shot on a Canon 350, with lens at ~15mm.
  11. All of the 14's (Tamron, Canon, Sigma) are really heavy. Most freefliers here (N. California) jump a Sigma 15mm fisheye. It is small and light but it fisheyes badly and you can't use a filter. I have seen tandem folks use the kit 18-55mm, but the quality sucks. I just got the EF-S 10-22 and it is fantastic. _very clear_, light weight, and _no fisheye_. Goes for ~$650 US on ebay. The negs are price and it is an EF-S lens (it fits only the 350, 300, and 20D not full-frame sensor cameras). Sweet lens.

what kind of pie do you like?
  13. Ride to Davis leaves at 7am Sunday, from the lower Haight. PM sent
  14. 1GB CF cards (CFII, Ultra from Sandisk) are ~$70 each on eBay. (Watch out for shipping charges, though. They vary wildly.)

  16. Anyone have experience with stand-alone DVD burners? Speed, reliability, ease of use? Deuce mentioned using stand-alone for tandem student CDs but that limits you to 512MB. Looks like there is at least one product out there for DVDs: http://www.epinions.com/Addonics_AEMFR888D_DVD_RW_Burner/display_~full_specs Would be interesting to get feedback if anyone has used one (or has an alternative product). Thanks, Evan
  17. Interesting. Is there such a thing as a stand-alone DVD burner? (edited for spelling)
  18. I was thinking of posting cool pics, as a service to the local skydiving community. If I take pics for free, post them and tell folks where their hero shots are, will they appreciate it?
  19. Strong legs definitely help. One other thing worked for me in the tunnel (and the air - big time): Do the "Guy Arch" thing with your upper body, and lean back a little: Remember when you first learned how to skydive and everyone said to "arch from the hips, not your chest?" Well, do the opposite: arch your chest - I mean really stick it out like you're proud. keep your butt where it is (de-arched) and roll back your shoulders. Lean back a little so your back catches air. Totally works.
  20. Thanks guys. I just put in the order for a couple cards.
  21. Hey, To those of you with more digital camera experience than me (everyone)... is it useful to have more than one CF card? It costs the same to buy two 1GB cards as one 2GB. Seems that you might want to leave a card on the ground for printing, or downloading, etc. Is this realistic, or should I just buy one with double the capacity (one less thing to lose)? Thanks, Evan
  22. Hey all, Anyone have experience w. non-Canon batteries in their 350D? Seems like everyone and their brother wants to sell a knock-off battery for cheap (even B&H). Some have significantly higher capacities than the NB-2LH's 720mAh (ships with camera). All are cheaper. So... do they work? Leakage issues? Charge in the Canon charger? Thanks in advance. E
  23. Mad John, What time do folks have to be there to sign in? Thanks, Evan Matteo
