anything dangerous about a sabre?
ematteo replied to unformed's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
My first 3 camopies were original Sabres (170, 150, 135) and they served well. Remember that they are not elliptical at all. Because of this, front riser turns are non-linear. Instead of getting a smooth turn initiation, like on an elliptical, there is a dropping sensation as the front corner bends down, and then the turn starts. My experience- YMMV. Still a good, safe canopy. -
I watched my college roomate eat his Converse All Stars on a dare. Cut up in ~1/2 inch pieces and mixed with peanut butter. He almost kept it down...

anybody using Canon 17-40mm f/4 L in freefall?
ematteo replied to The111's topic in Photography and Video
17mm is not wide on the XT. If you are up for using a zoom, the 10-22mm EFS has a more useful (for skydiving) range, a lot less image distortion, is at least as clear, and weighs 20% less. -
Edit to add: this is $2.50 / $1000 _per year_.

Where you live matters. In California, First Colony and Lincoln National both quoted a flat $2.50 surcharge / $1000 for skydiving. This was the best I was able to find. YMMV

Need some help from the Bay Area Locals
ematteo replied to Bigwallmaster's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hey, have your friend pm me if he ever wants a ride to Davis. I live in the lower Haight and head up there often. Former-Green-Tortoise-driver Josh also lives on Haight, and Boomer (Byron guy) just moved in across the street from me. -

Since you're bragging, shouldn't that be "inappropriate?"

I agree. The original question states that the conveyor moves at the same speed as the *wheels*. Another way of looking at this is: if you lock a plane's wheels and stop them from rotatingat all, then run up the engines to full thrust, will the plane take off? Only if the tires slide reallly fast... My answer to the question, as written, is no. No takeoff (so the MIT vote is split). If the question was changed to match the plane's groundspeed (measured by GPS, perhaps) to the conveyor, then yes, it could take off. Just like having a tailwind, the wheels turn twice as fast but you still move. This is the difference between the question posted at the beginning of this thread and the one referenced in a link above.

two types of skydivers. those that have pulled silver and those that will.

NWFlyer has some good advice. Here is an article on layering: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/gear/features/layering.htm The store isn't bad, either. Key points: Bulk is not your friend. Layer instead (for mobility and gets the sweat away from your body) Wicking layer (synthetic) next to your skin is key. Gets the cold sweat away from you. Wear a hat. A huge percentage of heat loss is from your head. Have fun and drink a few at the Moose for us. E

What about ski resorts? I regularly use my ipod skiing. At Squaw this gets me close to 10,000 feet. Both Alta and JH are over 10,000. Am I flirting with danger?

For what it's worth, you can combine both features. Nuance made (probably still makes) a voice verification app that ran in combination with their speech rec. Useful for financial services apps. Especially good for reducing false negatives, since you can combine biometric and knowledge authentication.
