The length and quality of the tandem class is different for every dropzone. I jump at Skydive Virginia and we have a longer course than most. I would say that the result of this is that the students are more aware of what is going on and it really makes them part of the experience. I've been to some dropzones (not in VA) where the student is given a 5 minute briefing and then handed off to an instructor. For these students, they're really just along for the ride, granted they still have a blast. I would also look at what aircraft a dropzone is operating. DZ's operating a Cessna 182 only go to 10.5k ft with 4 people at a time where DZ's with Otters, King Airs, and other larger aircraft typicall go to 14k ft. I jumped a Tri 160 for about 150 jumps. Absolutely no complaints. I just began to want something more spiffy. By the way, if you'd like to buy my 160, it's for sale. Confusing windsock direction and landing downwind

Why is this such a big deal? Survival drownproofing is just floating motionless. The Navy SEAL version just has you immobile and bouncing off the bottom of the pool. While I wouldn't recommend someone trying this without supervision, both methods only assert natural bouyancy and the realization that you can breath with minimal physical expenditure.
