AF said that if you never had a 180 you will. Glad you're OK bro! I would not start experimenting going stowed off a cliff but everybody is different. I take cliffs very seriously. Remember that when stowed a PC will hesitate more. It is my view that if I'm going stowed I must take a minimum of 2 sec to build up some speed around me. 1/2 sec delay might not be enough for a clean PC extraction. Could you tell us the height of the object and the size of the PC? Also, could you post the video? Again glad you've got away with just few bruises! Memento Audere Semper 903

What kind of main are you jumping? ---again out of a plane

E-mod Alpha 99 @ 1.76 but at times I whish I had a Spectre 120 with a mash slider... Memento Audere Semper 903 -
Well done bro! Crongrats to you and your wife. Question is now when is she going to start to BASE? Memento Audere Semper 903

Not critical, factual, there is a difference...I think you should teach Yuri how to tard over the same cliff Memento Audere Semper 903

My first BASE was off a terminal wall. I went stowed. I had something like 60 skydives. Smart thing, I don't think so. In retrospect I just got extremely lucky not to kill myself but I did not know any better and the people I jumped with thought it was OK. Their rational was that all the pioneers started this way from this same wall and after about 6 sec I was going to find myself back in the skydiving enviroment. Buy hey at 38 jumps he should have thrown a gainer as well. I guess I make BASE much more complicated than it really is... Memento Audere Semper 903

Sure but he did not do everything right. Frst there is no need to use a 48 off a 450 cliff when going stowed. Second @ 38 jumps I think it's too early to jump a cliff and go stowed at the same time. His body position is a clear example of his inexperience. But hey a friend of mine jumped off a cliff with only 2 BASE prior so I guess it makes it OK. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1621484;search_string=broken%20back;#1621484 We see it every day. People jumping off cliffs with little to no experience. Jumping a cliff of any height is a serious business that many fail to realize. In the end I think the Potato Bridge is hurting more people than helping them. Memento Audere Semper 903

Here is my 0.02. First Yuri's strike was due to body position not the PC. I do not stow anything bigger than a 42 for the reasons mentioned by you and others. However I've had hesitations using a 46 vented (HH), few times. Ever since I switched to a 46 (same brand and fabric) with no vent, disk, or handle no more hesitations... New jumpers are attacted by the "cool" factor about going stowed. Forget about exiting stable and on heading, as long as they go stowed it's all good. I heard few times from a wise man that going stowed below 300' is asking for trouble... As for the 48" I don't use one. And for stir in some more crap to the mix. DW used to do gainers off a 180 stowed with a 52", go figure! Memento Audere Semper 903

Just got back from Europe and heard the news. Sucks big time. I remember my first time at TF...I made a jump at 5:00 AM. Then I was looking for a way to get on top. Nobody showed it to me and I did not bother asking anyone. Nobody was around that early anyhow. I went too far to the right and found myself vertical climbing like a mother. Few minutes later I heard an opening and by the time I climbed just few extra feet I saw Tom hiking on my left on the "normal" path. I go "quite a hike". He goes "Yes, especially the way you do it!" The next jump he showed me the right way to get up after a two way. Few days later was windy as shit but few were jumping. I go "I already broke my back once, I don't need this". He goes "I live here, I don't need this so bad either!" Tom was cool through and through. He'll be truly missed. Memento Audere Semper 903

No they are not. I might buy a better one, so in case I have to SL you, you won't bitch Damn! I go to Wally-World almost daily! No wonder why I do rigging with their products Memento Audere Semper 903

Ok Russel I'll buy a better one I calculated about 15 LBS. Memento Audere Semper 903

You don't worry about those piece of junk fake carabiners breaking before the breakcord does. This might bring up the whole debate about 80lbs. vs. 160lbs. needed to break the breakcord. 160lbs. on those junk 'biners kind of scares me. What are you calling junk? I payed a whole buck and 99 for a set of three Dude, if it breaks it's 0.66! As for strength...so far so good Think about it. Andrea's carabiners is really, really nice but if he loses it, he has to go to the very special nautical store that probably it is located 200 miles away. He lives in Italy and gas is 4 times as expensive. Then they pay something like 10c/mile of tow fees. Then the piece itself...probably you need to mortgage your house for that little cute SS carabiners! If I break or lose one I got two more! If I break or lose all of them, I go to Wal-mart and get a whole new set for 1.99 pus shipping and handling and applicable taxes and I'm set for a whole season! Memento Audere Semper 903

I guess great minds think alike Here is the set up I've been using. Instead of the fancy-nautical-store-carabineer I got the super-non-fancy-made-in-china-Walmart verity Memento Audere Semper 903

As an ex-hard-core climber I agree 100%. However the BASE community is much more fucked up and dysfunctional than the climbing one hence it appeals more to me Memento Audere Semper 903

It is clear you are not looking for an educated opinion but just what you want to hear. You want to hear this: "Given your paragliding experience, your skydiving canopy experience is way above your jump number so go ahead and get a small canopy" The truth is: "Given your paragliding experience, your skydiving canopy experience is in line with your jump number even though your overall flight experience is not, this might help you but can also hurt you". Skydiving and Paragliding are not isomorphic systems, not even weak homomorphic if you asked me. Bottom line: Use your experience, do not let it use you Memento Audere Semper 903

I want their SSN, mother's maiden name, and all their previous addresses. If they asked me why I tell them I used to work for the NSA and I have to do a background check making sure they are not going to inflict any terror with the rig. So after I sold them the used rig, I open a credit card on their name and get a brand new rig The manufacures don't care if the shipping and billing addresses are different because I tell them "It's for a costumer, you know". In the end, I end up with a brand new rig, and some cash in my pocket for traveling expenses Memento Audere Semper 903

I love it! Cold weather sucks in FF but it pays itself off under canopy especially when it gets around 20 and below. I think the coldest I've jumped (ground temp) was around 0. Memento Audere Semper 903

It sounds like a joke! Hey I'm upsizing...to a 65 I would love to say that just to fuck with some skygods! Memento Audere Semper 903

Dude 150' and you did not FF Loser I don't even go to the bathroom without my CWY S/L, it's that good Memento Audere Semper 903
-
Not under a 60! I know you are a very light chick but if you want to be competitive distance-wise you will have to upsize considerably and wear 50LBS of lead! On the other hand you might kick some asses speed-wise. If you guys are concerned about the added drag of longer risers you can always sew them together lengthwise...and wear spandex Memento Audere Semper 903

I was in that part of the world (Norther India, Ladakh, Kashmir) in the late eighties. I was just a little shitty teenager but I do remember what I consider now jumpable objects. That corner of the world is IMO one of the most beautiful, soul inspiring places on earth. Why don't we organize a BASE expedition there? Memento Audere Semper 903

Straight-In Velocity landings

As already posted, you'd be better off with a conventional 9-cell like a Katana or X-fire at the same WL. I also was flying an underloaded x-braced and it sucked. X-braced canopies fly best at 2.0-2.4. Below this range you get all the cons w/out any of the pros. To me it's like driving a 911 turbo at the speed limit: nothing wrong with it but what's the point??? Memento Audere Semper 903
