(due to exceeding the positive limits of angle of attack) (due to exceeding the zero-lift negative limit.) Bill, You realize I have no idea what those terms mean, right? Are you saying going faster might actually help deflect the wing, & is counter-productive?
-
That's what they've told me they're doing when I've asked. Speed up, & slice through the rough air faster, & w/a more pressurized canopy. I've been told it's a technique to help prevent canopy collapse. I'm not on the verge of having to unlearn something again. Am I? I hate that...

When there is turbulence in the landing area. I have to fly my dorky light WL chute. Flying the same dorky landing pattern as when a student. I see the more experienced jumpers simply grab a front riser, & bang a 90* turn. They accelerate & swoop in slightly faster for landing. They plane out about twenty feet above the ground. It appears to be a safer way to land when the winds turned wonky during the climb to altitude. Hell, I watched a guy swoop in like that w/a tandem once. To me, that's not really swooping. Swooping is 80+MPH mowing the lawn/pond. Clearer?
-
Jerry(?), My perception is of highly experienced swoopers dying for one slight miscalculation or surprise. That isn't a perception. It's a fact. It's already happened enough times for me to make that decision. If you don't see the risk? You're already in trouble.

DZs That Lie About Their Weekly Jump Numbers

Good point. I would like to have the option of pulling 90* front riser to help cut through some turbulence when landing. To crank 360*s & 720*s, & swoop in @80MPH, though? Hell no. How many super-experienced jumpers have to die? If instructors w/10K+ jumps under their belts can get killed by one slight miscalculation or surprise? I'd say it would be awfully arrogant & foolhardy for me to think it wouldn't happen to me. I don't care if I one day attain 15K jumps. I will never swoop. It is apparently too easy to get killed that way. Someone posted something to the effect of: "Sure kid. Come back & tell us that in five years." The rules of logic aren't going to change in five or fifteen years. I personally don't feel the gain is worth the risks. I don't think less of others who do choose to swoop. I simply have no desire to do so myself.

Thanks Dave, but I'm aware of the attributes of a ten year old rig. I've found two problems w/that approach. First, those rigs are in short supply, & high demand. Secondly, the sellers are aware of that math, too. The few suitable rigs I've found so far have been over-priced by about a grand. W/my battered frame, I'm not going to be downsizing much. Renting is the pits, & gets expensive. I'll probably blow $2K by the end of this season just in rental fees... I might have to just bite the bullet this Winter. We'll see.

Others here are right. You don't know what they did to it, but are willing to trust your life to it anyway??? Thank You everyone for the replies on this. After pricing a bargain-spec'd Dolphin system against a much nicer Mirage system. I'd only save about $600. To me, that's just not enough of a savings. That's not to mention a longer service life & higher resale value for the Mirage. I'm sorry Mr.Fury. It was a good idea, & priced right @the time. I think that time has passed. The math just doesn't add up anymore, IMHO.

Here Zach, There's a search function @the top of the Forums page. You can use that to find many answers for already covered topics. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2199405;search_string=booties;#2199405 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1082916;search_string=booties;#1082916

There you go again. Teaching us Newbs something useful. Damned old timers... Before I commit this technique to memory. I've a stupid question. This technique doesn't just work w/huge tandem lines, right? It'll work on a regular chute w/dacron & spectra, too?
-
So THAT'S why they told that tandem girl to take all her rings off. Eweee, dat B gruesome.

Twas a joke, Marius. Mmkay? They don't even pack the kid a line-over...get free beer...& now sit back w/popcorn watching the OP get pissed. Sheesh, what a racket.
-
Had to buy beer for the jumpmasters afterwards" They pack the kid a line-over, & get free beer for it? Sheesh, what a racket... FWIW Marius, I had a line-over once. I cleared it by releasing the brakes, & pulling down really far on that side. The steering cascade slipped off the end w/a loud phwomph!
-
Thanks, but I'm only thinking of ordering one.

& when it heals partially OPEN, smart guy? Whatcha gonna do then? I mean, other than need a graft to try & salvage some hearing...
-
Several years of college...followed by years of residency...followed by X number of years experience. What do THEY know, right? I hope you don't find out the hard way you should have let them heal. I also hope you don't make a habit of making such foolish choices. It will catch up w/you.

My first scare. Toggle turn stall and line twist.
PiLFy replied to ttribe's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
My mistake. I was tired, & thought I saw 1.1:1 WL. I was surprised an AFF student was allowed to jump a higher WL. My program was much more conservative. -

I am E-2 AFF student....it was pretty aggressive. WL is 1:1. ?! -
Hi, You need to go get your neck checked by a Doctor. Hopefully, it's just a disk bulge. It could be something worse. Were you not stable when you tossed the PC? Did anyone see you deploy?

Oops, sorry Jerry. I thought I was paraphrasing your post accurately. My Bad.

Joe, Exactly which part of "I didn't post here to change any minds. I only wanted to throw in a couple of points I didn't see mentioned yet. I leave it to the SC regulars to continue the endless arguing. My steak is ready. **SC disclaimer: My dinner wasn't killed in an act of self defense." didn't you get? I didn't come here to join the never ending arguing. I have my views & like them. You're welcome to yours so long as they don't infringe on my rights. You have a good night. -

We have different moral codes of conduct, my friend. For the record, I wouldn't try to kill the worm either, per say. As others here have already said. We're taught to fire @center mass as that's the most effective way to ensure hits, stop the threat, & slow the bullet. Police are taught to continue firing until the weapon is dropped. It's a good rule to follow. It's amazing (& unfortunate) to me that this guy forgot about the security cams in his own store. It's also amazing to me that this thread has gone on & on & on for so long. I know what I think I would have done in that situation. I'm also fairly confident a number of posters here wouldn't do as they say. Things are different when rounds start flying. I didn't post here to change any minds. I only wanted to throw in a couple of points I didn't see mentioned yet. I leave it to the SC regulars to continue the endless arguing. My steak is ready. **SC disclaimer: My dinner wasn't killed in an act of self defense . -

I wonder of you'll feel the same if YOU ever find yourself in that position? -

Not that I like to argue, as many here in SC clearly do... BUT, the unconscious POS was still a threat. I'm mentioning this point because I haven't seen it here, yet. Plenty of people have survived GSWs to the head. Let's say that POS survived, & recovered sufficiently to go back to his productive-for-society ways? Now, it's a year later. The innocent pharmacist is working his shop as usual. The POS is looking for some payback. I guarantee he'll come through that door w/more than a pop gun & no clue the second time. The pharmacist was the innocent victim. Is it fair for him to leave himself open to attack from the POS teen who already had chosen to major in recidivism? I'll bet any amount of money that that's what was going through his mind as he checked him.
