Thoughts on wingsuit training.....not just mine
bodypilot1 replied to VectorBoy's topic in Wing Suit Flying
The best was after I had released them from my supervision to do tandems with a passenger they also got to "ride" the barrels out the door after that. We did an drouge IAD and they rode the barrels for about 1000ft and then let the barrel go, and your right about the human being the weakest part of the link , they were stuck in the middle as the barrel accelerated to the end of the tether. The landings were also entertaining to say the least, when they'd forget to put the tether to the side with one leg and leave it BETWEEN their legs! I'll take your bait my friend. Though I think the point of your post is to justify your thoughts of wingsuits not needing some sort of a structured guideline or rated Instructor program, should a problem banning of arise in a higher level then it has already. Possibly a better question to ask would be, how many would be safisfied to know there is some sort of structured program or safety guideline, set up by the wingsuit flyers or manufacturers, with the forthought of having something set in place for proper instruction in wingsuit stlye and flight pattern safety, should some forms of wingsuit banning arise? Though, we all know even if some sort of program is implemented, any DZ can over rule it, or anything they choose, and the program would mean nothing. But if we show them that we are responsible and teaching the people, that have aquired or borrowed a wingsuit and may have low jump numbers , the proper technique on flight patterns and safety in that style of suit in a structured program, and that wingsuits are here to stay. All the DZ's had to deal with years ago was exit seperation for freefall. The parachutes were round and didn't cover much distance in the air. Now they have exit seperation and canopy flight pattern seperation. Also they have seperated the swoopers from the general canopy flyers with seperate landing areas. Will we need separate air space too? How many DZ's do you know that have BANNED hook turns? They have ONLY set up swoop area's because they know this is the future of the sport and have set up some sort of HP canopy training for the newbie that wants to look cool, but has no experience on a HP canopy. How many low time jumpers have you seen jumping something you don't think they are ready for, and said to yourself someone should take that away from them before they get killed? Are you truely concerned for their safety? Or are you maybe thinking, shit, if every newbie out there can get one that easy and kill themselves, they might just ban the HP canopy for everyone if it keeps happening? IMO, the new age of wingsuit are just in it's infancy, and will go possibly beyond our current thoughts. Wing suits will fall slower, thus DZ's with multiple aircraft will have to deal with a flyer out there still flying around when the next load is planning to drop. It's a problem we have already experienced in the past. They will also fly farther, thus they'll be dealing with their planes flight pattern, when they are trying to get the plane down as fast as they can for their next load. Maybe you think they'll never ban the wingsuits, but what if they decide after some more fatalities from improper training, just to not deal with it? Or just make us pay more for our jump tickets, because we'll have to do a seperate jump run far away from the DZ? I have dealt with a DZO that did ban wingsuits, and I can tell you now that they are welcome at the DZ now. Maybe Tom Aiello could comment on this he posted some time ago also? Jump what best fits your teaching style..... If you like to smile or YELL at the students and expect then to read your lips, rather then hand signals. Open face. If you can communicate with your hands good, like a thumbs up for when they are doing good, or be able to track forward with the legs out signal where they can see it, or shake them for an arch when you can't release one hand, and you feel the need to protect your chin? Full face with no face shield and goggles works fine. Having what you need to possibly save your own ASS is what is BEST for the Instructor. And with a knocked out Instructor, what good are you to a student? And I can not say this enough to new AFF Instructors, GET A F**KIN CYPRESS!!!! I have seen an AFF Instructor on a Cat C, ON VIDEO, sit back and watch an AFF student of his spin so fast, and he continued to let him spin from the moment he wasn't able to hang on any longer, which was about 5 seconds after exit, until the student finally pulled himself at 3000ft, and probably would have just watched until his student Cyress fired IMO. To top it off, after that ,on video, it shows him fly over to the camera man and high 5 him with a BIG grin on his face. After he landed he told everyone to come watch the video and when I asked him why he didn't try and stop the spin, his reply was, "I dont have a Cypres and wasn't going to take the chance of getting knocked out!" As much as I'd like to see you in a wingsuit, buy a Cypres! Be safe. Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

Some DZ's dont require the "sky tourist" tandem before starting your training. Since your planning on taking several months off, and possibly starting at another DZ, show them your log book. You many be rquired to start over again as a student but and ask them to if they can give you some of the TLO's that are required for you to be able to continue onto the ground training and the AFF portion of the training. You may complete all the TLO's at such a good level, that they will let you progress at a faster pace then someone coming in and just starting? Which ever path you take, try and save for at least 2 or 3 jumps before you start again. Jumping more then once a month will hepl you have a higher learning curve and maybe save you some money from not having to repeat levels. Be safe. Find a DZ in your area that offers a static line program, should he want to progress in the sport. His sinuses may get used to the altitude during the progression so he can go higher.

Unfortunatly any DZ can do anything they wish, should you deside to switch DZ's and enter their program. But, if you are jumping at a USPA group member DZ, they may just let you continue your progression as long as you are within the 30 days of your last jump. Speak with the chief instructor at the DZ your thinking of switching to and they will review your log book. I am sure they'll be glad to have you in their program if you arent happy at the one your jumping at now. Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

No, it's the nausea and throw up getting on the wingsuit from spinning out of the line twists, that is the issue! Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

Sounds like your doing fine, though canopy control should be covered during your jumps also. Have the instructor that teaches you your next level do a complete ground training covering everything you have already completed, including turns and forward movement in freefall and complete canopy control, from the controlability check, indentifying the landing zone, all the way to the correct landing pattern for the wind direction that day. Should he let you flare upon landing is entirely up to him. And remember it's your money! DO NOT feel as though you have to be rushed, and DO NOT do the jump until you feel you have covered all of this and feel properly trained. Be safe. Matt Try this. Next time try grabbing your mud flaps with both hands just below your 3 rings and steer thourgh your openings that way, should you have to. Also, if you are unzipping the arms before the canopy is fully inflated, there is still alot of air that is probably caught in the wing your unzipping, as you are straightening your arm out to get the zipper up smoothly, it's probably catching air causing your body to spin, and possibly not the canopy? Should you decide to watch the canopy through the entire opening, next time make a mental note of the heading and pay attention to the horizon. As you say..... >>>> I'd look down at my hands and start unzipping. After that I'd look back up and see 2-3 linetwists, with severe harness shift that caused me to immediately start diving.
