Agreed. By the way, what's the point of leaving the brakes stowed anyway (beyond the time needed to stow sliders, disconnect camera wings, etc)? That's not a rhetorical question. If anyone has a good answer for that I'd like to hear it. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

After a careful review of the international beer rules book, it appears you do indeed owe a case of beer. By the way, chapter 3, section 7, paragraph 5 says a 4-way is green bottles. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Interesting. I have made well over 1,000 vidiot jumps and never been flipped off. Should I feel left out? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
Today, Tennessee State law says No to Skyride!
chuckakers replied to Jumpdude's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
While I am happy to see this, I still don't understand why the whole Skyride thing couldn't be solved by DZ's simply not doing business with them. Seems everyone hates the company, but they're still in business only because DZ's keep them in business. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
I'm scared of my reserve
chuckakers replied to ryan_d_sucks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Pretty sure the TSO max weight is 254lbs. With that said, my advise is to not jump any reserve canopy you don't have 100% faith in. It, after all, your reserve. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -

Opinions please - best match for Canon 18mm
chuckakers replied to chuckakers's topic in Photography and Video
I'm using a Century .55 on a Sony PC100 and a stock 18-55 Canon lens on a Rebel XT. I'm happy with the still lens, but the .55 just isn't wide enough. Looking for suggestions on what video lens will best match the Canon 18mm. Thanks! Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
We hooked up every component independently to known good equipment. The only problem is when we connect my camera (using any RCA cables) to the DZ's equipment. By the way, the editing gear is Videonics brand. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

You bet! I'm bringing a special guest with me, too. Any guesses?

Student jump prices are in line with industry norms. So your complaint there would be more of a general complaint about the cost of learning to skydive, rather than a complaint unique to, or directed specifically at, Skydive Houston. $295 for an level at SD Houston $130 for a level at Spaceland so yeah i see some disparity There's no disparity in those prices. The $295 price tag is for AFF, which includes an all-day ground school and a jump with 2 instructors. That's 3 tickets to altitude, 2 instructor fees plus the fees for the first jump course instructor. That's a lot more in costs to the DZ than a tandem jump. Look at the TOTAL price to get your license and you'll find it's about the same. But hey, what would I know about skydiving instruction in Houston? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Sorry - forgot to mention we are using RCA cables, not S-video. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Just started shooting staff vids and have a problem with the DZ's editing gear. When I connect my PC100 to the editor (don't remember the brand, but it's pretty generic - the one with various wipes/fades/etc, with a matching titler unit) the video comes out almost black and white. I say almost because certain colors - mainly on the red side of the spectrum - show up, but flash from color to black and white. It kind of resembles the result of connecting cables incorrectly. Here's the strange part. I can hook my cam up to any other editing system (some vidiots have their own) and it works fine. Likewise, other cameras work fine on the DZ's gear. We tried swapping out each component (cables, tapes, etc.) with no luck. After much swapping and tinkering, we came to the conclusion that my camera and the DZ's editing gear really don't like each other. Any help appreciated. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

I'll be there for sure! Don't know about being an Anvil Bro though. I've dropped a few pounds and with my "ol' man" arch I might have to fly head down with the Anvils. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Mid-air cutaway retrieval
chuckakers replied to henryvillar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
With today's canopy speeds, off-DZ landings present more dangers than they did years back when canopies were easier to sink in. My preference is to watch where the canopy is heading while making my way to the DZ. I don't see adding the risks associated with an intentional off-DZ landing as a good idea in most cases. A busted leg will cost more than any canopy, freebag included. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
