That doesn't make sense. Either: a. they make money on the calendar and should keep producing it or b. they don't make money on the calendar and therefore should have never produced it. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

If any of that is true (2 hrs for AFF, 2 days to start base jumping), it would be typical of the Red Bull crowd. Aren't these the same guys that want to take over USPA so they can approve their own low pulls? If these knuckleheads aren't careful, they're gonna screw the sport up beyond repair. The FAA is filled with stuffed shirts that would like nothing better than to limit skydiving anyway they can, and crap like this can't help. Of course they have to find some way to "out risk" the Go Fast jet pack guys for the media. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

It's been a few days since the original post. Any word on nailing the S&TA/alleged thief/scumbag? Can't imagine he's too hard to find if he's the S&TA for a local DZ. I'm also a bit surprised nobody has posted that they know this guy. Hmmm. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Darwinian candidate AKA who the hell taght this guy ?
chuckakers replied to likestojump's topic in Safety and Training
I'm not part of your WE, You may have "so many landing related injuries and fatals (sic) these days" But here in OZ the culture to canopies and sizes is obviously different to in the USofA, so none of the things that happen in OZ are stats for your USPA. So I have no clue why YOU lot have so many landing accidents and Fatalities? Actually, landing injuries and fatalities under high performance canopies are a problem everywhere. No worries, though. You may change your mind about canopy progression after a few medical bills. Good luck with that. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
Darwinian candidate AKA who the hell taght this guy ?
chuckakers replied to likestojump's topic in Safety and Training
We can now officially stop asking why we have so many landing related injuries and fatals these days. This thread explains it quite well. However, this brings up another question: What the hell is this sport coming to. Wait...don't answer that. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
Just saw Billy Mays hawking "Mighty Mendit" glue on TV. Must be good stuff. They used it to fix a rip in a canopy, then jumped and landed it! Must have been a reserve too, as you could see a freebag come off the canopy during deployment. Now I'll never need my rigger to fix canopy rips again! Get yous at 1-800-503-5019. Anyone know where that jump took place? The aircraft was an Otter. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

You have struck on the beauty of concealed handgun permits. You (nor the bad guys) never know who has a firearm or where it is. That's why the crime rate drops in every state that has passed a concealed carry law. Bad guys are like any other predators. They seek the weakest possible victim, which is not usually the person with a gun. And remember, when it all goes to hell, it won't be cash or gold that rules. It will be bullets and gasoline. Wave off once? twice? and look Up? down? both?
chuckakers replied to bigbearfng's topic in Safety and Training
I don't think the specific technique is all that important, as long as you get the job done. You should be looking and adjusting for traffic while tracking (that assumes you can track straight while doing so). You can clear your air while waving off prior to throwing out. And something that is often forgotten - you should continue to scan for traffic during deployment. Get used to monitoring your deployment while checking to see what you'll be dealing with after your canopy starts flying. This can and has saved many canopy collisions. Find out where he wants his "overpayment" sent, then send an envelope with a letter inside that says "This is a sting operation. You are now being watched by authorities. You will be arrested when you attempt to leave. Good luck, asshole!" Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Actually you can drink from a cup in freefall. Check out the old Wally Gubbins movies - there's a scene where they take "cocktails" on a skydive. If you keep the cup upright, the liquid stays in the cup pretty nicely. When you tilt the cup to drink from it, there will be some that splashes out from the wind, but when the cup is upright, the liquid is in the burble of the cup. Might be best to use a large cup about half full. Make mine a Jack Daniels. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

"First down sets landing pattern" (was: Elsinore incident)
chuckakers replied to Nigel's topic in Safety and Training
If the first man down can't figure out which way to land with a 15 knot wind, I'm going to land into the wind and then tell him he's a f*cking idiot. Hell, you don't even need a wind indicator to figure the wind direction at 15 knots. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -

They (FAA) do if it's done on a public use airfield. These are demos RedBull is referring to. I could be wrong, but I doubt they want to do them at airports. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

The FAA sees it as parachuting and and not two separate sports usually. Huh? As far as I know, the FAA doesn't even recognize base jumping. No aircraft is used, no "certificated" parachute is required, and they have no regulatory authority over jumps from fixed objects. Did I miss something somewhere? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

...get a crane. The RedBull team wants a waiver from USPA to do 400 ft demo jumps from aircraft. Why don't these guys just use a crane? There are plenty of advantages: - no regulatory agency would need to approve it - jumps could be performed in all but the worst weather conditions - no reserves would be required - the FAA and USPA would have no authority over the activity My personal take on the waiver thing - not no but hell no. USPA's role is to administer programs aimed at keeping skydivers safe. A 400 foot jump would remove the ability to use a reserve in all but the most unusual circumstances (canopy transfer, maybe). Allowing single harness, dual parachute jumps to be made from an altitude so low that a reserve is useless is the same as not requiring a reserve at all. Since jumps from aircraft require a reserve, USPA would essentially be going against its' own BSR's (which require all jumps to be made within FAR's) by granting such a waiver. If USPA waives this one, what's next? There's really no limit to what one could argue for. USPA has screwed enough stuff up without venturing into waiving BSR's for the sake of would-be base demos. That would be funny if it wasn't missing a key element of comedy - a bit of truth. But what do expect from a guy living in a country that got its ass kicked by a group of citizen soldiers. Tea anyone? so the best you can do is call up a 200+ year old reference. that sounds like the mark of a HAS been I could have mentioned WWII, but common folks with musket loaders smearing an entire uniformed, trained, fighting force was funnier. Besides, reminding you that you still speak English rather than German was just too easy. it would be a leap to say that WWII anything but a monumental success for the brits. they have nothing to be ashamed of there. Easy to say in hindsight, but things would have likely ended much differently without the US led alliance. you mean the one where they were dragged into the war AFTER pearl harbour? that us LED one Yes, that one.
