  1. Skill requirement jumps are those on which the jumper demonstrates a skill needed for a license or rating, such as doing a figure 8, a 2-point 8-way, landing a certain distance from the target, etc. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  2. From Post #30: Thank you for illustrating my point. You're welcome. Lawyers...geez. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  3. Interesting - I have worked with Billy a few times over the years and he seems to be a good guy. I recently watched my son go through his AFF course with Kip Lohmiller. Kip's course was excellent. Everything I know about Kip is very positive and he offers courses on a regular basis. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  4. The problem isn't liability insulation, it's litigation defense. One suit would likely wipe you out entirely, regardless of how much you try to pre-emptively protect yourself. Thank a lawyer for that. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  5. No it's not Maybe not where you come from. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  6. Quote Call it either, it's illegal. It's also pretty sick. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  7. From the SIM... C. Logging jumps for licenses and ratings 1. Skydives offered as evidence of qualification must have been: a. made in accordance with the USPA requirements in effect at the time of the jump b. legibly recorded in chronological order in an appropriate log that contains the following information: (1) jump number (2) date (3) location (4) exit altitude (5) freefall length (time) (6) type of jump (formation skydiving, freeflying, canopy formation, style, etc.) (7) landing distance from the target (8) equipment used (9) verifying signature 2. Jumps for license and rating qualifications must be signed by another licensed skydiver, a pilot, or a USPA National or FAI Judge who witnessed the jump. 3. Jumps to meet skill requirements must be signed by a USPA Instructor, Instructor Examiner, Safety & Training Advisor, or a member of the USPA Board of Directors. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  8. Not sure how you came up with that. Not sure how you wouldnt come up with that Spoken like someone who believes the sport started 10 minutes before their first jump. Seriously, the Stiletto was jumped by many of the "Pioneers" of swooping, and they made that canopy look good!. Never thought of myself as a pioneer of swooping, but I have 1,000+ jumps on a Stiletto in the early years of production and it served its' purpose well. At the time (hand me my cane, sonny) it was the hottest thing around. There may be newer designs that have advantages over the Stiletto, but its' still an all-around solid elliptical that is quite capable on the swoop pond - if ya know what yer doin', that is. 10. The storm is a perfect canopy for someone with 100 jumps - assuming proper wing loading. I'm impressed that PD is working to produce better and better canopies for those who need or prefer moderate performance. When you're ready for more performance, I'd bet you'll have no problem selling a Storm to the next guy. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  11. God's speed to you, Airtwardo, and God bless your best friend. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  12. John, I kinda like it, but the HOA will never let this one by. Nazi's don't like the Texas flag. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  13. I wouldn't think so wth that light of a wing load. IMO no way the jumper could be going fast enough to blow up a canopy. IMO the canopy had a rip in it some where, it was just missed by riggers and packers, just speculatory. You may be right, but any canopy can blow up on any jump, and sometimes do so for seemingly no reason. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  14. This is not about the heated discussion going on there. I just want to know if anyone can confirm a fallrate of 70mph without the use of wings of any sort. I did check out the link from Ryoders reply. Looks like the slowest vertical speed on that graph was about 150 km/h, which is about 90mph. My question stands. Can anyone confirm routine Atmo-whatever fallrates of 70mph? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  15. From a post in another category: 70mph with a regular jumpsuit? Can anyone confirm that? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  16. That would be my bet. Ya might wanna slow down a bit more before dumping. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  17. Whataya sayin', they ala look alike? Wait...that was a typo. No, really. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  18. Beer... Most interesting slow mo! Proving once again that not everything that can go wrong always does. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  19. Given some of the silly crap I see some jumpers do, I'd say the SIM would be pretty good reading material. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  20. Now that's good religion humor! And you didn't have to be offensive. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  21. Then you went to the wrong Texas BBQ places. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  22. I would agree with you if it was just poking a little fun, but read the posts on that thread. Quite a few (including the attchment on the initial post) clearly have the intent of calling Christians idiots for believing what they do. I like a good "there was a minister, a rabbi, and a priest" joke too, but some of the posts were simply an attempt to cut down people's beliefs. I just don't get why anyone would want to do that. I would like to think better of people, especially skydivers. But hey, I guess there are assholes in every walk of life. Maybe kindness is out of style. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  23. in reference to this thread http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do%3Dpost_view_flat%3Bsb%3Dpost_latest_reply%3Bso%3DASC%3Bpost%3D3234849=View+Flat+Mode I've always wondered why some people mock the beliefs of others. Are they so sour on life they feel the need to drag the blessed down with them? Do they actually believe but hate God? Maybe they're just assholes. God bless them anyway - except for that whole blasphemy thing, of course. Enjoy the heat. It's gonna be a long day. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
  24. "Deep deep" brakes will actually cause the canopy to descend faster than holding partcial brakes. Using some brakes will slow the descent rate, as the canopy is not at its' slowest descent rate in full glide. However, going too deep (as in "deep deep") will diminish lift after the foward speed bleeds off, resulting in a greater descent rate than that of holding partial brakes. Lift generated by a wing increases and decreases by the square of the speed. Double the forward speed, quadruple the lift, and vice versa. Go too slow and you lose the benefit of the lift generated by keeping some forward speed. The perfect amount of brakes to hold to achieve the slowest descent rate is obviously different on every canopy type. The manufacturer can tell you what will work best for yours.
