What is this canopy? Old heavy 5 cell
mccurley replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
At the old Port Severn drop zone, were I did my first jump, we had 3 PCs and one Para Plane Sled that were sponsored by Belvedere Tobaco. I did my first PC jump on one of them. The Sled had ropes and rings and had to be packed different for terminal then for sub terminal. We watched Steve West plummet one autumn day as the Sled streamered in a complete bag lock, while Steve struggled with his ski gloves to be able to cut away the shot 1/2s and deploy the belly wart. He landed in a tree off the DZ. On the way to go recover him and the gear we met a helpfull Duck Hunter who had seen the desent and led us to Steve. The hanrness and container were still hung up the tree he had landed in. The helpfull duck hunter proceeded to shoot the tree down with several well placed shots. On the way back from there we discovered Steve's discarded glove and found the kicker plate from the reserve. Anyway if it's the same canopy, we had it on the DZ in 1974 and the damn thing used to mal about 1 in 4 jumps. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI -
Too Right. The copies we had floating around back in the day were nearly worn out they'd look at so much. Books like that and Carl Boenesh's movie, and Norm Kent's, were an insperation to a whole generation of jumpers. A friend and myself were the pre movie entertainment when From Wings Came Flight was premiered in Toronto as as fund raiser. The buzz around the room after seening the film can only be described as electric. All those guys were breaking new groound for the whole sport. Just how the hell do you turn this into an argument about ego and attitude????? I question was asked. Various replies were made which did not answer the question. Yea and mine probably is bigger then yours. Take that whatever way you like. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

I think a lot are missing the point here. I haven't heard of anyone else in this age group being an active free flyer. Look at that kid!! sit flying in cut off blue jeans and flying a camera as well. We should all be envious. (edit for spelling) Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

At 1:31, if you do a frame freeze, all you can see is the nose and windshield. From that frame it looks like the photographer just about ate wingtip Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

I seem to remember Eddie Grim copying something like that back in the mid 70s. (I know it wasnn't his original idea) For static line Direct bag operations I don't think it caught on. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

BILL COLE'S SURPRISE PARTY
mccurley replied to crystalcole1981's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Bill Posts on here from time to time. So you better sabatoge his computer to make sure the surprise isn't spoiled. I'd love to attend as Bill was one of the first people I met in skydiving when I did my first jump in 73. But as I live in NZ now, I don't think I'll make it, but pass on best wishes please. mccurley replied to dks13827's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I still have my copy of Parachutes and Parachuting by Bud Sellick. Written 10 yrs after Skydiving. I bought it very soon after my first jump in 73. Some great photos and stories in it. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI -

When I had my Cobra, in 74, Eddie didn't have a model that I'm aware of called a King Cobra. Just the Cobra, which looks like the one in Skypuppy's photo. I also haad a StratoCloud made by Eddie about 76. I know some of my grey cells have moved on to greater pastures but all the gear I owned in the 70's was Niagara stuff. Eddie may have made a larger Cobra and called it the King Cobra. I may e-mail his son Perry and ask him to look at these photos. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

I used to own a Cobra with a Baby Cobra reserve. Eddie Grim based the Cobra on a PS06 canopy. At least that's what he told me. I believe the cobra was on the market befor the Starlight. Mine was manufactured in 74 and they had been around for several years before then. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

I keep my left hand very short and trim the right hand to about 1/8 to 3/16 long. I do a lot of finger picking with prcussive beats added in and this works fine. Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI

Toogoolawah is great for all skydiving. And no kidding on the Kangaroos. During the 5 years I jumped there we twice had aircraft vs Roo. One landing not soo bad (well the roo was killed) One on take off, bent the plane and could have killed everyone, (again not so good for the Roo) Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI
