Supreme Court rules against Texas in abortion case
TriGirl replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Not much they can say. The idea that any of this had anything to to with "concerns for women's health" was a joke from the start. And Louisiana was able to keep the new rule it imposed: mandatory 72-hr wait between when a woman first seeks an abortion to when it can be performed. Reason? They want to be sure she has enough time to think about this decision and have the opportunity to get any counseling she needs. Um... the 24-hr wait didn't MANDATE an abortion had to be performed exactly 24 hours after the first appointment. Lawmakers made it seem like women wouldn't have any choice but to go through with the procedure at the 24-hr mark. At least the "waiting period" can be waived if the woman has to travel too far to the nearest provider -- and the way LA is also restricting abortion services, that may soon apply to pretty much any woman in LA seeking to terminate. On the other hand, this weekend will see yet another gun show at the convention center near my apartment. Third one at this location this year, IIRC -- they happen once or twice a month at different venues in this area. So to sum up I have to wait three days before I can complete a safe out-patient medical procedure on my own body, but I can pick up a firearm any given weekend? Yeah, that makes sense. Cue some absolutely classic creative swearing from a few scots on twitter. i particularly liked: "Tiny fingered, cheeto faced, ferret wearing shitgibbon" For me it's a tie between "ignorant fuckmuppet" and "incomprehensible jizztrumpet" (Okay, jizztrumpet wins) See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

Supreme Court rules against Texas in abortion case
TriGirl replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
I didn't read this, but a colleague told me that one Texas lawmaker, when asked about his insistence of admission privileges, was quoted as saying that anytime a patient is cut open, it's a huge risk! (in other words, he thought that abortions were performed in the same manner as a C-section). Again -- full disclosure, I was told this by a colleague who said she read the comments. No idea who the guy was, or what news agency/piece reported the comments. However, I did see on CNN yesterday an interview subject comparing the fatalities from complications from abortion (0.6 in 100,000) to the fatalities from complications from live births (0.8 in 100,000). Really, Billy? That's where you're going with this? The male and female drivers alike I worry about most are the ones in the left lane, and swerving over the line into my lane. As I pass them I look over and EVERY time see the driver staring at his or her phone. This morning as I was driving to work, I was in the left lane passing a truck in the middle lane. Making good progress faster than the truck, and moving at about 10 mph over the limit. A pick-up came barreling up and rode my bumper until I was able to get over. Except for getting a bit too close to my car, he otherwise wasn't being too much of a jerk (no flashing of lights). I just kept my pace, put on my turn signal as I was getting to the front of the truck, then changed lanes when possible. The guy behind me accelerated back to his faster speed, but not rudely so (i.e., didn't "brush" past me or make a dangerous situation). While it still kind of pisses me off that drivers get so close, I 1) thought of this thread, and 2) remembered that I was exceeding the speed limit AND making progress passing the truck. But since the guy behind me didn't otherwise create a dangerous situation, I let him go. Traffic backs up pretty quickly at random spots on that stretch of highway, so I have no reason to let someone like that influence my behavior to the point it makes me less safe. I used to let guys like that get me angry, but since I'm not worried about how big other drivers think my d*ck is, I've learned to let it go. Today is the Brexit vote. We have lots of bets going, what do you think?
TriGirl replied to ibx's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes, when he said that, we knew for sure it was a bad idea. Evidence that he doesn't know his audience: he said it to Scots, who voted 68% to remain (and as many have already noted, will possibly vote whether to leave the UK to remain in the EU independently). Possible terrorist attack - Orlando, FL 6-12-16

Um, did we all forget this is NOT the Trump vs Clinton thread? This is the Orlando mass shooting thread. If the OP discussion has run its course (perhaps it's best it has), then personally I vote for this one to be locked down. Ah she admitted to a straw purchase. No, she said in the article she planned to turn around and sell it to a licensed dealer (legal). She did not say the other dealer put her up to it: Buyer as the end user means NOT straw purchase. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -

But... But... OBAMA, in support of the militant gay agenda is going to force every church to perform homosexual weddings now that gay marriage is legal! Certainly the Catholic church will be required to recognize every legal US marriage as sanctified by the pope as well, right? Right? Possible terrorist attack - Orlando, FL 6-12-16
TriGirl replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in Speakers Corner
No, it's actually worse than that. The quote comes from a column in the DCGazette (self proclaimed "America's best conservative new source"{sic}) by Vianna Vaughan. Ms Vaughan herself invented the comment as a parody of what she felt a liberal might say simply so that she could point out how nice Chik-Fil-A are for helping people even though they don't like them. It's then been picked up by the right wing echo chamber and misrepresented as something an actual liberal said so it can be used to show, again, how silly liberals are. You can see the same thing in this very thread where RushMc imagined something that Obama might say, then used the imaginary quote as a reason why Obama is ridicules {sic}, except these people have a national outlet for their nonsense. Yes, this was my premise, but I wanted to go one step further. This is not new, but that particular "article" was an excellent example of how it happens every day, so easily. Someone says, "I wouldn't be surprised to hear" something, which someone repeats as, "my friend heard someone say" that same thing. This very quickly snowballs. Reminds me of visiting my cousin in 2008 before the elections. He considers himself on the liberal side, married into a very conservative family. It was painful watching both sides of the argument between my cousin and his brothers-in-law: [in-law]: Obama refuses to wear an American flag pin on his lapel! (bullshit story that had nothing to do with anyone's qualifications, and had been "debunked" months before anyway) [cousin]: But Obama is for change (keep in mind cousin couldn't tell you what he thought needed to be changed) Neither could tell you anything about either candidate's platform. N@ Been there. I understand why you emphasize that you don't regret your tattoos. I also do not regret mine (although I regret not speaking up more about the design of one of them), and yet I'm having mine removed as well. I've had a few more years to formulate my response, though. A few more years of people saying those same things to me: "oh, so you regret getting your tattoos, huh?" So I get why you'd go on the defensive. My response for why I'm removing them is not because I regret them, but because at this point in my life I don't want them. I wanted them when I got them 25+ years ago, and enjoyed them for a couple of decades. Now, I'd prefer to look different. No big deal, no regret -- just a different time in my life. And of course, I'm entertaining ideas for others.

Yes, I did Yet another narrative buster and an example of how this incident is such a threat to the lefts agenda. Um... I read the article. Total diversion. A columnist is claiming she heard the comments, yet no attribution for the speaker is offered. The comments section on the website is a perfect illustration of how many will take a report like this (with no attribution or corroboration) as fact as soon as it's published, since it agrees with their own agenda. I see no proof of any such liberal puzzlement here. Sorry, JohnnyMarko, that this is continuing to be a forum for political finger pointing and name calling. My sincere condolence for the loss of your friend. It's really sad that this jackass was so filled with self-loathing that he had to make so many more hurt, when there are so many resources in this country for people to get counseling. And if you really want to get some societal benefit from them, make part of their sentence to be community service -- in the form of reporting to everyone what the monsters really are about, and what life is like under them. These guys have some atoning to do, and what better way than to help keep some other knucklehead from doing the same thing? Get the truth out there from those who fell for the lie. Include pictures. Possible terrorist attack - Orlando, FL 6-12-16
TriGirl replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in Speakers Corner
Uh, did you miss the part where Mateen called 911 during the shooting from the bathroom, and pledged allegiance to ISIS? It wasn't just a hate crime. It was Jihad by a home-grown shit-turd little fucking bitch terrorist. There will be more of these attacks. Its up to us to try and stop these motherfuckers before they carry them out. Got one stopped in L.A. though. Open your fucking eyes. I'm going to agree just a bit with Normiss here (and no, I have not yet seen today's FBI report, Normiss). Just like the drunk loser in Chattanooga, who couldn't hold a job because he couldn't quit using drugs and drinking all day. This guy was a raging homophobe who couldn't just let other people live their lives (I'm interested in earlier speculation here about why he drove such a distance to this particular club). It's really easy for both of these jackasses to leech onto the hate-spewing group of like-minded sociopaths to provide "justification" for their evil murders. They were both losers who couldn't deal with their own issues, so they found a group to which to claim allegiance in order to justify their hateful (self-loathing?) thoughts. I could be wrong, and will look for the results of the investigation to fill in the information I don't know that I don't know. But that's how it looks from my perspective at this point. Daesh is using cherry-picked passages from the Quran to "justify" their sociopathic power-hungry, blood-thirsty behavior. They could have found this anywhere, but religion is the easiest path to "legitimacy." And they're finding plenty of like-minded dickwads to jump on their bandwagon. And I am stunned that the 2015/16 evolution of presidential hopefuls represented the best that a nation of 350 million people can offer. I think your country (and our world) would be much better off if y'all chose better candidates across the political spectrum. If we had a different system, this may be possible. As it stands, in most states, voters must be registered as having chosen the party before they can vote in the primaries. I read in one news report Donald Trump had only received about 5 million votes (I know it will be more than that by today). Five out of 350 is not a huge number. As I understand it, those who subscribe officially to one party or the other are quite the minority. Additionally, as has been mentioned before, the news organizations go after the sensational stories. Trump said today that he "won" all of the debates he's joined so far, and that he INSISTED that he get the middle lectern every time (if there were an even number of candidates, he "insisted" one be dropped so that only one could be in the center). As I recall, he preceded to monopolize all the time, without penalty by moderators, and therefore without giving the other candidates the opportunity to get their messages out. The next day, Trump's antics (because they were so odd for the setting) got all the coverage. What other civilized society runs its selection process this way? So yeah, we need a better system, where more people have their voices heard much earlier in the process. We need a better system. Oh, the irony: Ken Starr removed as Baylor president
TriGirl replied to jcd11235's topic in Speakers Corner
I think the irony you both missed is that Ken Starr became a household name for so vehemently going after the investigation into infidelity -- which many have equated to sexual assault (misconduct at least), since Lewinsky was an impressionable intern and he the CIC. And yet he is sacked over the fact that the university, under his own leadership, didn't care about accusations of sexual assault nearly enough. When I first saw this on the ticker my first thought was, "irony meter: pegged!" See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
Tangent: I'm in a career transition seminar this week, and one of the job search references we've learned is TagCloud. It gives a group of words that, in varying degrees, are tag words used for the type of job you want to find. The guy sitting next to me was using it today. As it was refreshing, the "while you wait" message on the website was, "we're re-fluffing the cloud!" See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!
