BillyVance's "You Can't Make This Up" News Stories Thread

I somewhat agree with you. I'll smoke pork ribs and brisket for 4-5 hours, then put them in a convection oven at 190-200 degrees F for the finish. Ribs need about 8 hours overall, brisket maybe 12-18 hours. I've never gotten the perfect brisket yet, but I keep trying for the moist, fork-pull-apart, smoky flavor goodness I've seen the pros make. Trigirl, can you send me a pm on your recipe? Sure! I'll send it from home tonight.

Fireteam leader is one more (very important) step toward Corporal. It's great to hear these success stories. I'm rooting for him. -
a message to the angry leftists from an american infantryman

FIFY. Please, people. There is a reason we have the 7-year rule about retired military officers servicing as SecDef. Congress voted to waive it for him, so let's show they made the right decision, and we can all see him as a cabinet member now, not as a general officer. Spousal rape or incest is the question here. Women in abusive relationships may well have, or feel they have, very little control over their own lives or their own movements. They can't walk out the door to go and visit a friend without fear of violent reprisal, let alone walk out the door to go and have an abortion. And neither of you even mention the young girl who is assaulted (oft times repeatedly) by the older male (neighbor, brother, brother's friend, uncle, father, cousin, teacher, etc), who has no idea what to look for, and is too scared to tell anyone anyway. Rigs confiscated in Melbourne - Dangerous Goods!
TriGirl replied to ellioty's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
And if you cite and post the regulations, you could word it in a way to imply your rigs are now not dangerous goods, but stolen goods. Those things are expensive! See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
This could be the first step in simplifying the tax code. And would create a hell of a market for lawyers! Not to mention, the confusion! " Hmm... according to the church, the candidate is going to hell for sex outside of marriage, but I'm going to heaven for voting for him. Yeah, makes sense. Okay!" Will the Rep pull the nuclear option on the SC pick?
TriGirl replied to mirage62's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm probably going out on a limb here but since Obama already pushed through two liberal justices (Sotomayor and Kagan), the Republicans did not want another liberal on the SCOTUS. Except Garland wasn't considered "liberal." Republican senators were quoted as saying that President Obama could nominate someone everyone could agree on, like Merrick Garland, but he wouldn't do that. Then Obama nominated Merrick Garland. That was one of the biggest issues that highlighted that the Rs were just playing political games. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
Berkeley celebrates free speech and diversity
TriGirl replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
I visited Berkley to attend a presentation/discussion during my time at Monterey for graduate school. I was pretty unimpressed by the condition of the campus, owning mostly to the presence of protest posters EVERYWHERE. Had they been supporting/opposing something serious, with valid arguments either way, I would have understood. Multi-colored flyers advertising meetings for groups supporting/opposed to dozens of issues, written in rather passionate language, as if the fate of the Bill of Rights itself hung in the balance of each one (though none addressing any issues even covered by the Bill of Rights, except the freedom to post the flyers and hold their discussions!). And those larger issues represented by banners and flyers were really not represented well. It seemed to me that the school was desperately clinging to its identity of social mobilization by trying to find even the strangest, unimportant, least impactful issue, just to have something to stand for/against, instead of really digging down into social issues and understanding all sides. It was pretty sad. If you want your opposing views to be taken seriously (and have a real impact), present a coherent argument, be prepared to discuss both sides, and behave like an adult. If you want to counter his hateful rhetoric, schedule a "counter-point" presenter the following evening or week. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
So sorry for this. I haven't been on BF in a while and am just catching up. How are you doing? Yes, unfortunately you had to learn a lesson last month many of us have also learned. It sucks, and I'm sorry. I hope you're able to help his family by letting them know how their late father/husband impacted and inspired you and other people. [sighs] It's Marine, not marine. Oh, and you mean 3-round volley, not 21-gun salute. The former is a detachment of riflemen (regardless of number) firing three volleys in honor of usually a deceased service member. The detail is often comprised of seven, hence the common misidentification. The latter is done by naval gunfire as a diplomatic salute off the coast of an allied nation. (I always wanted one of our ships to do that after a port call in Turkey while I was a diplomat there, but alas...) Now that the other Marine here has had her say on the protocol stuff... Congrats! He looks mighty sharp there at the inaugural proceedings. I remember working the Reagan state funeral as if it were last week. An exceptional honor. I presume he's at Marine Barracks, Washington? A friend of mine just left being the XO there. Two of my Marines here are headed up to join them with the Marine Band. As a lance corporal, your boy has shown great skill and bearing to land that gig. Again, congratulations. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
Depending on how long you're out of the house, you could put frozen meat (like, straight out of the freezer as you walk out the door) in the sous vide, with cold marinade or spices. You could also prep meat WITH the spices or marinade and use the vacuum sealer before freezing the whole thing, and place the whole frozen clump in the cooker as you're leaving for work. By the time it thaws (and reaches 40 degrees even) you wouldn't have much longer than 4 hours, I'd estimate, for it to be at that temp. And like you said, a good 2-hr cooking cycle during your drive home (assuming you bring the temperature of the meat up to 145-150 degrees) should equal safe, tasty, tender food ready when you walk in the door.

Market is much more reactionary than job creation. Few companies would start hiring staff based on what might be the result of Trump's policies. In other words, it is a lagging indicator. The markets did jump with Trump's election. part of the reason they have stayed up is that earnings have been generally positive. Like I said, too early to pin this on Trump. And then they dropped over the weekend after the immigration EO. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

Will the Rep pull the nuclear option on the SC pick?
TriGirl replied to mirage62's topic in Speakers Corner
I hope they won't have to. I hope the Dems can be the bigger professionals and attend the hearings. If the man is qualified, there should be no reason not to confirm. I don't know whether he is, or what his views are coming in (I've heard both "very conservative" and "centrist," so I'd be interested in how the hearings play out). On the Sessions vote, however -- they have more questions, so they don't want a vote before they get stuff straightened out. Why are the Rs making such a big deal out of it, when they're the ones who refused even to listen to Merrick Garland? Incidentally, I would be interested to hear whether any Rs now regret not at least holding hearings on Garland. Aside from the current nominee, the action would have been good political ammo for their issues with Dems right now. Poll, how do you feel about Trump's entry ban on select nationals
TriGirl replied to gowlerk's topic in Speakers Corner
I blame the media on this one, right, left, center, the whole of it for in the last 15 or so years being unable to educate the American people. Hell, most people in the US would not be able to tell you the difference between Shia and Sunni. As far as most people in the US are concerned, every Muslim is the same. And Yazidi is some kind of pasta dish with tomato sauce. Bah'ai is an island nation in the South Pacific See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -

Poll, how do you feel about Trump's entry ban on select nationals
TriGirl replied to gowlerk's topic in Speakers Corner
1 -- POTUS expressly said that part was for Christians. I thought the EO said that, but if not, at least the president actually said the intent was to cover Christians. (incidentally, he also said it was "nearly impossible" for Christians to get in, but Muslims were being admitted in droves. True numbers were 38,000 and change to 37,000 and change, Muslim to Christian). 2 -- There are Muslim sects in those countries that are minorities, and are persecuted because of it. Try being Yazidi in those areas. I'd be interested to see whether Yazidi refugees (outright slaughtered by ISIL in Iraq) would be allowed to come in.
