"Dear journalists: Stop taking Trump literally" -- Brad Todd
TriGirl replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
Yep. He saved a ton of money early in the campaign by behaving like a circus sideshow, particularly at debates, where his opponents didn't get a chance to speak at all. The media covered it because it was a circus sideshow. Now they're admitting they just didn't see how their attention to his antics gave him ALL the free media time. Someone should have turned off his mike when it wasn't his turn to speak early on, and told him he had no choice but to take the second-to-last lectern on the left if he wanted to participate in the event (he insisted always of being in the center, then used his position to upstage everyone else). Trump refusing his daily intelligence briefings
TriGirl replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
That is the question you ask of the people who voted for him. What other choice did they have? Someone qualified. If you didn't like the qualified candidate on the ballot, you could always write one in. Anyone check out Evan McMullin's resume? And the resume of his running mate? McMullin even pulled 20% in Utah, and only about two months after getting into the race. Impressive. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -

I lived abroad for three years. When I say "tour," I mean I was stationed there. And no, I'm quite sure I ingested no barium-containing products while there. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! -
I like the Q&A replayed on a news story I saw this morning. He doesn't seem to know what a "blind trust" is. When asked whether he'd set up a blind trust for his assets, he said he didn't know if it would be a blind trust, but he'd have his kids running the companies. Then asked if that's a blind trust? I would think anyone with even the basic understanding of big business would know the definition of a blind trust. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

I've been seeing eligible submissions for the past week or so in Speakers Corner. Here's today's: What is One Thing Trump Has Already Given to Some? Deplorables can anybody explain this to a non-u.s.-citizen? See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

On the one hand, it would seem Romney is an adult and a professional, and can set aside personal issues with the president-elect. On the other, considering what Romney said about Trump during the campaign (and even more so, what was said by the candidate), I can't imagine how difficult it would be for him to serve as Trump's immediate representative to the other world leaders. To those who say Trump does what every man does
TriGirl replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
That's the part of the tape I presumed he meant when he said every man had said something "similar" -- the judging and lewd talk about the woman they were about to meet or have met. He said, "in their lifetime," to which I agreed that perhaps it was applicable to a majority of "men," if "in their lifetime" included their teenage years. And to address the rest of Rush's post: I will also say that while people of both genders may engage in vulgar talk (as Wendy illustrated in her post), "vulgarity" is not how the rest of us define the other comments on the tape: where Mr. Trump admits to sexual assault (or at least claimed to have committed it). It's the 120k votes to flip FL I'd like to see! Although absentee ballots in Florida now only get counted if they arrive by election day (not postmarked by, as was in the past). I know a LOT of military personnel who changed their residency to Florida when stationed there, so those election officials must be incredibly busy counting all the absentee ballots each election year! Except the problem of their offspring, spouting it at school. Once this generation of old racists dies off, we'll still have the those whom they influenced. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

And we need to keep in mind everything was split pretty evenly. Yes, R's have a majority in both the House and Senate, but only just barely. I also don't think it's going to be a big Republican Love Fest between the branches. I'm putting some of my confidence that the legislature can still work for the good of the country (many returning R's are still vocally opposed to the president-elect's messages, and they're actual experienced and qualified public servants). Sure, many issues proposed are going to be more in line with Republican principles, but I don't fear the direction of the country just by the virtue of who sits in the oval office (although the tone and "leadership" will be watched closely). Dems would do well to continue to advance their ideas, work together in the legislatures (plural -- state-level governments are just as important), and worry about 2018 and 2020 later. It was the three-year presidential campaigns that's gotten us so emotionally invested and so focused on "what's wrong" instead of "what can I do to help." It's the future of the Republican party that I think will be interesting to watch. They really need to establish much more strongly what they really stand for, and communicate that message to the public. Otherwise, those who hijacked the process this year are going to be the new face of the brand. THAT's scary. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

Now the question is: where does our education system fail? (I'm also referencing the videos linked in the twitter accounts from another thread of schools having to close for fear of unruly students) How do we elevate the next generation out of this cesspool of negativity? This is what scares me. I'm not blaming the president-elect for the sentiment, but he did make it "okay" to express publicly again. And the campaign brought them out of the shadows and made us all realize how bad racism and other blind hate and ignorance still is in this country. That prevalence is what scares me. From another NY Post article, regarding the electoral college: (yeah, we knew this.) But the next paragraphs is truly funny... And again, evidence that the founding fathers really could never have predicted the people we as Americans would become. That's really pretty! Very nice work. If either of mine had turned out so pretty, I wouldn't be getting them removed now. Okay, maybe I would still be getting them removed, but I would have waited longer to do it. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

At best though, it can only ever uncover that which was deemed unimportant enough to not be dealt with securely. Except when you have someone with secure access who decides to open the windows on the WHOLE damn system, regardless of what all is there and who it could get killed. Taking that info from Snowden and just letting it all out without looking at what they had was reckless. If Assange wanted to maintain his credibility in exposing corruption or bad practices, he would have culled the information and published only what was pertinent. You still could not use them in Oregon. Here, you have to sign the outer envelope, this then is checked against your signature that is on file with the county Registrar. If it does not match, it is an invalid ballot. Having witnessed the battles over 'valid' vs 'non-valid' ballots when our house was a polling location, I am very sure that the system in Oregon is far, far superior. Some people simply resist change even when it is better for them. Jerry Baumchen Hey, Jerry. Mark said they THROW AWAY the mail-in ballots, regardless of whether they're legitimate. I remember when your ballot just had to be postmarked by election day, so yeah, I always wondered whether my votes were ever really counted. Now you have to have them at the voting office BY election day. That makes more sense. I just mailed my absentee ballot (active duty military -- Florida sent me my stuff automatically). Same deal -- had to sign and date the outer envelope, with the instructions that my signature had to match my on-file one as well. I had a few other items to send out that needed postage, so I took my ballot to the post office this morning. When I handed the mail clerk the rest of my items, he looked at the mail-in ballot rather suspiciously. I figured it was because he was trying to determine whether the "postage paid" mark was legit (it's a Florida ballot being mailed from Louisiana). But then he turned it over and seemed to study the certification section a little too hard (IMO), and then turned it back over to study the front again. I was almost reluctant to leave it with him! Now I'm starting to think that if my ballot doesn't get there in time on Tuesday (which, of course, I'll never know), that it is because this guy tampered with it or destroyed it.* *not intended to be an accusation to any postal workers. This guy was just hinky. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

Thanks, Jerry. So, looks like I was right. What makes this a news story now is not "we'll find the smoking gun in these new emails!", but instead is, "what the f*ck was Comey thinking doing it this way, at this time?" I doubt it. At least at this point, looks like news organizations are just using headlines to pull people in: So... they found a few more emails while investigating someone else for another alleged crime. Okay, fair. But they only know they're from or to Sec. Clinton, not what's in them (at least how I read it). "appropriate investigative steps... to allow investigators to review" the emails. I'm not a lawyer, but that tells me they want a warrant so they can read the emails under the light of the other case. That's it. I like Podesta's interpretation: (source: http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/28/politics/fbi-reviewing-new-emails-in-clinton-probe-director-tells-senate-judiciary-committee/index.html) It just tells me they're looking at everything they find to be sure they were thorough. I don't fault them for that, but I don't see it as a "breaking news" story. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

When the political parties are choosing who gets to use their money for advertising and travel, of course the parties should have control over how candidates are selected. In recent years, the parties have chosen to give more control to the voters who are registered in those parties, which has led to the current situation (party nominee who does not represent the party, and who does not have the support of the majority of the other party representatives in elected office). Donald Trump has mostly spent his own money for his campaign, so really he could have run as a "third party," naming himself the nominee for the Yam party. With his antics he would have gotten the same free media coverage, and likely would still be on the ballot with a sizeable percentage of support. The only two things that would be different today: 1) he would be competing against a qualified Republican as well as a qualified Democrat, and 2) those in the country blindly supporting the current "Republican candidate" would still be blindly supporting the Republican candidate, so Trump would likely not have as high a showing in the polls. As I've said elsewhere, the parties themselves could stop future derailments if they adopted rules that said anyone running as a candidate for their party must show how their proposed policies are in line with that party's platform. Some wiggle room on individual issues here and there could be allowed, but a candidate (or elected official) who strays too far would be subject to revocation of the party brand. Simple. The judge, along with the rest of the victim's family values keeping the patriarch of the family in place over punishing him. What's hard to understand? Everyone involved probably thinks it is at least partly the victim's fault for being just so darn cute and easy to seduce. According to the judge, one factor in his determination was that the victim didn't testify (or an advocate for the victim). So the victim's mother and grandmother chose to advocate for the "welfare" of the two boys over standing up for their daughter/granddaughter. WTF?? We're putting the onus on a 12-year-old (possibly 13 by this time) girl to get up in front of all the adults who have proven they are not on her side and testify?? There should be a petition to remove the girl from that home, since it's obvious she isn't safe there. See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump!

We knew about the Global Warming Problem in 1912
TriGirl replied to speedy's topic in Speakers Corner
Agreed; we could easily live with an increase of 1F. Unfortunately, the temperature is ALREADY 1.62F above the 20th century average. (2015 numbers) and 2016 is on track to beat even that record. So you start out seeing more warming than is possible from direct effects, and we are still getting warmer. Indeed, we are now on the high side of IPCC predictions. Plus, you have to take into account the effects these even slightly warmer overall temps have on the ocean. When the water is warmer at greater depths (i.e., 20 feet down), the effect on the atmosphere is catastrophic. That 20' depth of water at the same temperature as the surface was the condition just prior to the deluge that fell onto SW Louisiana and eastern Texas recently. Those storms formed in about a day, and dumped 1-2 FEET of water on much of that region. The area is still recovering. Dealing with Excess Adrenaline
