  1. One of the best weekends I've had in a long time. I love learning and this weekend was full of it. Highlights were A successful starcrest (rules to get a crest are that you must dock 5th or later on an 8 way). Exited rear float and was in my slot waiting for the base to complete, so I could put my hand out and take the dock! Tracking away from the 8 way and being certain I hadn't cocked my PC, was also fun, but not a thought I'd like to repeat (I had done it) Learned how to gear up tandem pax and how to hot fuel the caravan. Edited to add: also learnt that hosing the spot for the dzso, causing a go around makes both him and the pilot very grumpy. and results in a 'talk' Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. Why would they? That isn't the altitude/reference method. Well I've come across it a number of times, and that may well be what Andy was talking about. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. How many dzs teach, fly to the tall tree, turn at the road etc? I'm pretty sure that's what Andy means by 'reference'. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. FIFY OK, would have been a loooooooooooooooooooong subject, but heck... or simply 'boobies' and the clip, you'd have got more hits.... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. No, riding in deep brakes in any point in the pattern can screw up the people behind you, not just on final. The pattern isn't something you make up after you freefall, it is something you plan before you get in the plane. Then you're not stuck having to hold in brakes, you have already adjusted your pattern for the winds of the day/jump. Remember that barring a solo hop-n-pop, you are apart of a school of fish under canopy. You have to not only fly safely for yourself, but you have to fly safely and predictably for the other canopies in the air with you at the time. Very true. About a third of my jumps are hop and pops, and I only work on accuracy when alone in the air. After RW my priority is a safe landing, clear airspace and then accuracy. 6. Wait till someone chops at 7k and waits for 1500ft to deploy their reserve! It was pre aad days and the local skygod. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. Why not shift your entire pattern downwind slightlly? It doesn't seem wise to move the pattern down in altitude, as part of the reason is to survey the landing area, giving you alternatives if something is wrong. One trick you can use is to hold in brakes as soon as you've turned into the wind on your final. That way you can watch the accuracy spot easily, I was taught this on a canopy course and it is useful. Just remember that riding brakes on final can screw up people behind you, and to allow altitude for your canopy to recover to full drive safely. 8. That's all correct and understood... ya sorta missed my THREE statements about the SUCCESSFUL demonstration of an UNtightened (loose hanging) reserve loop being cut? You should have called your thread "Cypres cuts loop" to highlight the point Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I'm sure your right and hopefully I'll get to try them sometime. But going into your average supermarket, everything reminded me of coloured plastic. UK supermarket cheese is pretty good on the other hand. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. But Robs informative post, goes to show that the 'test' is a lovely marketing gimmick. Technically cutting the untensioned spectra is harder, but that's not what people come away talking about. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. Visual C, because I do more embedded programming (in C) so it is more familiar when I have to do windows stuff. C# is pretty efficient but I haven't used it much. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. Something they teach at my dz (hadn't come across it before) is to have your forearms and elbows on the strut when you step off and then to lower from there. Your forearms are on top of the strut running parallel to it, helps prevent the slipping off... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. I'd been planning on starting jumping video soon, with a view to getting my AFF rating asap. The dz requires about 100 training jumps for video, which I was about to kick off the jumps, and they advertised for help. It will work better for me this way, as I'll be able to see how I like working at the dz without committing capital on jumps first. Committing the capital on the jumps is a MUST DO regardless of whether you stay there or not. If you want to do AFF and get on the camera rotation at any decent DZ, you need the jumps and time in the game. BTW you are the new WEAVER I've been warned by Tim that I'll be kept as busy as a one armed builder in Baghdad. Btw my jumping is going up - just not paying for increased jump rate out of savings. 15. Well unless you go to private land, that is shocking make sure you experience africa, you never know when life changes. My wife only went once or twice (she'd not been before she met me) and regrets not seeing more. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

probably. Sweeping statements are always dangerous. I never did find cheese I liked in the US. Beer is another story though, very good beer in the US. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  17. Not sure what I've got myself into, but as of 10 minutes ago, I am officially working every second weekend at the dz. Starting out doing video editing, moving into jumping camera then AFF instructor over time. :) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Here tim tams are the rage for sweet food. But since most of my family (wife is the only exception) grab a carrot or cheese as junk food, I don't really know. We eat our weight in cheese (sadly something the US and Australia have in common is not great cheese), love a proper acidic English cheddar... She's a smart girl. She stocked up. They'll be worth their weight in gold (or jump tickets) before too long. Why, have they stopped making them? Not for another few days. Do they even have them down-under? Not generally available but you can find them if you look. I've tried them, they pretty much suck, so I don't know what all the fuss is about I've never looked. To be honest I like US savoury food, but Twinkies and most candy (except reeses peanut products) taste like carcinogens packaged with sugar and fat Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

What's up with Twinkies? Iluvtofly was posting her Twinkie stash on facebook the other day. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. I'm giving up. One last remark, though. The demonstration of a loose loop being cut cleanly holds relevance: If it does cut the loop even when it is not tightened, it definitely will cut the loop in the way it is set up in a reserve. Sheldor AFK As I say it is a miscommunication. The slack loop is 100% relevant, so would demos of cutters that have been exposed to harsh abuse ( sand or grit in the hole, cutter left in water or salt water). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. Why is that something that should concern me when buying an AAD? SIGH! As I wrote before: I - unfortunately - missed to tape the "proof of the pudding" when an actual loop - under pretty bad circumstances (not tightened, hanging loose, no plastic tubing) was also cut through, neat and clean! If I had known a number of folks don't read my article in full I would have refrained from posting and would have waited until I'm able to post the vid with the loop being cut... Hey, it's just miscommunication. All people are saying is it is a marketing gimmick. Yes it's fun and interesting, but it holds little relevance to what it is designed to do. 24. LOL Hahah I'm going to direct Mrs D to this thread That would be the end of me. Summer in Perth on the trains is torture I tell you... Far too many cute ladies. Dude it's not summer yet, wait another few weeks Yip, I remember January.... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
