  1. - I jump every 2nd weekend on average. (frequency has increased greatly since working at dz for past few months) - Around 200 - C license (Australia) and B license (USPA) - about 90 Miles - Engineer - 38 - Married - 3 Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. Australia - you have to be a member of the APF. Packer B - allows you to pack student and tandem MAIN parachutes (as well as licensed jumpers - but at $45 a jump, people pack for themselves!) Packer A - Allows you to pack RESERVE parachutes in addition to the privileges of packer B, but not to do repairs. Rigger - As per the rest of the world. PS. For a team you could probably get away without being a member. It would probably be difficult if there was a major problem like a fatality. 3. we get quite bad hail on occasion. A few years ago there was a very bad hail storm and there are quite a few cars that look like golf balls on wheels. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. A local news article - http://www.perthnow.com.au/why-we-stray-off-true-loves-path/story-e6frg4nl-1226547826663 But this gem in the comments reminded me of Shah Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. I'm a USPA member that voted "No opinion". I don't wingsuit, I don't intend to wingsuit and so why should I impose my views on those that do? I think it is a valid option on the poll. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. Thanks Terry & Jerry for the explanation. While it is a legal minefield for a container manufacturer to 'approve' a component for use in their system (e.g. reserve or AAD), it would make sense that there was some form of declaration of compatibility. 8. I also think that a lot of it does have to do with culture. The US is obsessed with defending themselves and as such come across as scared and insecure. It's been ages since I've been in SC - whats happened to JR - not a single post in this gun thread from him? I can't figure out if pops is for or against gun control - but then most people would take one look at him and runaway Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Councilman - doesn't the TSO cover the 'system'? Surely the reserve deployment (3 seconds/300 feet) is highly dependant on the container used? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. Maybe PM John Sherman? I know there is a theory (it makes sense) that a tight reserve will take more force to extract and therefore could take longer to deploy. I have no direct experience with it though, and tight is relative. Surely the rig manufacturers 'approve' the container and reserve combinations? 11. Standard RSLs are simple proven technology, skyhook is complicated new technology. For me the potential issues and add complexity of the skyhook is not worth the 150' quicker it gets your reserve open in. I still don't understand how the skyhook is a "complex" system I can't remember the exact formula from reliability theory, but the number of ways that a system can fail is something like the nth power, where n is the number of components involved. So a MARD (Skyhook) with multiple complexities is many times more likely to go wrong than a simpler system. * Of course, humans are still more stupid than a more complex system, and this needs to be factored in. I am utterly convinced that RSL is better than a human, I'm not so convinced that a MARD is (yet). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. I don't know the jumpers, just had the link posted on a facebook group. Dude, your awsome, it's a retorical reply, kind of a pun... But the underlying point is scareeey...THE PROLIFERATION of shit hanging off your body to get a picture when it is so fuc#$%ing easy to streamline stuff, this whole subject is insane!!!!! That Dude could have been killed!!! Trust me it dosen't take much!!! EXCELLENT vid of an ALLMOST!!! I got ten bucks nobody learns shit from this one... I'd like to be wrong??? C - so used to people not reading things and making assumptions. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Where is your dz again? Because, I'm going to reserve the right to use (or not to use) my RSL.
  14. My rig has a new skyhook in it,... AND now I lay awake nights THINKING,...that If ever I pull my reserve I have a piece of "new Tech" that in order to save my ass, it has to release??? (For the reserve pilot chute to fully deploy) I gave my life to Bill B. and John S. a long time ago, about the only thing these two agree upon is that a RSL is a good idea. And I trust them! And bear in mind a guy with 66 jumps on student status is probably not the best source of information! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  16. Times have changed. I started jumping in the early 90's and then, people genuinely worried about shoelaces. It wasn't uncommon for people to tape over their laces But people also jumped barefoot or in sandals. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  18. We're nearly hitting 50 at the moment in parts of Australia!!! Difference is that it is Celsius and a heatwave (122 F) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. Completely agree. I had been using my previous gopro in the sea. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  20. 99% of my dz.com use is with my android mobile. If from a pc the I use chrome. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. This isn't a scary story thread or a request for advice, rather passing on the story of my first few camera jumps. First of all I have been jumping the same gear for just on a year, prior to putting on the camera. That includes my helmet with cutaway and chin cup. I have been 'technically' allowed to jump camera for most of the past year, but I didn't feel ready. A few weeks ago, I got fully debriefed by the dzso clipped the gopro on and went off to do my first camera jump. The jump was a solo from 5k out of a 182. I had intended to turn the camera on for the jump but forgot to. One thing that really strikes me, is the amount a gopro sticks out on top. It requires conscious effort to maintain awareness of the potential snag hazard, when in the plane and on climbout. I appreciate freefliers jump with cameras, but it's pretty clear that if you do rw (like I do), you need to plan the exit, and remove the camera for certain linked exits. 22. Go with the rsl. 'We' tend to screw up more often than the requirement does. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. Honestly that is largely bollocks, dropzone drama happens all over the world and your 'poor me' posts are getting really old. Yes our jumps are more expensive, but so are our costs. If you want cheap jumps go to the US for a holiday of jumping. Quite a few people do that... To the OP, minimum currency is 30 days, nut to progress you want to do as much as possible. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. Don't forget to factor in medical bills - then we're cheaper Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
