Sensory Overload/Reaction to danger
nigel99 replied to nigel99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
vVry interesting thanks. on a persoanl level I handle stress considerably better when i am fit. i am trying to put what you have said into context within my experiences. i can remember every detail of dropping my bike and yet I have also had a floating handle that I only know about as my jumpmaster told me that I did (no recollection or knowledge that anything was wrong on the jump. i don't know if that should encourage or scare me. I do know on a personal level that I "over think" situations and need to force myself to relax. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
I suggest you learn how to use the shift key to capitalize appropriate letters. It is hard to do when you are typing with one hand! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

That sounds like fun. We could also have an Anti-Christ scale and a return of Jesus scale. Each time a prophesy is fulfilled the scale will increase by .10 Sure and every time someone posts dumb crap about God and creation it can be reduced by 0.1 Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

you are right on the threat levels - it is joke. We over between Serious threat and Very serious threat The scales need recalibrating I suggest a scale of 1-10 Mohammed Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Those neutral Swill should take a lesson on the calmness of the Brits. Excspecially in regards to cheese. Maybe that is the problem - all that pent up fear bubbles up through their cheese. You watched the video? He is pretty damning regarding the US attitude towards the whole terrorism thing. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Funny piece on terrorism and Bin Laden etc by Rich Hall - skip to 3:20 in the video for WTC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xITNIJBTnSM - skip to 6:10 for Barack Obama/OBL. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Just so we don't have to see the teeth!! Well Swiss women look really good but they tend to have tiny boobs. To the extent that they have even named a mountain after them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titlis Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

i dont know if you have noticed, but every thread in SC turns into a pissing contest - actually every thread over the whole board! yeah most threads do - but remember a pissing contest takes 2 Just bear in mind that when people mention freedom here in Europe we are allowed to see boobs Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Jeez guys do you know how ironic it is that a thread about a hate monger has degenerated into a pissing contest I think most countries bar the occasional nut-case - remember not to long ago a UK teenager was barred from the USA for life for sending stupid emails to Obama. Sensory Overload/Reaction to danger

Yes the military are a perfect example. I find it interesting as on a certain level it would be nice to know who is pre-disposed to freezing up BEFORE things go wrong. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -

The taster from Brians book is very interesting and I keep meaning to buy a copy. One thing I do know is that it can't be a background of growing up not being exposed to danger. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -

I am curious as to whether it is possible to test a persons response to a life threatening situation. I would also be curious to know if it is possible to train your mind to react "properly" under times of extreme stress. I have witnessed a person having a fairly normal malfunction (not a high speed mal)and yet they died as they simply froze up. We hear of people with literally thousands of jumps experiencing brain lock during a malfunction and then you will get a low time jumper who responds perfectly. My wife knows that when exposed to danger she simply freezes up. For example riding a motorbike she got scared and simply kept the throttle open and the bike upright and straight (fortunately it was a small bike and a nice soft hedge at the time). I know about Brian's book on Transcending Fear but was wondering what other sources of information there are. In her case she would love to jump but she absolutely knows without a shadow of a doubt that she would not handle an emergency appropriately. Seriously Jo - you should be the last person on the thread to even mention copyright Sometimes banging your head against a brick wall is less painful than reading this thread! I must have a self harming streak in me... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Like his daughter's and granchildren's right to see their father/grandfather.... The do NOT have the Right to see him in our country. I agree they are welcome to visit him. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

its only an STD if you've got carpal tunnel from assisting pops - otherwise it is a self inflicted injury. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Only an American could claim that some other country is violating his 'constitutional rights'. Textbook example of why the world gets 'pissed off' with Americans/America in general. Fortunately most people do realise that he is at the extremely dumb end of the spectrum. Beyond thinking that he is a dumb-ass I am not sure if it is a proportional response but then I haven't looked at what else he has said/done. Generally the UK is very relaxed on who can come here. Thanks for the detailed reply. I guess that I believe normal people have accidents and gun owners are no different. I agree that people do stupid things that are negligent - it doesn't stop me being amused at the vehemence shown regarding use the term "accidental discharge". There are probably hundreds of examples where people react badly to what they perceive as the wrong use of terminology (look how excited we all get when the media say the parachute failed to open on a swooping accident as a close to home example). Anyway I am pretty sure this debate is largely polarised and much more discussion is only for shits and giggles on both sides. Aw come on, let him be a little picky. Poor Andy, Is in desparate need of a strong dominatrix to keep him in line. {THWAAAAAAAAACK} That should be heard at LEAST as far as the swoop pond I thought Banasaura kept him in line? An accident implies it was completely unavoidable. Due to the fact most skydiving deaths/injuries are the result of human error (like most forms of aviation), the correct term is mishap until proven otherwise. I personally feel anybody who experiences a ND should be suspended from owning/using weapons until they pass a certified safety course. Fair enough you are using mishap for skydiving in the same manner as negligence for a gun. You skipped the car part - I am pretty sure that nearly all car accidents are the direct result of someone's negligence but we still call them car accidents. A safety course is a good suggestion. My personal experience with gun accidents is that the guys who have had them are extremely careful afterwards! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

This always makes me smile. By this definition there are never skydiving "accidents" or car "accidents". The fact that the generally accepted meaning of the word is twisted in word play is hilarious (certainly not singling you out I realise it is a widespread argument used in the USA). If you are 100% certain that "negligent" discharges are not accidents should there be laws prosecuting anyone who has such an event - such that any person who experiences a negligent discharge should obtain a criminal record (preferably with a custodial sentence) and be banned from future gun ownership?
