  1. All good advice thanks. I don't like full face helmets for a couple of reasons. I know the potential benefits, but personally don't like the way I can't see handles as easily. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. is it possible to sell GoPro video for outside tandem vid ? Just to be clear I don't intend to do paid work. But I still feel that DSE point is valid. The chin cup and cutaway double the price of the FF1. It is still a cheap helmet though. I mainly do small RW and am intending to get into coaching at 200 jumps. gopro footage is good enough for that. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. Thanks guys. I sort of anticipated that would be the case. Edit: Sorry follow on question. Is it worth getting the chin cup? I am looking at the FF1 from 2kc. You have the option for cutaway and chip cup. I guess a chin cup gives a more snug fit? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  5. Firstly before people get the wrong idea, I am buying kit just before a move to an expensive country (Australia) and I am not jumping a camera with sub 200 jumps. Is there any reason why I can't just have a quality hook knife and not bother with a cutaway system on a helmet with a go-pro? It seems to me that with a standard open face helmet, a good hook-knife would take care of the chin strap very easily. 6. I don't know what the US laws are. In the UK if you are on notice, even if you are not allowed to go into work (gardening leave), you are technically still employeed by that company. This means you get paid for the time, but you are not allowed to start your new job either. Good luck with the change. 7. As have I. 56 bones in 50 years. But hey...leaving it all in worked great for the kid in "Kickass, the movie"... Holy smoke. Were most of those skydiving? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  8. Won't replace broken kids....I've tied. Well, nowadays you tie your kids up, its child abuse! Well on Friday I get 'tied' does that count Doesn't take away the current 3, though we are over 1/2 way to them flying the nest.
  9. Congratulations and I realise it must have been a hard choice. My grandfather managed an old age home at one point. He said the worst thing that he had to do, was telling people they were no longer safe to drive themselves and to hang up the keys. He chose to stop driving at 70, based on what he had experienced. Glad you have a good memory of your last tandem jump. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. Jim - you should send that advice in to the USPA with a $1500 consultancy bill.
  11. Wow this thread has brought back memories. Control line model aircraft, Mercurochrome, glass coke bottles with a deposit. kick start motorbikes, drive in movie theatre, belly mount reserve and sneaking out at night
  12. Thanks everyone for the detailed replies and pm's. I like to understand gear before using it. Since S.O.S is completely foreign to me I needed some background. I know that one of the "old" causes of fatalities, was borrowed gear having different procedures. This drove some of my questioning. I'll post a reply once everything is finalised. 15. Basically my wife did AFF in the US. She'll need to get to A license using the SOS system. This means about 10 to 15 jumps. Then she'll likely start jumping my gear which is normal 2 handed system. When I get out to the DZ I will have a proper chat with the instructors there, but not being familiar with the SOS systems I wanted some opinions. 16. SOS stands for "single operating system." Single as in "single handle." True SOS systems don't have a separate cut-away handle. Maybe Nigel will speak-up here and clarify the exact system to which he refers. Sorry at this point I don't have more information. I will know more in a month or so. 17. What are peoples thoughts on a jumper with 8/9 jumps going from the standard cutaway and reserve handle system to an SOS system? I haven't seen an SOS system before, but the dz that will be nearest us only uses the SOS for student gear. As a non-instructor I am not happy with conversions, although I have used rip-cord mains, ROL system and BOC so I have been able to convert. 18. My mind played tricks on me... First time I read that as "Amstalder is pretty tiny, and she's got lovely tits" I've never seen them... dude, shes my SISTER! I know she's your sister. Just telling how I read it first time through... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  20. And that is how failed projects and business's are born. Not to mention the skydiving incidents where people STFU and learn after the fact... broken legs because students didn't ask how to land properly included Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. Telling a female jumper to go and roll in the hay with an instructor for half an hour, sounds more like relationship advice than plf advice Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. The word you're looking for is Copyright. http://www.copyright.gov/ It's pretty f'in' simple. But only engineers know the difference between patents, copyright and trademark Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. I was wearing goggles! Now I remember that my booties came off as I exited in a sit, sliding down the ramp on my feet - my old jumpsuit was vulnerable to that. Holy shit its DB Cooper.. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. Except this is a very OLD joke. A version I heard in the UK: Her: Kiss me where it smells Him: You mean Grimsby? The version I heard easily 40 years ago: She asked me to kiss her where it stinks, so I drove her to Carson. By coincidence this was posted on FB yesterday Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  25. I'm kinda siding with you on this one but it's not uncommon for little 120lb jumpers at do their 10th+ jump on a 150 sized canopy where I jump. Usually they will start on a 190. To the OP there is no way people on the interweb can judge what's appropriate for you. Ask the opinion of more than one instructor and if you're still not comfortable with their advice maybe go a size bigger. -Michael Going from a 290 down to a 170 is a huge jump! If it is possible I would definitely try and get some jumps on 210's and 190's on the way down. It sounds like the OP is from a smaller country/dz so maybe equipment availability is scarce making it difficult to do a conservative progression.
