  1. Thanks you have inspired a project. I had never thought of going into that much detail. The web link is very informative. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. Thanks for your detailed reply and interesting info. I realise that the computer imposes the limits rather than the design of the aircraft aerodynamics. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. With your stated views of women, I would say that your odds are much much worse! I agree. With his stated views I figure his odds are about 0 regardless of any legal profession that most women hold. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. As I jump a 1 pin version of a poptop from a British company - does them making a mess of things extend to the 1 pin version? I love the fact my reserve pin is against my back. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. The article states that under 'normal' flying conditions it is impossible to stall a modern plane. What this mean't is that the pilots had ZERO experience of dealing with a stall. I guess it is similar to the situation we have in skydiving. We end up depending on electronic gizmo's and lose sight of the physical boundaries. Very sad to see that such a simple mistake killed so many people. On the positive side at least it is unlikely to happen again.
  6. I would definitely not do that. The US can and does prevent people from entry, they just put you on the next flight home. You probably need to try and get a tourist visa. As time is so short I suggest you try and get together all the necessary documentation for a normal visa application. But DO NOT try and file it without speaking to someone from the US Embassy. Just in case a mistake on your part causes delays.
  7. What I found is that would get a nice 'stack' on the canopy. But as soon as I tried to bag it - it would just explode into a basketball sized ball of fabric. Eventually I got angry enough to be aggressive. Once I had the stack I used everything I had to force control and it went in 'ok'. I think I'll leave the next 4 weeks practise to my wife.
  8. I made the Farm my home dz for the past year. Andy who is popsjumper here will give you plenty of support - he is an AFF instructor and he doesn't follow beer rules but prefers coca-cola. Hans is the DZO and if you have a schedule you want to get your license on then it is important to communicate with him. This is especially true if you are planning to jump during the week as while the plane goes up - it is not all day long. Finally if you jump at the Farm expect to make many friends. You won't be isolated and jumping on your own unless you choose to.
  9. Yip after asking you and thinking about it hard I got myself convinced that I just wasn't trying hard enough. It is going to take quite a few more practices till I have a packjob I am happy to take terminal though. But I would jump this one - provided it is a hop and pop at 2500ft over a wide open area. I wouldn't want the freebag and main to drift to far and get lost Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. Silly ole me. I thought it was 377 who came up with the walkie-talkie idea. And Snow who came up with the Dan Cooper comic. And SA Carr who linked it to Cooper, hypothetically. I didnt think you had been born yet! I am deeply offended. I first floated the idea of walkie talkies on the thread ** Just kidding about being offended. 377 took the idea and ran with it. Besides he is a Cooper nut and honestly I would rather not be put in that category Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. Sadly, me too! I'm also glad to see it wasn't something about cookies. Or brownies. Congrats, Nigel! Did you jump that pack job? No not yet. I won't be jumping for 4-6 weeks. BTW cookies made with 5 leaved vegetables rock Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. I have been struggling to get my new canopy into it's main bag. I got myself convinced that the d-bag was too small. Anyway it turn out I was just being a little girl and not being firm enough with the canopy. After numerous attempts it fits in the bag with room to spare. Anyway after fighting nylon for half a day I think I deserve a nice hot bubble bath for my aching arms
  13. This whole time I thought Mark was referring to the "Pussy Whipped" thread. ??? It seems he was. I was hoping that there was a bit more whipping involved than that thread Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. I can't figure out which thread it is/was either Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. Listen to what everyone else has said about needing 200+ jumps for a camera. But if you don't like sharing helmets as some of them can get pretty nasty, then there are options. You could go very cheap like a Protec, knowing that you will get rid of it. Alternatively you could get a quality open face helmet right away. I wouldn't get a full face helmet until you had the right level of experience. If you get a helmet for the long term, speak to someone trustworthy about what to look for in a helmet in terms of making it camera safe. I found that adding the necessary features to make my helmet camera safe doubled the cost. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. This sounds interesting. Do you have more information what the raw data required is and how it is presented?
  17. Thanks very much Bryan. Lots of useful information. I hadn't realised the density altitude would make a significant effect. I am aware of at least 2 people who have noted ground speeds of over 90MPH at full altitude! But I had contributed this entirely to strong uppers.
  18. I disagree. The winds aloft are necessary for a correct spot. But to work out canopy speed all that is needed is a controlled slow turn. The slowest speed will be read going into the wind, and the highest when flying downwind. It is then simple maths to subtract the wind. By the way this is one of the reasons that I believe this type of learning/playing should be done on a solo exit. Unless of course I have missed something? 19. Oh so you're one of those people. Got credentialed and became a Power Point warrior, producing nothing of value, spending your days playing BS bingo with your bosses whilst leeching off of work of productive people all the while convincing yourself that you're an important part of the process to get things done. First of all Secondly what a fascinating article. Unfortunately the internet has made plagiarism all to easy. Teachers don't stop it either, nor teach why it is bad. We've had to teach our kids that cut and paste from Wikipedia is not acceptable homework. Man they get pissed off when I randomly copy a sentence from their homework and google it Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  20. Don't be so unkind and untrusting. If his mom married her brother then he can call him dad or uncle depending on his mood Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. Primarily I am interested in getting a feel for the actual forward speed of my canopy, including different configurations like deep brakes. I know that wind speed will need to be accounted for. Besides that getting a better feel for the glide ratio would be interesting. I don't have the 401 which has a barometric altimeter though, and I have no idea how well GPS altimeters work. But it should be good enough for the level of interest I have. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. Spotting is for wimps Besides how else am I going to look cool to whuffo chicks? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. Looks compact, and easy to read. Regardless, make sure you limit this to solo jumps with no other canopies in the sky. Ground speed info, for canopies, is generally just for shits and giggles. You can't really control your speed that much, you're not trying to time an arrival at a waypioint, and you're not trying to manage fuel consumption, all the things an aircraft pilot would use the info for. The catch is to remember that an aircraft pilot in flight is generally not in the direct vicinity of other aircraft (unlike a canopy) and when it is, it's in radio contact with the tower or the other aircraft themsleves. Times when they're using the GPS for IFR flight, they're definitaly in contact with ATC, as are all other aircraft in the sky. Keeping your eye up and scanning for traffic is (literally) one million times more important than knowing your ground speed under canopy. The problem with your GPS being so compact and easy to read is that it's tempting to wear and read it more often. Keep in your jmpsuit or on the ground on anything but solo jumps with no other jumpers exiting on that pass. Thanks Dave. I agree on the solo jumping and scanning for traffic being a much higher priority.
  24. My original question was serious. There have been suggestions about gear bags etc that are good and I have a bag that holds my unpacked gear. But there will be occasional times when it is better for the rig to be self contained. First thing that comes to mind is an off landing, requiring a hitch hike from a stranger. I could just assume that it will never happen or that as soon as I arrive I will dump it out. But if I ever do have to do it I will pack the pilot chute into the main tray. Simple and safe. 25. I am only intending using it every now and again not a regular thing. Next toy on the agenda is an orange flashing beacon and fog horn for when I am jumping in cloud Edited to add picture showing size and speed display.
