  1. Trying to get a thumb or finger(s) through a small ring while fighting a wild spinning mal would probably be a bit pf a chore. What "best" is there with pillow handles anyway? Anti-snag? The amount of unintentional reserve pulls on ring handles across the world in the last 20 years can probably be counted on one hand. I've been jumping for 26 years and don't personally know of a single one. On the other hand I got my cutaway handle stripped clean in freefall one day. It's a pillow handle, of course. Didn't an AFF instructor get killed on exit because of a floating reserve handle? That said I prefer the traditional handle. 2. My fairly recent experience with coaches has been varied. 2 coaches spent alot of time doing prep work with me before the jump. We also spent considerable time debriefing afterwards. Interestingly neither of these guys charged for their slot or time. My worst experience was a paid coach jump. No time was spent debriefing prior to the jump or afterwards. Frankly I felt let down as it was supposed to be a dive and dock and she left the plane AFTER me and couldn't get down to me. I only found out afterwards that she was supposed to go first. One aspect to bear in mind, for someone who has about 100 jumps it can be fun to jump with people recently off of student status. You are both learning, as you have to fly your butt off to (try) and compensate for their lack of experience. Throw in the spotting and exit separation, checking over their gear and I really wonder if the new A person or the 100 jump wonder is getting more out of the experience. 3. You may think it’s harsh, I think it’s truthful. There are more people making money off of students than there are students staying in the sport. Sparky I think a variation on the US system would be best. An A licensed jumper should be able to jump with any B+ jumper. I've seen some sketchy jumps when 2,3 or 4 newly minted A jumpers try and do RW. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. A quick excel spreadsheet based on the Wikipedia formula gives >200Watts for the 4sq inches at 120MPh. That doesn't even take into account any fulcrum effect. Interesting thought that at terminal velocity your dick can give you more than a 0.25hp (provided you have an erection) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. Why can't your travel with kids? My kids have been to 5 other countries with me or my ex. Seeing the world through a child's eye can actually enhance the experience. Imagine the spawn of Shah on a flight Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. My suggestion is to get a cheap used RW jumpsuit. Generally it is worth getting good on your belly before getting into freeflying. I would get advice from someone qualified about booties though. Booties can help with RW, but I don't know what level of experience is recommended before jumping with them. When buying used, try the jumpsuit on. I looked at quite a few that were for people my height and weight, but they didn't fit. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. Correct a USPA A license includes 2 dive and docks and some basic FS. It seems that under the USPA system once you have your A you are free to do most skydiving activities. UK and Oz appear to treat B license as the first stage after "student". Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  8. I am totally gutted to not have a bike anymore The muppet is planning on commuting, and bike shop tried to sell him a Diversion (new replacement for the Fazer) instead. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Just got back from the bike shop. Some kid has just put a deposit down on my old R6 (2010 plate) BEFORE he has done his DAS course. I have no control on who they sell to but I feel crap that instead of someone getting a load of pleasure, it is probably going to end up in broken bones or death Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. I haven't jumped in the UK, but I did take my B-license to a dz with the intent of jumping. Yes you can take your B license and at this DZ you would have been accepted. That said having grown used to a very friendly US dz (The Farm) I found the general attitude sucked, people were not welcoming or friendly so I left. To the OP - if you haven't had a chance to do RW at 80 jumps you need to go and visit a friendly dz in Spain or the US. I know a couple of people with 1000+ jumps who really enjoy doing 2, 3 or 4 ways with people who have just got their A license. 12. So, TSA got caught with their pants down...again. Since signs are good enough there, signs should be good enough at the boarding gate, eh? Think of all the radiation therapy cost savings!! You can't blame them southerners. The guy manning the gate probably saw a sheep and got distracted. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. And to be arrested, and to make the evening news? This, laying face down on the tarmac with a M4 aimed at you is not a fun way to start the day, trust me on that one. They'd probably be extra rough with him in their embarrassment at the security breach! Seriously Nigel, you should call the airport to report it. It's funny, but at the same time it's... well, kind of not. Well the TSA supervisor was really nice. Said thanks very much and gave me a coupon for a free enhanced patdown I'd have been pissed with you though if it caused a security alert and delayed my flight! The thought crossed my mind about 10 seconds after I spoke to the guy. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. They're not rules just guidelines. Nothing stopping you putting on your wingsuit, gopro and new velocity, the jump after your get your A license. If you've got enough mad-skills you'll do it all on the same jump. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. Can you (or anybody) provide a link to this? The closest thing I can find is in 6-10 B3d http://www.uspa.org/SIM/Read/Section6/tabid/169/Default.aspx#1072 which doesn't say 500 jumps. Of course anything under a 150 is considered high performance though 500 jumps seems awful conservative. However, the above link does state that anything under a 150 is considered advanced. At just under 600 jumps I definitely am NOT considered advanced, however I did just downsize to a canopy smaller than 150 to a wl of 1.1. I do realize that wingloading on smaller canopies does not equate to the same on larger canopies. I just did not think of my transition as being too aggressive. edit: spelling SIM section 5-3 part 6. I have quoted 500 jumps as that is the requirement for a D license. For some reason the wingloading recommendations are under equipment not canopy flight in the SIM. They'd probably be extra rough with him in their embarrassment at the security breach! Seriously Nigel, you should call the airport to report it. It's funny, but at the same time it's... well, kind of not. That's not a bad idea. I am sitting in the airport for the next couple of hours with nothing better todo. I'll go and have a friendly chat with some-one from the TSA. If I don't post for a few days please get an SAS rescue party off to gitmo for me
  17. And to be arrested, and to make the evening news? I don't trust the yanks. They'd probably shoot first and ask questions later. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. Shit I shouldn't have caught up with this thread when I am tired Shah your attitude just pisses me off - yes I am a fucking engineer. Years ago I worked with some a-holes who were elitest and looked down on mechanical engineers as the lowest scum. I'm an RF/ASIC designer and I have friends who are very interesting mechanical engineers. These are guys who have hobbies ranging from micro-brewing to breeding exotic birds and fish. You need to get off your high horse. You may know the saying "those who can do, those who can't teach". That is what proper engineers think of people who did an engineering degree and stopped practising I used to think you were trolling women and engineers for a laugh, but it has worn so thin. Anyway I am going to get a . Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. yeah i did it sucked...i feel horrible like Nat, I just told her we are done Gorgeous girl, looked like Rhiana and had a great body and a great spirit but....well for the past 10 years of her life she was an Auper...glorified baby sitter. And god as amazing as she was, she even went skydiving to impress me, I could not see her and i in a long term serious relationship. I know a university education isn't the end all and be all of everything but she at the moment was with out a job. She said she was working for her dads company but.....I could never really prove it. I'm 34, I don't make enough money for a trophy wife or a twiky, I make enough money for me and if i'm getting serious with someone she should make 50% of what Im making.....I'm too old for projects. Still, hurts, of the girls I'm seeing, she was the one I trusted the most and thought the most of. And the cats loved her. Such is life right? Good luck Nat A good looking hooker makes alot of money. Maybe you should look into marrying or dating a hooker? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  20. Interesting discovery today. I took a wrong turn when going to the rental car return and ended up behind a large international airport. There was a set of gates leading onto the runway that had obviously been forgotten wide open with nobody in sight. Signs all over the place saying it was a restricted area etc. I was still really tempted to take a wrong turn and play the dumb foreigner. It would be pretty cool to drive up to a 747 Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. There could be more to this story what if the guy is 120lbs... and all they had to rent was 230s? I don't think i would ever jump a 99 or let alone anything less than a 170 for a long time, but i am saying that some people do learn faster than others and yes 50-60 jumps isn't much but we still don't have all the details. ALL i wanted to know was if he landed it fine or busted his ass. A few more details would be nice too like how the remaining of his day went and stuff but damn you dont have to bite my head off.... I suggest that you read the SIM especially the sections on equipment and canopy flight. You'll see that anything below 150sq foot is not advised for anyone with less than 500 jumps. Remember that the people who wrote the guidelines in the SIM are skydivers, not whuffo's. They are there to protect US. People get away with it. I jumped with a guy who had ~70 jumps and he had a Stilleto 135. I always thought it was youngsters that did that kind of thing, but he was late forties. 22. For me the symptoms went like this. First jump, stood the landing up but thought wow I was lucky to not hurt myself. Second jump I was nervous about landing, didn't stand up the landing and again thought that it was more luck than skill. So I went back up to what I was comfortable with. I think it is similar to driving, when you start out everything takes mental effort. Remembering your turn signals, changing gears, getting the clutch timing right. Eventually you get to the point where it is subconscious and you can turn a corner, change gear at the same time and not even realise you have done it. I am still at the point under canopy where I am having to "think" about basic actions. Actions such as flying the pattern and figuring exactly where I am going to land are still competing for conscious thought. I want to get to the point where scanning for traffic is the only conscious thought on landing and pattern flying and flare height become mundane actions like changing gear. 23. I hope you're not implying that I am trying to do that? For what it is worth STF (where popsjumper is) has been my "home" dz as I was travelling through Atlanta regularly. This is probably my last trip to the US for some time and I want to get as much USPA license stuff signed off as possible and I'm not able to squeeze in a trip to Georgia. Popsjumper has been my skydiving mentor since getting back into the sport. I have spoken to SC and there will be people around tomorrow and Friday so I am taken care of thanks. 24. No I disagree. Deitys need to have evidence to even suggest that they might exist before I will even consider basing my life around them. The religious use very poor reasoning and often down right lies to support their beliefs. Just go to the Answers in Genesis to see the many lies and misdirection that is put out there by the religious. There is no non-physical anything. Spiritualism or super natural are just things that people made up. It's just silly to believe these things with out any evidence to even suggest they are real. Show me some evidence to suggest their real. Use proper critical thinking. Otherwise I will laugh off your beliefs. There are currently areas of life that we don't have concrete answers for. Some of us choose to believe that science will fill in the gaps in due course, others prefer to attribute certain things to a God (or Gods). I think you are stretching things to say there is nothing "non-physical". I believe there are things that are currently attributed to the supernatural by many people that one day we will have a complete understanding of. Kallends example of the placebo effect is an excellent example - it shows the power of belief. I don't believe we have scientific answers for that (yet). 25. Some people get very upset with the inaccuracies, I wouldn't worry about it. I see it all the time in other area's of my life. My favourite was a BBC news article that a "double decker" plan had crashed - it was a bi-plane! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
