  1. >They have the right to drive SUVs goddammit (and are willing to >bomb a whole lot of people to defend that right). Despite the smileys, I can smell the ozone in the air. The americans should be waking up just about now...
  2. >So his feet isnt entangled in the ropes. Aghh! The horror! Skydiving terminology 101: The one and only rope found in skydiving is the one used with S/L students. Parachutes have lines. You don't wanna sound like whuffo now do you?
  3. You'll get much more glide out of a birman suit...
  4. >I am hoping to have it on display at any of the well reputed medical schools. I'm sure it would feel more at home at any badly reputed medical schools.
  5. Oh yeah, loads of holes in the sides is a dead giveaway if one bothers to look with one's eyes... my bad. Aren't there, like, laws against that kind of thing? Dumping petrochemical waste would get you in a lot of trouble here... I mean, doesn't that stuff end up in the phreatic water? WTF, to ask the question?
  6. >Soakaway...pour the nasty stuff into the ground and hope it disappears...... That's what figured... I was hoping it wouldn't be that. But concerning the "Ultimate Garage", wasn't there a tank for that sort of stuff?(I didn't really read the pages that carefully, but there was a tank...)
  7. >I use my liver as an alcohol soakaway...is that bad?? No, your using a proper filtering technology(your liver) before the waste is passed on to the environment. The only problem is what we are going to do with your liver when you're done using it... Probably dump it at a toxic waste disposal plant. Erno
  8. >We in the UK are about to commence the decommissioning on our >oldest nuclear installation at Dounreay, estimates currently run at >between 50 and 60 years to safely dismantle these experimental >reactors. Just a guess here, but maybe the newer reactors have been designed with dismantling in mind, and they wouldn't take so long to take apart? I don't really know anything about that, it would just seem sensible. Then again, when you build something that's supposed to withstand a hit by a flying plane, it's probably pretty difficult to make it easy to dismantle... >Its not just the fuel, its all the bits and pieces as well. Yeah, all that low and mid-level active waste like protective suits used in the plants. >Currently the plan is to sink a shaft into the local granite, and just >bury it....which is cool as long as there is no seismic activity for the >foreseeable future, Am I on crack again or wasn't there just an earthquake somewhere on Britain? >or that the storage facility isn't flooded by some >sort of wild weather change... ...like the ongoing enhancement of the greenhouse effect? >By the way, this plan is so safe, the location for it is about as far >away from 'civilisation' as you can get on mainland Britain. Does the > acronym NIMBY mean anything here? (not in my back yard) That's just a 'bad vibes' thing. There really is very little threat from RA-waste that is properly stored in whatever you are going to store it in. Here in Finland we just decided on the place where our RA-waste will be stored in the future. The NIMBYs were pretty loud here too... In the end they decided to bury the stuff near one of our reactors. There were a lot of people who actually wanted the storage cave and the waste-processing plant in their community, with the argument that they will create new jobs in the area. >Personally, I favour geothermal generators, there must be an >opportunity to develop the drilling technology we have for the >petrochemical industry (as used on HP/HT wells) here.... Geothermal heat is actually gaining popularity with home-builders here. In the end it's cheaper than oil or electric heating. The initial cost most be higher I suppose, otherwise anyone would use one, right? Erno
  9. >So, does the waste oil just 'soakaway' into the ground? Huh? (unfamiliar terminology, language barrier rears it's ugly head)
  10. nacmacfeegle said: >By the way, the UK is in the same sticky future, recent studies indicate >that we need more nuclear power stations, as, believe it or not, they are >actually better for the environment than our hydrocarbon based >generators...wtf???? Depends, of course, on your definition on "good for environment". The hydrocarbon generators produce a lot exhausts, greenhouse gases, harmful particles(the really fine dust stuff), and all that crap. On the other hand, nuclear reactors exhausts are water vapor. And nuclear waste, which, properly stored, is no threat to anyone. Unless terrorists get their hands on some. Finland recently decided, controversially, to build a 5th nuclear power plant. I'm really not sure what to think of it.
  11. Oh goody, a nuclear debate! I'll start a new thread.
  12. >I tend to find anything personifying ideas like that interesting. The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman? Of course they aren't books exactly... What was it again you were supposed to call comics that don't want to be called comics? Erno
  13. >I read a lot over this summer, though, especially any of his stuff >involving Death. I think "Mort" is my favorite so far. All his stuff involves Death...
  14. An attachment perhaps? Your post wasn't that funny...
  15. >Look into 'em for what they may have been modelled on. Wyrd >Systers, for example is McBeth. Hmm. I guess I'll have to read McBeth then... In "Jingo" there were hilarious references to hte JFK assasination: "Where was the second bowman??" In the book-storage of course...If Leonard of Quirm isn't Leonardo DaVinci I'll eat my modem. "But surely no-one would use it to harm other people!" "Maskerade" was a pretty straigthforward reworking of "The phantom of the opera"... No real surprises in the plot. Enrico Basilica was funny though, reminded me of Enrico Pallazzo(another case of CatchThatReference! here...) >If you enjoy Pratchett you'll probably like Robert Rankin too. Looks like there are a few books by him at my local library. I'll look into them. Erno
  16. >And back home in Sweden we mourn a loss of a BASE jumper A bad weekend indeed. Any details will probably be first posted on The BASE board. Blue skies, black death. He was the 13th BASE jumper to die in the sport this year. Erno
  17. An excellent author, funny as hell! I had read a few of his books before, pretty much all the ones found in my local library in Finnish, when it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to check the shelves with the english books on them... During the weekend I finished "Maskerade" and "Jingo", and now I'm in the middle of "Carpe Jugulum".
  18. >Its still too early to point fingers or lay blame on organisations etc for >either of these incidents, so I'm not goind to start that off. My thoughts on the Vantaa-incident are on the other thread. I'm pretty sure no organization will be behind that one. The only question in my mind is whether he indended to kill himself(somewhere else, and the bomb went off accidentally), the innocent bystanders(the boomb went off when he was placing it), or both(the way it happened).
  19. How was the weekend? As you might have noticed from my other post, titled "bomb strikes", things haven't been that nice around here.
  20. I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm assuming you know the name of the song, but don't remember it? Try this page. Plenty of tunes there, and you can even buy them on cd's! I'm sure you've tried Google already?
  21. Any chance the ad will make an appearance on skydivingmovies.com?
  22. I've just spent some time reading posts on various web-based discussion-forums. Ones connected with for example some of the finnish newspapers, or tv-channels. There seems to be a common progression in the discussions: The first posts are something like "OMG, an accident, people are dead". The explosion was originally thought to be an accident involving gas-tanks. Then it was told that this was indeed a bomb-attack. After that, many posters automatically assumed "Muslim-fundamentalists!". Just like that. The next bit of information was that an unidentified body among the victims was suspected to be the bomber. A white male, in his 20s. So, the next thing the posters assumed was that "He must've been a member of some right/left-wing radical movement!". And as the first news quoted him to be a "University student", the assumptions tended to be towards a left-wing/anarchist/militant environmentalist. All this, with no information, no facts, only assumptions. When people found out that he was wearing a Nike-sweatshirt, and that he wasn't an Uni-student, but a chemistry student at a Polytechnic, it was blindingly obvious that he was a right-wing extremist! Again, the authorities have given no information to confirm or to deny anything. Enter the Internet. The authorities have given, as usual, very little information about the bomber to the public. However, self-appointed "investigators" have taken the bits of information that have been given, spliced those together with different directory services on the 'Net, and, unsurprisingly, have come up with a name for the bomber. Looks like he has frequented many sites on the 'Net that have forums about explosives and bombs. One of those sites is(was) on a finnish server. Almost all pages that have any information on the identity of the bomber have mysteriously disappeared without explanation. Almost. This is one of the most powerful examples of the saying "information wants to be free" that I have seen . Once something is on the 'Net, it's useless trying to stop it. So now rumors are spreading. Some say that the bomber indeed was 'anti-capitalist', some say he broke up with a girl and wanted revenge on the new boyfriend. Having seen an interview of a classmate of his, I don't believe in either. It seems that the guy was of the silent type, seldom heard to speak, and mostly was left to his own devices. The only time seemed happy, said the classmate, was the chemistry experiment classes. A family of Syrian refugees was caught in the blast. Their 7-year old daughter was killed, a 9-year old son was critically injured. They came to Finland because they were told it was safe here. No point in this post really, just some random ramblings about something that has had more impact on me than I originally wanted to admit. I now understand americans' feelings after 9-11 a little bit better. Erno
  23. >I've heard one report that it was an LPG tank that went up, but >I can't confirm that. (LPG? Liquid Propane Gas?) In Finland? No, it was originally thought(hoped...) to be an accident involving gas-tanks, but there were no systems in the whole building that used any sort of flammable gas. Anyway, it's been confirmed as a bombing, 2-3 kilos of explosive spiced up with lots of different shrapnel. The whole idea seems to have been to kill and maim as many people as possible. The bombers name hasn't been released, but he was a chemistry(!)-student, born in Finland in 1983. IMO it was just a suicide with an attitude. Erno
