  1. I remember hearing a quote that the handles on a(6-handle) tandem rig can be pulled in 720 different orders, and that only just over 100 of those combinations are survivable. I started thinking about this and it didn't really make sense to me, so I looked in to it. I generated a list of the possible (120)combinations on a 5-handle(Strong) rig, and(not going through them all 1 by 1, just guestimating), it seems to me that about 1/3 of the combinations will result in a clean deployment, 1/3 may cause an entanglement, and 1/3 will likely cause an entanglement. This assuming that all handles are pulled no matter what. Including the combinations where not all handles are pulled makes things even more complicated of course. So the point of my post is; Does adding a sixth handle to the system dramatically decrease your chances of survival if you pull the wrong handles, or is the "100 survivable combinations" quote wrong?
  2. Well, the last registered users don't seem to include anything that suspicious. Concerning the subject at hand, here's another version of my useless statistic "DZcommers by region". Looks like no matter how many new people sign up, the relative amounts of people from different regions don't really change.
  3. That's pretty harsh. The FXCs used at my home DZ work just fine; It's a good piece of equipment as long as it's used and maintained properly. I don't recall any problems with them(except the ones we had after they were serviced and a washer was replaced incorrectly). I wonder if the models used in the States are the same ones used in Europe? Or if the bad name the FXC has in the States is due to the older/un-updated models misfiring? The latest revision works quite well as far as I know.
  4. Write down the serial numbers of all your skydiving gear, along with descriptions of the gear, and keep the list somewhere else than your gearbag. It's not much trouble, and if your gear ever gets stolen, you'll be glad you did it. I also emailed the list to myself and archived the message in my email-account. I just updated my list and thought someone might do the same if they were reminded...
  5. In the latest Paragear catalog, the manufacturers of this canopy state that Does anyone know what this actually means? That you can get two different line sets for the canopy for different flight characteristics? Something else?
  6. This is my all-time favorite search:
  7. Well, it was a one year anniversary for this thread, I guess it was necessary to dig it up...
  8. -a tape measure -my cell phone -my wallet with $10.90AUD in it. Plus a number of plastic cards most of which would be useful several thousands of kms from where I am now.
  9. Sheesh, Nac.... is that Engineerish for: ?
  10. Is anyone using this camera? Any experiences? It's the low-end model in Panasonic's digital video camera range, I guess it might compare to the Sony TRV-19? It seems like a good alternative, it's slightly cheaper and somewhat lighter(520g 440g) than the TRV-19.
  11. Is anyone using one of the Sony digital 8 cameras? Is there any sense in buying one for tandem video work? I know they are a lot bigger than the miniDV cameras, but they're also so much cheaper... Do they have enough features for basic in-camera editing(basicly just fade-in/fade-out and x-fade)?
  12. According to the specs the TRV-19 has and the TRV-22 has Doesn't seem like such a big difference to me, can you elaborate on what the digital picture effects do that are missing from the TRV-19? I'd understand from the specs that the TRV-19 would have at least the basic fade ins & fade outs and crossfades? Or, if people who have used a TRV-19 would like to explain what the four fader functions on a TRV-19 do? And if they're enough to make a decent tandem-video or not?
  13. Strong rigs and the new Skyhook equipped Sigmas have only 5 handles = 120 combinations. edit to add: I know Strongs have 5 handles, not counting the RSL release. I'm not really sure about the Sigma, I just assume 6 handles minus the crystal ball =5.
  14. Speaking of software updates: Does anyone know if this(max 119 sec) is a hardware restriction on the ProTrack(not enough memory or something), or if it's going to be changed in a future version of the ProTrack software?
  15. Is anyone here jumping an Atom Legend with a wingsuit? If yes, have you done the open-corners mod to your container? I'm planning on getting it done on my Atom, but I'd rather first get some opinions from someone who's actually done it. When doing this mod, should the corner seams be opened all the way down? Half-way? Something else?
  16. Hi Has anyone jumped both the PD Spectre and the Icarus Omni? How do they compare?
  17. The way I see it, if you can close the container without tools, it's not too tight. This assuming that you have a properly made and maintained pilot-chute.
  18. Nothing makes me close a browser window faster than embedded audio on a website.
  19. Not in mine. I was getting into a habit of wearing a "lucky scarf" around my neck even when it wasn't that cold. Then on one jump when I was walking to the plane I noticed I had forgotten it. I considered going back and getting it, felt stupid, and went ahead with the jump without it.
  20. >You're not allowed to jump without a working AAD here in OZ That's not really the point here. Riding the plane down because the regs tell you to is different from riding it down because you're too scared of jumping without an AAD. Anyway it's a fucked up rule. People off student status should be able to make their own decision whether or not to use an AAD. What's the requirement for a D-licence? Some amount of accuracy landings. Fine. So because I can land my canopy on a handkerchief most of the time, I can deal with unconciousness and loss of altitude awareness better? WTF?
  21. I wouldn't recommend the sticky tape. It seems that right on this forum there are two kinds of people: 1. People who have patched their canopies with the sticky tape and have had no problems with it even after thousands of jumps 2. People who have patched their canopies with the sticky tape and whose canopy fabric has deteriorated to a point where you can rip the fabric apart with your fingers. Someone here really needs to do an experiment with the tape....
  22. Doh! Thanks guys, it's been too long since I've used a Unix system...
