  1. Actually, "Throw and Go" is a term I've heard in common use from many people. It's also a fairly good description of an ultra low freefall deployment, as the PC ought to be inflated and pulling _before_ it reaches the level of the exit. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. The appropriate question is not "have there been more attacks since the invasion?", but rather "would there have been more or less attacks absent the invasion?" You can't compare to pre-invasion. You have to posit the existence of a current time without the invasion, and compare to that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Definitely don't rubber bad the bridle. The best technique for fastest freefall inflation appears to be pitching the entire PC bundle straight up over your head at exit. I'd guess that using a super mushroom would yield the least potential for hesitation in this situation. The name of the game here is consistency, not speed. Random hesitation is what will get you. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    38" pc

Use a floating handle. It works great. I'm not sure if anyone is making them standard, but I bet Marty at Asylum will make you one custom if you ask. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. I recently received this from an experienced jumper, regarding this exit. I recommend that anyone who is considering a trip there but is unfamiliar with the exits read this. Many people fail to take this jump (and the others in the same area) seriously enough, in my opinion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    safty gear

I'd use some kind of energy absorbing lanyard (not a static system). Some good ones made by Petzl are here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. Phil Smith stopped BASE jumping over a decade ago. However, I think he will _always_ be a BASE jumper. If you don't know who he is, he's BASE 1. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I saw an experienced paraglider getting ridge lift to climb above the exit point on a cliff jump in Norway last summer. I don't think it's that farfetched to imagine jumping somewhere that the terrain allowed sufficient ridge lift to stay aloft a _long_ time. You'd just need an oversized, highly efficient skydiving canopy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. Locked threads still elicit responses, sometimes in the form of new threads. Also, locked threads can still be read by anyone who cares to read them. To avoid these things, threads get removed to the Recycle Bin. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. If you plan on a water landing, I think you'll be ok. I'd recommend waiting, but you have to decide on the whole enthusiasm v. safety thing. Your greatest chance of trouble is probably going to be trying to land in the BD landing area. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. The "textbook" answer is 200. My real answer is: as many as possible. Just be sure that your canopy control (read: CRW skills), accuracy and tracking are well dialed in. My (rather wordy) advice on this topic is linked above, where it says "Getting into BASE." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. I wear Crispi's (roughly similar boot sold by BR). There has to be a dealer in Europe, as they are made in Italy. Not sure where the Hanwag's are made, but I'd guess they're from Europe, too. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. If you look at the "mini-profile" to the left of a post, you can see how many jumps the poster has made. In the case of AggieDave, it looks like 1100+. I also believe he's a tandem master (in other words, he's qualified to have people strapped to the front of him when he gets out of the airplane). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. This is far too un-argumentative to be in speaker's corner. I'm moving it to the Bonfire. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  16. For now. You're best off to customize a "deep slider" setting for yourself, as well as the "deepest" slider off setting. It's a myth that it's ok to have excess forward speed on a slider up jump. You're not _always_ going to be far away from the object when jumping slider up. You could be a fat ass like me, or you could be a rad tracker who is just barely out-tracking underhung cliffs. In either case (or many others) you still need minimum forward speed after a slider up opening. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. How much do you weigh? The WS extreme can be reconfigured to "standard" configuration, so that's not really an issue. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. Can everyone who's had this happen list the style of gear it happened on? I've had: Brake setting hung on LRT's (thick loop)--twice Excess line hung up on elastic behind the riser--twice I've never had the excess line hang up in a velcro pocket style riser, but the majority of my jumps are on elastic keeper band, so I'm not sure that means anything. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. I think that was in reference to the legal events in germany where reserves have been required (since they events were endorsed by the german parachuting authority). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. Your deepest brake setting should only be used slider down. That's why most canopies have at least two brake settings. Using a well set deep brake setting slider up will result in deployment stall and/or slider hangup. I put myself in the hospital once by using an overly deep brake setting on a slider up jump. At a minimum, customize yourself a deep brake setting for slider down use and a shallow setting for slider up. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Remember that adding or removing settings will slightly alter the length of the lines (they get shorter when you add a setting), so be sure to test after removing settings, as well. There's really no need to remove them, though. You may as well leave them in, in case you gain weight, or jump at a different altitude, in different winds, or whatever. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Surely you are joking. Ashcroft could never put together a statement that long that didn't invoke christianity in some way. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. Imagine what the opening would be like--with only part of the canopy staying in the air column. Perhaps you'd want a round? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. I wonder how tought it would be to maintain stability as you left the column of air? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. Dude. That's rad. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
