For the record, I believe that I have glimpsed the miles Doug's shoes have walked better than most in the BASE community. Believe me, if you had taken even a few of those steps, you'd be drooling on yourself in a rubber room. I know I would. Doug, we all know how you feel about this. I think Sangiro has made it pretty clear that his web site is not the place to discuss it. Let's get together and do some jumps, have some fun, and talk about it. There's no need to waste your energy repeating things here, and pissing people off. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Oh boy. I've been off line since for several days. Last time I logged on, this thread had only the one post. I've got some thoughts here. So I'll indulge myself and post repeated times to the end of the thread. Since the owner of this particular sandbox has already cleaned up a bit, I don't feel any particular need to break out the rake and shovel he loans me on occasion. I don't see this as an attack on Dwain at all. I don't think Dwain would have either. I think Nick's stages work pretty well as a generalization. Which is to say, they are not totally precise, but they do give a good idea as to the stages that many of us go through. He may have missed some stages I've seen (like the "near suicidal, I don't care if I go in" phase), and if I ever get back to the original point of the discussion, maybe I'll think about that some more. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm on the road right now, but I ought to be home some time in the middle of your stay. I'll PM you my numbers. Give me a call if you have any questions. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Don't worry, Space. Manbird is a super geek. Very few people get his sense of humor. Edit to add: But his write up on Jeb and Luigi dock in this thread was pretty much the funniest thing I've ever read on these forums. In fact, it's so funny I'm going to cut and paste it here, even though it's both off topic and a cross-post. See what you can get away with when you're buddies with the moderator (or you _are_ the moderator)? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Not necessarily. Sponsorships, money, corporate influence... All of these things have influences on sports they touch. Those influences can be both positive and negative. I would definitely not say that they are universally positive. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

What Bryan said. With one other thought: BASE jumping and Bridge Day are not quite the same. Bridge Day has it's own culture and experience, which is quite distinct from the culture of BASE jumping. What you are contemplating is definitely within the bounds of Bridge Day, but would be well outside the realm of "normal" BASE. In short, go for it. But don't anyone think that means this is a good way to get into BASE itself. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Please, please, please DO NOT. I can think of several cases where a skydiver (often an American, but it's happened to others) went over to Europe and decided to try BASE from one of those "tall, legal, hence just must be safe" cliffs over there. Cliffs are not the best choice of object for a first jump. Randomly wandering up to one of them and leaping off is not the road to a long and happy life. If you are dead set on trying BASE in Europe, please go to Stavanger, Norway. Find more information about their program here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Jason, Can you give us an update on registration status? I'm just trying to decide when to release this thread from the top of the forum. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If we steal your glasses, I think you'd count. I've done a couple jumps with a blindfold on--does that count? The rule was that you had to leave the blindfold on until after you were under canopy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Still, if the sherrif asks you to stop doing something, continuing to do it just seems like a bad idea--regardless of the circumstances leading up to his request. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

First Deaf skydiver to do BASE jump!
TomAiello replied to BillyVance's topic in Skydivers with Disabilities
What's unfortunate about that? As long as everyone is having fun, it's all good. I've posted to the thread in BASE, and sent you a PM with Shaun's contact info. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
I've jumped plenty of railroad trestles. I'm not sure about towers they own, but I'd imagine they legal implications are about the same. I know that there are some extra penalties if they can get you for obstructing the railroads right of way. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Billy, I made several jumps with a deaf BASE jumper last weekend. His name is Shaun McLaughlin, and he lives in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho (very northern Idaho, near the Canadian border). He's been jumping for around 4 years, and has about 150 jumps. He's a regular at the legal span in Idaho, as well has having been down to Moab for the Turkey boogie and some other fun. I'll PM you his email. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Huh? Anyone polled any of the businessmen running parachuting businesses (DZO's, Manufacturers, Gear Retailers, etc, etc, etc) to see if they "love war"? Seems like a pretty sweeping generalization to make about a class of people that makes up a significant minority of the American populace. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

By TARDover, you mean the front flip TARD? Sure. Although I'd say that's more a TARD than a McConkey. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

" No jokes about or references to pedophilia. None." Please ammend to add: "Unless it's a female pedophile" Michael Thank you for pointing that out. Please have a look at the explanatory paragraph under that: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Originally, folks started using the slider to keep the canopy grouped together. The idea was to be able to do McConkey's in some wind, without having it blow around all over down there. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

"Terms" skydivers use to call themselves
TomAiello replied to tr3's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Dude. You calling yourself a skydiver now? Will wonders never cease.... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
I've not got much experience with slider up McConkey's. But the times I've been able to compare, there was a noticeable difference in opening altitude between slider up and slider down. I'm not really willing to try to quantify it, though. Suffice to say that slider up openings are slower. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've talked to two people who've gotten it today (they wanted to post in one of the threads in BASE and were unable to do so). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The "Season" is generally Memorial Day to Labor Day. Best chance of getting many jumps in is high summer--right now. The wind is usually higher in the "early" season (until about early june--it's always baffled me that Memorial Day, which is windy, has somehow become the big time to come here). Good jumping conditions generally last until around mid-October. My advice would be to come for a week starting Labor Day weekend. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
